For last year's label compilation, I mentioned how I hoped to invite a guest DJ to compile the next edition, and here we are. Of course, it just had to be our long-term musical companion, a good friend of mine, and well-respected DJ, todos.

I was first introduced to todos through his well-respected Kilchurn Mix series. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, they remain some of my favorite mixes of all time (listen to them all on the ASIP site when you get a chance). His ability to craft a narrative, manipulate samples and respect the grey area between ambient and electronic music, is second-to-none.

Since blogging about his mixes all the way back in 2008, and inviting him to compile a special isolatedmix a few years later, Doug (todos) and I have stayed in touch and connected further after learning we grew up with very similar musical trajectories. Doug also coincidentally, ended up living where my family is today (and where I spent my life growing up) in a surprising twist of fate. And in 2021, after years of speaking online, we finally got to meet, play records (in real life!), and go for a long overdue beer.

I always earmarked Doug to be a part of ASIP somehow, so it is my absolute pleasure to hand over the DJ reins for the 2021 compilation edition. Doug had free choice over which tracks to choose, as long as he included one track from each release of the year. The result is a very special mix, taking us through the ASIP 2021 release catalog in his unique, signature, https://soundcloud.com/djtodos style.

The Moon In The Water.

The moon in the water is a powerful symbol, reflecting our deepest thoughts and emotions. It speaks to the fluidity of life and the constant changes we face. The moon and water represent the ebb and flow of time, reminding us that everything is temporary and that nothing stays the same.
From a philosophical perspective, the moon in the water can be seen as a metaphor for the soul's journey. Our lives are like waves constantly moving and changing, yet a deeper essence remains. This essence is our soul; just like the moon, it shines brightly and illuminates the world.
The moon in the water also holds great significance regarding the relationship between life and death. Just like the moon disappears from view each night, only to return, our lives have a beginning and an end. However, just like the moon's light continues to shine even when it is not visible to us, our impact and influence can continue to be felt long after we are gone.
In techno music, the moon in the water represents the energy and creativity that drives the genre forward. The constant movement and change of the music mirror the flow of life, reminding us to embrace change and to keep pushing forward. The deep, pulsing beats and hypnotic rhythms of techno music transport us to another world, just as the moon in the water transports us to a place of reflection and introspection.

Headliner/LaGuru  Founder of Feed The Raver
Jenny Arredondo is a true Techno enthusiast. A music and dance-floor lover. A crazy healthy raver that would dance for hours and hours to proper Techno beats and bass. She is known as the "Dancing Queen" in the underground NYC Techno scene and around the world. Her passion for music has no limits; she has music in her blood.
 
Jenny's music exploration journey began in 2012, and she plays and produces Deep Techno, Ambient and Electronica under the names "Headliner" and "La Guru". Her album "Techno Inquisition" was released on November 16th 2013 and her second album "Ubiquitous" was released on December 28th 2014. Her release "Dark Invader" was included in the compilation REGENERATION by the Spanish label Doppt Zykkler//Series on June 15th, 2015. Her track Headliner - Planck Epoch was included in the (DE19) Deep Diversity Vol. 3 - Deep Electronics Compilation released on November 5th, 2015. Her first EP "Rose Red Wounds" was released on July 16th 2021 also on the dutch label Deep Electronics. Her latest release "A New Hope" was a contribution to the Mastoid Kollektive - PINK in support of breast cancer and was featured along other tracks by amazing techno and house legends.
 
She organized underground techno events in New York for almost a decade and also hosted events in Detroit, Mexico City, Barcelona, Amsterdam and Playa del Carmen. In 2015, Headliner also became part of Female Pressure, an international network of female artists in electronic music and digital arts founded by Electric Indigo. You will often find her listening and discovering new tracks and artists, also at Techno events having the time of her life.
Feed The Raver is a podcast radio show that supports local techno artists from around the world including amazing guests like Dino Sabatini, Electric Indigo, Grand River, Saphileaum, The Alchemical Theory and many more...It also produced official press Detroit Movement Electronic Music Festival with yearly video interviews and photo coverage from 2012- 2016. Also was a media partner of Charivari Detroit festival in 2016.

