PIE JESU In memoriam Laura Searle 

Hofmeyr wrote this setting of the words “Dear Lord Jesus, grant them rest”  from the Requiem mass on the day his beloved piano teacher and mentor, Laura Searle, passed away. It was first performed at her funeral.

The Concerto for Two Pianos and Orchestra was commissioned by Lionel Bowman to celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of British duo Nettle&Markham. The work is in three movements, like the concerto of the Classical era, and contains many references, some ironic and some more serious, to the musical practice of that time.

The second movement takes is in the shape of a lyrical, but strictly canonic nocturne in ABA form, in which the second piano echoes the first throughout at the distance of a bar. The two themes are announced by the pianos, after which the second theme is repeated by the orchestra in sevenfold canon. The strings, who take over the role of the first piano, are accompanied by that instrument, and are echoed by the woodwinds, accompanied by the second piano. The reprise of the A section on the pianos  is accompanied by references to the B section on strings and woodwind.

'It takes two…' consists of two tangos of contrasting character. The first, Tango amabile, is sunny and cheerful, while the second, Tango lugubre, is dark and dramatic. Nevertheless, the two share several musical gestures, and at the end of the second, the main themes of the two are combined.
