Queeste emerges with the nocturnal sounds of Haron's Wandelaar, an album exploring his long-term interest in music's talent for inducing and affecting dreams, successfully turning listening into an act of transport, leaving you in the midst of falling asleep, at a junction of dislocation, hazily arriving in a liminal world. In Wandelaar we hear Haron's playful reaction against the confines of dance music, gathering energy from his estrangement from the scene and using it as a means to reorder and interrogate sound.

The modest piano takes centre stage, allowing each solo note to becoming fertile and full, suspended and considered, guided by the principles of minimal composers such as John Cage and Ryuichi Sakamoto. Haron delicately translates sparse chords into a cinematic narrative of ascension, conjuring up a 'moony landscape,' grey and desolate from afar, intricately detailed on approach.

Haron’s Wandelaar is available 6 July 2018 on LP and digital platforms. The vinyl release includes an art print by Fallon Does, who is also responsible for the graphic design of Wandelaar. All tracks written and produced by Haron Aumaj, mastered by Wouter for Brandenburg Mastering. Words by Jo Kali.

An album of music inspired by the song of endangered birds with 100% of the profits going towards organisations working to protect them.

"A Guide to the Birdsong of Mexico, Central America & the Caribbean” is the second Volume in the series following on from "A Guide to the Birdsong of South America", originally released on Robin's label Rhythm and Roots. Volume I raised nearly 15,000 USD for two birding organisations and featured artists like Nicola Cruz, Dengue Dengue Dengue and Chancha Via Circuito.

For this second edition we have shifted focus north of the equator and to the vulnerability of bird species like the Momoto Carenado (Nicaragua), Ferminia (Cuba) and the Jamaican Blackbird (Jamaica), birds who have dwindled in numbers as a result of the environmental repercussions of climate change, deforestation and trapping for the pet trade.

For the album we chose 10 endangered or threatened bird species and challenged 10 of our favourite producers or musicians from the region. Working with the Xeno Canto birdsong community and the Macaulay Library, we sourced a recording of each bird’s song. Each artist was then asked to create an original piece of music inspired by the bird and its song.

In line with out vision at Shika Shika the curation of artists is specifically geared towards those bridging connections between traditional music and modernity, or between organic and electronic sounds. There are contributions from artists in eight different countries, ranging from Jamaica’s organic dancehall trio Equiknoxx, to Dj Jigüe, one of the leaders of Cuba’s burgeoning electronic scene. Belize’s critically renowned Garifuna Collective have been bringing the unique Garifuna culture and language to a global audience for many years, while Tamara Montenegro has quickly become one of Nicaragua’s leading female electronic producers.

The project would not have been possible without the support of an incredible Kickstarter community, helping us raise £12,599 in August 2019.

Once the costs of production have been covered, all of the proceeds from this album will be donated to Birds Caribbean, La Asociación Ornitológica de Costa Rica and Fundacion TXORI in Mexico. All profits from the sales of the record, music streaming, poster and t-shirt will be shared between these organisations who focus on engaging local communities to help improve and grow the bird tourism sector, create awareness of vulnerable birds with young people and crucially, provide rescue, rehabilitation and breeding programmes.

Seventh release was Parisian Joe lewandowski with conceptual EP Icarus.
Joe Lewandowski new EP is a 20 minute track inspired by the story of Icarus. Nowadays, this antic myth has never been so true, we are destroying nature to the point we jeopardize our own existence. Each part of the EP symbolizes a part of the Icarus journey. The first two tracks have a housey feeling that would translate the uplifting feeling of flying. The third part is an ambient track that symbolises the plenitude of flying with sun. Finally the last track is darker with its techno beats and acid bassline, it evokes the falling of Icarus. This EP is a psychedelic trip that wants to make us think of the way we treat our planet.

My piece is titled Mars – Cody’s Planet Suite Movement IV. Unlike most submissions, my piece follows a structure that goes from a single verse that builds up to a finale in the form of a single chorus. Afterwards, there is a dark ambient outro, inspired by the NASA Voyager recordings of the planets. The structure goes as follows: ABC (A – Verse, B – Chorus, C – Bridge/Outro). 
The main riff was originally created on guitar. I liked the simple yet melancholic and heavy feel of the melody. I adapted it for piano, which is an instrument I find more familiar and easier to play. 

The melody lasted for almost a minute, almost like a Max Richter piece, which created a challenge. I wanted to create a 3-4-minute piece that does not feel like it could be more developed if it was not for its short length. I am not sure if I succeeded at doing so, for my piece just ends up feeling like an interlude to me, which is something that I can accept.

To add to the heavy feeling of the song, I added tons of low and atmospheric sounds that felt good with the piano melody. I wanted to create a deep, depressive atmosphere to represent the desolate environment of the planet Mars. 

The finale was tricky to create. It was an interesting challenge to create something that feels both subtle yet impactful. I added an extra layer of piano that plays the same keys from the main riff but with the tempo doubled, while the other instruments remain in the same tempo. I also added a dark and slow drum beat to give the finale a punchier feeling. 

I always meant to end the piece in a creepy ambient way, to add even more darkness. For my live audio, I recorded myself saying actual thoughts that I had when I lost my cousin Dan Toker to a smoking addiction. The most fitting part that I could use that talking track was at the very end of the piece. I hoped to create something that represents the shock from losing someone while that person is still young. 

Soundtrap felt very intuitive and I really liked their sounds. I enjoyed experimenting with these sounds to create something that appealed to my liking. I still feel that my song would sound better with live instruments and better ambient sounds that can be found on other synthesizers. Regardless, this piece was fun to make and I feel quite proud of it.