Headliner - The Moon In The Water

Vi - resident of the Ciało club, member of SLAP collective. From 2022 AURA event host. Vi presented her selections in many important clubs and festivals in Poland and also at legendary Tresor; HÖR, Berlin as well as in Slovakia and the Czech Republic.Based on constant openness and searching in music for what most affects emotions and loss, Vi treats electronic music as the best therapy. She focuses on deep, raw techno but nevertheless not afraid playing with the stylistics and boldly calls her club sets eclectic. In selection Vi looks for stimuli that they transform spatial ballads into a fast, galloping groove.

Quadrant Soundscape: 
Duo consisting of Tommy Harrison (aka Asphalt Layer) and Wilson Logan (aka Scavenger) from Manchester. Together, they are the minds behind the Dub Explorations Radio Show, which has also been running live events at the famous Eastern Bloc Records for over 4 years.

The Radio Show itself has reached 100 shows, all 3 hours in length which is an insight into the dedication they have for hunting underground music to showcase and push forward. 

Over the years, the boys have featured on many podcasts across the globe, where their creative style of playing Ambient, Dub Techno, Minimal and Detroit Techno on 4 decks, while incorporating live samples is always well received. This has also led to them being invited to play many gigs in Manchester, London and Berlin.

You can also catch Quadrant Soundscape on Bloop London Radio, 12:00 – 1:00pm, on the fourth Thursday, every month for their 'Explorations into Dub' show!

Bio:

Pjusk is Rune Sagevik and Jostein Dahl Gjelsvik from the west coast of Norway – both from small villages close to nature. The sound of Pjusk is inspired by the harsh Norwegian weather and wild landscape. At the center point of the collaboration between the two is an old cabin high up in the mountains. This is where most of the music of Pjusk is made – framed by snowy peaks and the sound of cold streams.

When a person looks at or listens to something, their eyes and ears pursue things, they get stirred up, only to stop when things are gone. This activity and rest are all subjects, but the heavenly ruler becomes their slave. This is living with demons. But now if you make yourself live with a human being in all activity and rest, this human being is the heavenly ruler, who is a real human being. If when he moves, one moves with him, then the movement is the Heavenly root. When he rests, one rests with him; this is the rest of the moon cavern. Even when he alternates movement and rest for no clear reason just go along with him. When he rises and falls, rise and fall with him. That is what is called going to and fro between the root of Heaven and the moon cavern without occupying oneself with other things. (Tai Yi Jin Hua Zong Zhi / Part 8. This track is part one from an album of two experimental pieces derived from material recorded under my Rosen Corporation alias. It takes several tracks and reworks them into an ambient mixed collage, creating and evoking atmospheres and moods of sci fi urban environments. A lot of my work is inspired by Blade Runner, so this inspiration runs through the piece. It has a Vangelis sensibility, but more in an ethereal sense. There are no Vangelis samples, or samples from the film used, though some of the rain and storm samples were sourced from freesound.org. 
The two parts were recorded, mixed and arranged live in one take.

In the shimmering sunlight the city was a transparent lake, but as the sun crept down the city dissolved into a veiling grey horizon. I remember the faint remoteness as I stared out to my hometown of Los Angeles. I had recently moved back home and had expected for the rush of nostalgia to bloom into a previous self. However, there was instead a stillness that seemed to be waiting for something. The rolling hills before me arched up and down but only seemed to descend. The moments that followed dilated around me and I took solace in knowing that I was truly happy again.

This progression of music tries to embody the slowed and slurred first moments of my days rediscovering Los Angeles and the unintentional ebb and sway of finding myself again. A gradually looping state of lethargy breaks out into its own speed and dance.

As the cold approaches, I head east to the vast and ancient lands of Mongolia. Over the rugged expanses, mountains and through its capital Ulaanbaatar. 
Learning about Mongolian culture was deeply fascinating and leaves me with a yearning curiosity to discover more of the history of Mongolia.

I decided to focus on the traditional side of sound.
My selection aims to showcase the rich tradition of throat singing (höömji), long song, court music, and Mongolian pop.

It is about generating these energies that surge between bodies and soundwaves and making them flow through the environment. Vladimir Ivkovic is one of the most gifted among those who can conjure such atmospheres by working aural materials in order to create the right conditions not only for all of those intense instants to appear but for a sequence of them to persist. As one of those mythical figures, in each of his offerings, he invites us to join him in sensorial journeys through places and spaces where the musical and the mystical no longer can be set apart and such is what we have the pleasure to bring in this unique episode of Gop Cast.
