And it took a little step to have the idea to compose a single sound, to synthesize a sound. One by one, I became aware that a sound is not just a sound. The classical instrumentation up to the present day, was the instruments which we can name, has been an art of mixing. Whenever we hear sounds we are changed, we are no longer the same, after having heard certain sounds. And this is the more the case when we hear organized sounds. Having had his music on Sudbeat, Hope, and Renaissance, plus touring the globe as a DJ, as well as his monthly radio show and reviews for Tilllate Magazine, Darin really is on the top of his game and at the forefront of his musical sound. Valencia is a deep warm winner, and from the start, you can feel the quality oozing as the journey begins. The melodies are subtle but draw you in, as this track effortlessly meanders through peaks and troughs of sounds that tinkle and float. The main break encapsulates you before releasing the final smile-inducing drop. Remix duties start with the ever talented Jamie Stevens. The likeable Australian, best known from his Infusion days, has been producing for microCastle, Sudbeat, and Bedrock, as well as running his own label Chameleon Recordings. He retains the housey feel of the original, but with an injected funk and swagger that drives along beautifully. The remix swerves in a wonkier, yet still melodic direction. Its bleeps and arps work a treat, guiding the dancefloor to a frenzy right up until the breakdown, before the final uplifting moment when the bass kicks back in. Greek producer Ioannis Ntouskos aka Dousk completes the package. His enormous discography covers a wide range of musical styles and includes labels such as Bedrock, Global Underground, Vapour, plus dozens more. His love and appreciation for all genres shows here, as he's one of the few producers that can effortlessly meld together house, techno, and progressive influences into something completely new. The B-side of this humorously titled release is hands down one of my favourite tracks of all time, and definitely my favourite Levon Vincent creation. One of the few records that I can honestly say is well worth the high marketplace price, though I hope my copy gives me years of play! There's really no fitting description for this shifting chugger; it's a totally melodic and dubby slice of techno with a nice, subtle tinge of house-y-ness. It keeps going and going, with every element in its perfect place. Lots of reverb and warped sounds that build a series of layered loops from some ultimately quite simple components. For me that's the mark of perfection: a fugue-like cycle that plays on a perfect kick, bass drum, etc. And did I mention there are some VERY fat synth chords? Oh, and I just listened to it again and must add that there are some sweet pitched up lasers. I've always had a soft spot for the sound of lasers! Mmmmmm, Woman Is The Devil indeed.

In 2001 Dj Olive commenced work on a series of 'sleeping pills' designed to create deep warm enveloping environmental textures which become soft company for those who have trouble sleeping.

The first of these editions published by Room40 was Buoy (2004), followed by the aptly titled 'Sleep' (2006, though composed in 2001). Triage is the third in the series – and involves a much more complex and analog approach using many musicians, David Watson, Karl Frank, Vija Brazus and obscure vintage gear as well as additional production from Christian Fennesz.

Triage was initially exhibited in installation form at the 2008 Whitney Biennial and this published edition represents the soundtrack of the installation.

It's Just a Phase

The second DTDV set is a condensed re-format of the first: instead of a set of two double-discs with a CD for each staple of the four sounds, this was a single double-disc set that combined styles into 2 distinct strains.

This mix brings together the dubby, trippy, spacious elements of the tech house sound with the more straight up, driving tech house sounds that I have been playing for many years. It is a true journey and many have said to me that it kind of tells a story through sound. I love the idea of a mix having it's own kind of inner narrative through the progressions between the tracks. A perfect example of this is the mix from 18:10-23:40, where Minilogue and Agnès' twisted interpretation of Chaton keep working and flowing together to whip up a truly mind-bending, spiritualised 5 minutes that is almost like another track in itself. Like a double-helix of 2 intertwined records.
