In 2004 the Indie Rock n Roll landscape in SA music changed in the birth of The Hellphones. The band would go on to play their first ever show at an RBF Emerging Sounds Battle of the Bands, winning all 3 rounds to get into the finals, where they eventually won the event and secured a record deal with Sheer Records.

This debut album was recorded during the cold winter of 2006 at the SABC studios with the “god-like genius” of Dave Birch behind the desk, in just over 2 weeks. Entitled “This is How”, it garnered overwhelming response, achieving local number ones in the charts on Tuks FM and Kofsie FM. 

The Hellphones are an energetic, tight-as-all-hell live machine.

Taxi Violence have travelled a long and independent road to proving themselves as one of the best live acts in South Africa. Their sound can be described as blues-infused, retro rock with a pinch of sleaze and bourbon.

Hailing all the way from the depths of Pretoria, South Africa, Juggernaught are a quintessential example of rare and exhilirating rock music.

rior to the band's formation in 2007, Juggernaught's members had a colourful history of playing in other bands from a variety of different musical scenes. Juggernaught's frontman and guitarist Herman Le Roux was in metal band Shadowlord in the '90's while Jovan Tutunovic (guitar) and Alexis Schofield (drums) grew up around South Africa's hardcore punk scene before moving to the UK to form groove metal band Hellbent and Hammered. Clint Falconer comes from a rock and Jazz backround and is also the bassist for Dan Patlansky. 

Juggernaught released their first demo in 2007 entitled Vol. 1, followed shortly thereafter by 2008's debut full-length album Act of Goat. 2011 saw the band release Brown Pleather, which was a set of previously-unreleased tracks including three demo versions of tracks that later appeared on their 2012 sophomore album Bring The Meat Back. 

Considered by critics to be the band's finest work to date. Bring the Meat Back sees the band seriously coming into their own. 
with a new album and plans for an international tour in the works, Juggernaught are an enticingly unique band.

 
Avoiding the limitations of being labelled as one specific musical sub-genre, the band sees themselves as a rock band with a huge range of influences from blues, jazz, funk and metal. Since their inception, Juggernaught have performed non-stop throughout South Africa, Namibia, Mozambique and Botswana, from small local shows to huge festivals including Oppikoppi and Ramfest.

After five solo albums and receiving nine (9) South African Music Award (SAMA) nominations including Best Female Artist: Josie Field has had one of the more interesting journeys through the South African music landscape, now embracing tiny house living on a narrowboat, Field sets sail in a new direction.  

Her signature sound is a potent mix of lyricism and fire, heart-felt issues and tender constructions. She has a unique voice as well as vocal delivery style that sets her apart from the mainstream pop princesses of the music world. This marked leaning to sing about actual issues means that her guitar-led songs have an edge to them that many do not expect. Having dabbled in soul, blues and country in her third album and with strong elements of jazz coming through on her latest release, Josie is no ordinary folk musician, don’t be misled by the singer/songwriter tag

Her debut album Mercury was the spark that started the fire back in 2006. Several songs went on to receive radio play-listing and the album sold well. Josie followed that up in 2008 with Leyland which was an altogether deeper, slightly darker record.

She received three (3) SAMA and two (2) MK Award nominations for the album but has not stopped there. 1984 was released in early 2011 and was an instant hit with fans and critics alike receiving three (3) SAMA nominations in 2012 including the coveted “Best Female Artist” nomination. 

Josie Field has emerged from being the new, young singer-songwriter on the block to being an established artist with a career of depth and variety. She has stuck to her guns, developing a body of work that has to be taken seriously in its range, depth and the accumulated volume of hours behind it. Her on-going creative collaboration with producer Kevin Leicher has added structure to her output over time. Josie is a hard working artist, gigging, song-writing and recording in an on-going loop of activity.

Josie started out playing open-mic sessions wherever she could. But since then she has had airplay on every national and regional radio station in the country and shared the stage with huge international acts including James Blunt, Ziggy Marley, Westlife, Missy Higgins and most recently, Michelle Shocked. She was also one of the artists who sang for Nelson Mandela at his 90th Birthday party and performed at Fan Parks at the Semi and Finals of the Soccer World Cup 2010. 

This energetic singer has also kept herself busy with more than just shows and award ceremonies. In 2010 Josie became ambassador for the Levi Strauss Curve ID campaign, which has changed the way woman will shop for jeans forever. In the following year her song Power taken from 1984, was partnered with the Suzuki Kizashi advertising campaign. 

2011 saw Field organize her own music festival, The Drake Music Festival, which she promoted, managed and ran herself. Three albums is a career for many artists in South Africa, but Josie has no intention of stopping anytime soon. Having teamed up with Laurie Levine (Americana singer songwriter) in 2013 for Side By Side, their folksy side project, which was dubbed SA’s Best Collaboration of the Year and with an acoustic album just released, 2014 looks very bright indeed.

The Black Cat Bones – ‘The Long Drive’ album release

The Black Cat Bones’ second album ‘The Long Drive’ is set to be released on 1 October 2011.

The album is a culmination of experiences gathered from a demanding two-year touring and performing schedule, reflecting every emotion, every triumph, and every loss - on the road, on stage, and in life. Following their well-received debut release ‘Silverton Swamp Songs’ (2009), ‘The Long Drive’ combines both the timeless energetic blues-rock sound of the band with a new, mature and innovative approach to their music. Well known songwriter Koos Kombuis calls it ‘a fusion of Blues and Rock n Roll, but they do it so damn good that it sounds like something totally new..’

‘The Long Drive’ was recorded between May and September 2011 at Wolmer Records together with SAMA award-winning producer Lanie van der Walt, and combines the song writing skills of vocalist Kobus de Kock jr and guitarist Andre Kriel with the infectious rhythmic offerings of Chris van der Walt on Bass and Keyboards and Jason Hinch on drums and percussion. The album contains 10 original tracks featuring the breathtaking vocal harmonies of Tammy Wilson (Southern Gypsy Queen), as well as a slow but fervent version of Janis Joplin’s ‘Ball and Chain’ with Jacob Wulana from ‘Tidal Waves’ fame on Hammond Organ. The songs range from honest and soulful compositions that touch on everyday adversities to hard-driving Blues-with-attitude, unmistakably matching the intensity of their live shows.

The first single ‘The Long Drive’ is set to hit the airwaves in late September, followed by launch events at The Radium Beer Hall in Orange Grove, Johannesburg (01 October), and Cafe Barcelona in Elardus Park, Pretoria (14 October). The Mitten Fits are a rootsy 2 piece acoustic band that trade in gritty songs with male and female harmonies. Formed as a one-off for a fundraiser, their bond as a musical unit led them to continue writing and performing, incorporating a diversity of unique covers with a strong original set.

The Mitten Fits have found themselves in stellar company. Currently they have played with alt. Country rockers Crystal Park, indie scenesters Short Straw, acoustic dynamo’s Owl & Simone, the powerhouse One Night Stands,Idol runner-up Mark Haze just to name a few :) 

We love spending time with people of note and so we try incorporate all kinds of wonder and power that is out there in the world to include this inspirational sound that is The Mitten Fits. 

Our objective is to bring music back to its natural state, to challenge the normal and the mundane in order to find a new voice in song delivery. Choosing rawness over pretension, the Mitten Fits are about having a good time with their music. They believe in the magic of song.
