So the Disquiet Junto assignment this week was simply to make a piece of music in 29/16 time. This is a super weird time signature. I remembered fooling about with Dilla-type beats using quintuplets (where you count 5s between every beat) and I figured exploring groups of 5 16ths might be worth it. It's a strange feeling to try and take a very mathsy approach, like fitting beats tightly on a fixed grid of 29 steps, and try to replicate some kind of "real" shuffle.

Clicks + Cuts [Disquiet0665]

Nothing is fixed, everything flows

Step 1: Locate the latest instrument, piece of music/sound software, or related technology that has come into your possession. 
Step 2: Employ only the single thing identified in Step 1 to compose and record a short track.

My latest purchase was a Tibetan Bowl you see in the photo, I bought it last Sunday in a garage sale here in Paris.  It was a deal and included 100 incense sticks ....
Now: my previous purchase was, like a year ago, another Tibetan Bowl, so I did many recordings using that one  in the past year. But the challenge forces me to go back into the bronze age. Again.

I used the two sound you make with this thing, _Tap_ that's a "hit" on the edge of the bowl with the fat wood stick/mallet and a _Rub_ drone turning the stick around the bowl's edges.
Then I just pitched up and down to several different notes and constructed this soundscape. But the source is just that single bowl. And 40 sec Lexicon Reverbs with Wah Wah...

No synth used off course, nothing but the bowl.

i think the last instrument i got was art pyrite softsynth. i try not to get too much new stuff; work with what i've got (depth v breadth / necessity is the mother of invention etc)

i played for a few minutes and turned up the depth and feedback on the drone setting throughout. weirdly when i looked at the recording it said i'd been playing for over 9 minutes. just did a little limiting and normalized it.

This is two assignments in one. First we have the Disquiet Junto 372 in which we were asked to do something with our latest instrument, which, in my case, is VCV Rack. On the other hand there is VCV Rack's inventor/main programmer Andrew Belt (Infinitely many thanks, Andrew!!)who states: "I personally recommend that you attempt to push the Fundamental modules to their limits before moving on to other official or third-party plugins." So this is my attempt. Did I succeed? Well, as you can see in the picture, there's still one module unused, so probably next up will be More Fundamental Limits, Further Fundamental Limits and possibly even Extreme Fundamental Limits. That is, if I can bring up the patience to keep away from other plugins.
About the patch: I am rather pleased with the idea of getting two melodies from one sequencer by putting it upside down with 8verter and transposing it a third. I also liked experimenting with the timbre of the bass by means of hard sync and an LFO. The rest is pretty much straight forward, I guess.

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto. 

I've written for Nature, Pitchfork, The Wire, Down Beat, Boing Boing, NewMusicBox, Red Bull Music Academy, Art Practical, the website of The Atlantic, and many other publications. 

I've exhibited sound art at galleries in Los Angeles (Crewest), Manhattan (apex art), and Dubai (DUTAC), and I had a audio-visual installation at the San Jose Museum of Art as part of its 45th anniversary.

And since 1996 I've run the website Disquiet.com about the intersection of sound, art, and technology.

There was a time when I was involved in Science! But that was a mistake. My Passion is music. I play the pipe-organ and synthesizer, I play the organ in a few bands and I like Apple computers. I discovered SuperCollider and VCV Rack: great ways of making sounds. Enjoy them on SoundCloud!
