When I listened to the other submissions for Disquiet Junto 0487, it got me a little worried, because someone else had already used the sound of a spoon and a cup of coffee. And it was a really nice track. On the other hand: no-one seemed to have produced something that remotely sounded like a carillon. So here's my track, made in VCV Rack. The sound of a spoon hitting a cup of coffee was recorded and loaded into the Nysthi Quadsimpler. I made a simple chord sequence and a melody and then I added some reverb. And that's it! Enjoy...

This week's assignment for the Disquiet Junto was "Record a song using only your voice transformed beyond recognition". So I first sang a high E and transposed it to a low C for the basses and then I sang a low G and transposed it to a high C for the leading voice and the harmonies. I also made a few drum sounds using only my mouth. I loaded all sounds in Nysthi's Quadsimpler in VCV Rack and added a few effects (chorus, saturation, reverb).
Next question was: what to play? Purely coincidentially I stumbled upon a five year old video by Andrew Huang ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Utd3s5w-M3I ) in which he invited the viewers to complete a musical sentence. And that's what I did.

My submission for the Disquiet Junto 0539: Let your slow breathing guide a piece of music.
I recorded my breath and loaded it into Nysthi's Quad Simpler. I derived two melodies, a fast one and a slow bass melody, by applying sample & hold to the recording. The loudness of the recording also controls the brightness of the high melody. And then I introduced two more melodies that may have been inspired by Tangerine Dream's Atem and Pink Floyd's Breathe. The tempo is an approximation of the speed of my breath, but since my breathing is not perfectly regular, there is no strict rhythm in the whole piece.

This is my submission for the Disquiet Junto 0541 and the assignment was: Record some 10BPM techno.
Last time we did something at 10 bpm (https://soundcloud.com/henklasschuit/waltz-at-10-bpm-disquiet0299), I definitely did not want to make something on the computer in normal speed and slow it down afterwards, so I played it live. This time, however, we have techno and that's a different story. First I searched WikiPedia to find out what techno exactly is. Then I made 8 bars of what I thought was techno in VCV Rack. Then I slowed down the clock (you may see it says "40", but it is counting 16th notes) and slowed down the LFO's and Envelope Generators accordingly. And that's it!

This is my submission to the Disquiet Junto 549 and the assignment was "Get intentional with stereo". Usually I make a habit of putting all voices in my pieces purposefully on a position in the stereo spectrum or let them move around in a useful way. For this assignment I took this to a higher level. The kick and the snare are jumping from side to side. The hihat is happily hopping around. The bass just wobbles a bit. There are two melodies in which the stereoposition is connected to the pitch. There is a low melody on the left and a high melody on the right and they meet somewhere in the center.

My submission to the #DisquietJunto 553 with the assignment: Record in a steady tempo but break it on occasion. It's a simple 8-step sequence. Gates from the 5th and 7th step are sent through a Bernoulli gate, which is set to 10%, to the reset intput. So on avarage 1 in 10 times step number 5 and 6 are played and 1 in 100 step 7 and 8. The gate from step 8 is connected to the Stop-input and a cymbel-sound, so after on avarage 100 cycles the piece will end with a crash. Every first step moves the second sequence which moves the bass and the melody and chords with it. The result is a simple tune that would nicely disappear into the background, except every now and then something happens that makes you look up.

This is my submission for the Disquiet Junto 0559 and the assignment was: Compose your personal entrance and exit cues for conference calls.
Well, I can't make it more personal than by using my own name, including my first two official initials, so that will be H.F. Lasschuit. And then I let myself be inspired by the musical signatures of Bach and Shostakovitch. H is the German name for the B, La is the French name for the A, the S becomes E flat (which we call Es). "Uit" is Dutch for "the end". So for my entrance tone I use the two initials, H and F, that become B and F with some nice delay and for the exit tone La, S, S, C, H and "uit" become A, E flat, E flat, C, B and there it stops: the end! I gave them a nice filter sweep and drenched them in reverb.

For the #disquiet junto nr. 561, "Rework environmental sound recordings with Aphex Twin’s new software", I used "Bird call in spring" by jmiddlesworth, "Ambience, Night wildlife" by InspectorJ amd "Heavy Rain" by lebaston100. After some experimenting to find out how to get any sound at all out of this app, I just pressed Play and Record and this is the result. Now we know how Aphex Twin does it (and why it is so boring).

Initially they are tuned in octaves, but 2 of the 3 are detuned upwards until they reach a useful interval (third and fifth). After some time they are detuned back down again.

