This month we're so honoured to have Matthew Hayes (@matthewhayesmusic) step in with an hour-long mix. In last month's FLORA monthly newsletter, we sung the high praises of his latest collaboration with Joel Trigg, and now we're thrilled to have him contribute this mix. A huge thanks to Matthew for this beautiful mix, and we can't say this enough, but Elegant Universe, his album with Joel Trigg, is one of the best of this year. There’s an unguarded quality to all of Monica Brooks’s music. That is especially true of ‘Much Bigger Boxes’, the lead track from You’ll Sit On This Stone, a forthcoming LP she recorded before the Covid lockdown in Sydney’s Blue Mountains. The vast region feels like the perfect setting for the 14-minute track, a song so immense in scope and scale it could only have been conceived in one of the most ancient areas of the world.

As already proven on the exceptional Recant, the Sydney-based artist treats her piano like it’s an extension of herself. ‘Much Bigger Boxes’ is remarkable for its intimacy and vulnerability; it’s both haunting and huge, like it was recorded in an empty room so large that her fingers echo endlessly when they strike the piano. It is pure, uninhibited emotion—the sound of an artist so capable of using their instrument to express themselves that they manage to say all that they need to without uttering a single word. 

Monica Brooks - ‘Much Bigger Boxes’ is out December 11th via Bedroom Suck Records. You’ll Sit On This Stone will be released December 18th.
