Disquiet Junto Project 0561: Samplelicker
The Assignment: Rework environmental sound recordings with Aphex Twin’s new software.

Step 1: There’s a new piece of freely available software called Samplebrain. It was designed by Aphex Twin and developed by Dave Griffiths of Then Try This. Download Samplebrain and read up at:

Step 2: Create a piece of music using Samplebrain. For source audio, only use sounds tagged “bird” or “rain” or “night” from freesound.org. Use as many as you like. Be sure to credit the source material when posting your finished track.

Disquiet Junto Project 0561: Samplelicker

i used samplebrain, searching for 'rain beat' on freesound, found this:
https://freesound.org/people/tictac9/sounds/530585/
and used it as a 'target sound'(since it was tagged 'rain' it fit the disquiet project's instructions), and used other sounds tagged 'rain', 'night', and 'bird'(which were more like sound-design/field-recordings:

"339326__inspectorj__bird-whistling-a"
"352514__inspectorj__ambience-night-wildlife-a"
"531947__straget__the-rain-falls-against-the-parasol") for the 'brain contents' of samplebrain..

For the #disquiet junto nr. 561, "Rework environmental sound recordings with Aphex Twin’s new software", I used "Bird call in spring" by jmiddlesworth, "Ambience, Night wildlife" by InspectorJ amd "Heavy Rain" by lebaston100. After some experimenting to find out how to get any sound at all out of this app, I just pressed Play and Record and this is the result. Now we know how Aphex Twin does it (and why it is so boring).

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto. 

I've written for Nature, Pitchfork, The Wire, Down Beat, Boing Boing, NewMusicBox, Red Bull Music Academy, Art Practical, the website of The Atlantic, and many other publications. 

I've exhibited sound art at galleries in Los Angeles (Crewest), Manhattan (apex art), and Dubai (DUTAC), and I had a audio-visual installation at the San Jose Museum of Art as part of its 45th anniversary.

And since 1996 I've run the website Disquiet.com about the intersection of sound, art, and technology.

There was a time when I was involved in Science! But that was a mistake. My Passion is music. I play the pipe-organ and synthesizer, I play the organ in a few bands and I like Apple computers. I discovered SuperCollider and VCV Rack: great ways of making sounds. Enjoy them on SoundCloud!