Submission to the Disquiet Junto 0608 with the assignment "Using a speech-to-text tool, turn a field recording into instructions for a composition".
I recorded 15 minutes of sound from my balcony. There was water dripping from the roof-gutter, traffic and some various noises. I loaded this in Mac Whisper with three different settings: Base, Small and Tiny. Base and Small gave some more or less intelligible text and Tiny gave some descriptions for sounds: lots of bangs, ticks, clicks, bells and some music. After removing double words I loaded the two texts into Nysthi's S.A.M. and tried to make the best of the described sounds.

This was a tough one. I think I topped this assignment years ago in my version of Terry Riley's In C, played by SuperCollider, ( https://soundcloud.com/henklasschuit/terry-rileys-in-c-version-2 )in which the decision to switch to the next pattern is indeed influenced by what the other virtual members of the orchestra are playing, according to Terry Riley's rules. But that took me months to make and also I wanted to make something completely different. Furthermore the piece had to have some meditative quality because, of course, I would like to qualify for the September 29 event. So I returned to project 323, Music for meditation ( https://soundcloud.com/henklasschuit/music-for-meditation-disquiet0323 ), in which we learned that such music has to have a bell signal at the beginning and at the end. The bell in this case is sounded with a certain degree of probability and 10 seconds later the bright ideas start flowing by means of a nice soothing C major arpeggio. That's the first listening. There is a delay on that arpeggio and the amount of feedback is kept within reasonable bounds by an envelope follower. That's the second listening. The meditation is ended 10 seconds after the second bell.

This was made for the #disquiet Junto 612 and the assignment was: Walk the listener through variations on the same percussive instrument. So I built a drum in VCV Rack, made several instances of it and programmed a couple of riffs. The first riff, which I made up myself, is played on two drums with different tuning. At the end I added a player who bangs the drum like monkeys do and in between you might recognise some things.

Years ago I made this patch in VCV Rack (version 1, mind you!) to show how easy it is to make polyrhythms using Frozen Wastelands BPM LFO. Now I only had to add some kind of build-up to comply with this week's assignment from the Disquiet Junto. I chose Squinky Labs Graycode, so that any possible combination of instruments will be heard. 

There are eight instruments. A kick is heard on every first and third beat, a snare on every second and fourth, a tom between the beats and a hihat plays eighth notes. Then the fun starts: a ride plays triplets, a rimshot quintuplets and a cowbell septuplets. Finally there is a "swoosh" for which the BPM LFO was set to (well, why not?) 11:73.

This was made for the #Disquiet Junto 0622 with the assignment: How do you depict a shadow in sound? A shadow is where the light is blocked, so to depict that in sound I would use a notch filter, I took one of my older works (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VXThYYBg-o) and fed it into a multimode filter. I recorded the output of the notch filter in the right channel and the output of the corresponding bandpassfilter in the left channel, so that you can hear what is in the shadow, so to speak. To appreciate better what is going on, you might like to listen to the left an right channel seperately.

Some 52 years ago there was this very famous psychedelic rockband that had this song about someone having breakfast. The slow echo on his voice made for a fine psychedelic atmosphere. And now there is the Disquiet Junto 0625 that asks:What does this room sound like? It is a not too large room with bare concrete walls, so there will be a strong fast echo that will make for a fine neurotic atmosphere. So I recorded myself having lunch, added a fasy echo and filled the silent passages with music. I had just begun experimenting with copying a sequence and sending the clock signals through a Bernoulli Gate at 50%. I added a delay, panned the dry signals hard left and right and the delayed signals hard right and left. It adds nicely to the neuroticism.

Welcome to the laboratory, especially built for the #Disquiet Junto Project 0628: Explore an aspect of the ancient occult science using music. In this case it's about the third stage of transformation of matter: separation. And since it should be associated with the element Air, it must be distillation. First we ignite our bunsen-burner and open the tap for cooling water. Soon the mixture in  the flask on the left starts boiling. Tiny puffs of the purified matter are blown into the cooling device. Some moments later, we hear drops of the purified matter fall into the cold flask on the right. When the mixture has ran out of the stuff we want, it stops boiling, we put out the bunsen burner and turn off the tap.
Regarding air: the puffs and drops seem to sing a melody that may be slightly inspired by The Hollies' "The Air That I Breathe".

Almost 10 and a half years ago I made a short videoclip of a whistling windmill on the beach of the beautiful island of Schiermonnikoog. And then there was the Disquiet Junto 0632 with the assignment: do something wit wind shear in a fieldrecording. In the recording was a man speaking in the background and his speech had a nice melody to it. That gave me the idea to put the recording into music. The peaks of the wind trigger four percussion instruments, the whistling tones are randomly alternated and I derived a melody from  the recording by sample & hold to emphasize the rhythm (13 bars of 3/8)

This was made for the disquiet junti 0642 with the assignment: Use carbonation to make a beat. I recorded the sound of opening some beer and soda bottles, pitched one of them down to create a kickdrum an dloded then all in Nysthi's QuadSimpler. In search of an appropriate melody, I borrowed the famous drinking song from Siegmund Romberg's operetta The Student Prince and converted it into 4/4 beat. And then added a bass.

Yeah, let's do the Bell Thing! The Bell Thing was inspired by an experiment that my brother did on his sampler, holding the keys down with boxes of musicassettes. Sounds great, looks ehm... interesting. There are several reasons to do this. First of all I definitely wanted to do The Bell Thing in SuperCollider. Furthermore tomorrow is my mother's 86th birthday and I was wondering if I could make a computercomposition that she would enjoy listening to. And finally it can be done with a tiny amount of code, so it could be a SCtweet. Here it is:

The Bell Thing

This is my first experiment with the VCV Rack virtual modular synthesizer. (This is fun!) (This is BIG fun!!)

First experiment with VCV Rack

This is two assignments in one. First we have the Disquiet Junto 372 in which we were asked to do something with our latest instrument, which, in my case, is VCV Rack. On the other hand there is VCV Rack's inventor/main programmer Andrew Belt (Infinitely many thanks, Andrew!!)who states: "I personally recommend that you attempt to push the Fundamental modules to their limits before moving on to other official or third-party plugins." So this is my attempt. Did I succeed? Well, as you can see in the picture, there's still one module unused, so probably next up will be More Fundamental Limits, Further Fundamental Limits and possibly even Extreme Fundamental Limits. That is, if I can bring up the patience to keep away from other plugins.
About the patch: I am rather pleased with the idea of getting two melodies from one sequencer by putting it upside down with 8verter and transposing it a third. I also liked experimenting with the timbre of the bass by means of hard sync and an LFO. The rest is pretty much straight forward, I guess.

I tripled the speed of this, effectively transposing the piece to e minor with a G major fragment. I added the same rhythm as last week and a bassline in G major. And then it turned out to be a quite happy ditty! Obviously I played a ritardando near the end and one weekend was too short a time for me to solve that. Maybe next time...

Seven years ago I made this thunderstorm in SuperCollider ( https://soundcloud.com/henklasschuit/discovering-supercollider02 )and ever since I discovered VCV Rack, I've been contemplating the idea of doing the same thing in the virtual modular system. This week's Disquiet Junto gave me the perfect opportunity to realize this plan, so here it is!

The search for prime numbers from 1 to 100 is represented by sound. Channel 1: the numbers, channel 0: the divisors. In the center: a fm-sound with a carrier that is related to the number and a modulator that is related to the divisor. A harmonic sound means the carrier is a multiple of the modulator, so the number is a multiple of the divisor. Therefor a harmonic sound means: not a prime number. When a new prime number is encountered, the list of prime numbers is played.

The Assignment: Write a short piece of music that gets slower and slower as it proceeds
I used two melodies (that may have been slightly inspired by fragments from Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon), some percussion and noise. I like the way the different layers come to the front successively. I used a simple LFO as a clock and it was controlled by a slow envelope generator.

This is the first time I participate in the annual ice cubes challenge of the Disquiet Junto. I first recorded the sound of ice cubes falling into a glass in Audacity. Then I slowed the recording down 10 and 50 times. I made three versions of a 30 times slowed down recording: with pitch change, without pitch change and paulstretch. I also made a reversed version of the original recording.
I loaded all recordings in Nysthi's Quad Simpler in VCV Rack. The original recording goes through a delay for a nice stereo rhythm. The three 30 times slowed down versions are combined to make a comfy bed for the basses and melodies to lie in. They are triggered every now and then bij the EOC-trigger of the 10 times slowed down version. The 50 times slowed down version makes for a really deep bass, but it also provides, through an envelope follower, CV for the pitch of a sawtooth that is filtered and the cut-off frequency is controlled by the reverse recording (also through an envelope follower). This is triggered by the EOC-trigger of the original recording, to get some nice synchronicity.
After pondering the relevant questions of how to start and how to stop, I came up with this.
