Premiere: Corell - Turbulent Flow

Tresor welcomes Israel Vines to the family.

Bred in the 90's U.S. Midwest party scene, Israel Vines has since carved out a singular space in the American underground as a DJ, remixer, and producer. In 2015, he joined forces with Detroit's legendary Interdimensional Transmissions crew to showcase his post-techno excursions on their sublabel Eye Teeth, on which his debut album, "And Now We Know Nothing", was released in 2020 following a string of highly rated 12" EPs.

"Voices", a six track EP delivered for Tresor, sees Vines approaching his finest form. Misty, breathtaking atmospheres and distorted vocals waft like murmuring ghosts across concrete floors, trailed by columns of light and beings from another realm. Broken kicks, halftime snares, outer-world synthetic tones and interlocking bass-heavy polyrhythms abound, combining to create a boundary-pushing take on the techno blueprint.

This is futurist energy commingled with raw, unrestrained spirit – honest, pure and intense.

This release is dedicated with love to the memory of Greg Mudge (1974-2021) - Community leader, restaurateur, inspiration, dear friend to many, and a pillar of the Detroit Techno scene for nearly three decades.

For its seventh release, Obscura - the thriving label of Italian trio Agents Of Time - returns to the compilation format to welcome exciting new talents and core label acts. 

‘East Coast’, the Agents Of Time track which opens the release, is at once tough and atmospheric, with delicate pads suspended above the rugged, syncopated rhythm. London Modular Alliance complete the A-side with an organic jam of bleeps, bass and crisp percussion. Next, Australian Jensen Interceptor contributes a fresh cut of rapid-fire electro which leads neatly into the sci-fi tones of ‘Welcome To My World’ by newcomer Golden Virgo. 

Following a full EP on Obscura earlier this year, Hiver is back with the elastic bassline and dreamy arpeggios of ‘Stasys’. Orbe, a remixer on Hiver’s EP, impresses with ‘Never Comes’, a similarly restrained and endlessly detailed journey through the depths. 

The final side is split between Laguna and Kris Wadsworth. The former tunnels further into the hypnotic side of Obscura’s sound whilst Wadsworth’s crunchy, Detroit techno ends the release on a high. With ‘From Sound To Silence 2’, Agents Of Time have compiled eight, stand-out tracks to explore the full range of their dancefloor sensibilities.

Human life happens at different levels, both in the mind and the body. The two are so deeply connected that changing one immediately affects the other. For instance, when we are worried and caught up in our thoughts, the mind sends signals to the body - leaving it closed and crunched. Contrarily, when the mind feels clear and elated - the body relaxes and opens up.
The way the body moves feeds back to the mind, affecting its state accordingly. When the body contracts, our thoughts flow toward negative outcomes, or worse, they stagnate. When the body opens wide to the environment, the mind clears up and sees new possibilities ready to be taken.
The mind-body feedback shows the incredibly strong connection between the two components of our being, making us aware of the potential of using either to positively condition the entire system.

Iron bars disguised as safety. You thought I would stay with you forever, in the limbo of that grounded shrinking quadrant, drip-fed. Your pet. Your lab rat. For a while there I totally lost myself, sinking further and further under your sedation. Life became colourless. And then there was nothing. But in the curlicues of deep encompassing darkness, that’s when I realised: I wasn’t the weak one. It was you all along. You needed me. I was the prop that stopped you from falling down. Grey Series 04 comes from the farthest corner of Eastern Europe courtesy of Ukrainian techno pioneer, photographer and designer Stanislav Tolkachev. Like the sullen eerie beauty of his black and white photography, Tolkachev’s music explores the darker, surreal fringes of electronic music in its purest, rawest state. Retroactive seams run through his audio and visual output to date from the grainy analogue qualities of his Detroit-facing sound, through to the classic stills that emboss his discography. They are almost one and the same, both challenging and re-contextualising the past with modern sentiment, agendas and hidden meanings pursing with intrigue and ambiguity. ‘Depth of light’ sees Tolkachev plot more intoxicating, caustic dream sequences, translating fitful night terrors into a diverse and multifunctional EP. Beginning with the woozy title track we confront fears (“Like a cat’s shadow”) and anxieties (“Break something that breaks you”) on the feverish A-side, before flipping over for reserved reprieve (“No home no flag”) and acid-washed revenge (“Don't shit on your own doorstep”). And then we awake. Tired, sweaty, but satisfied.

As the resident DJ of Grounded Theory, one of its founders, curator of its celebrated events, and a DJ of worldwide renown for ability and tastes, Henning Baer forged his enviable résumé with his own hands. 

Since its beginning in 2009, Grounded Theory has grown from a bracing new idea in Berlin techno to an institution of artistic nightlife both at its home and around the continent. Directed with acute vision and unerring judgment, its philosophy extracted from Henning’s long years at the front lines of electronic music, it remains diverse and cutting edge. Mirroring Henning Baer's DJ sets, Grounded Theory combines music from different eras and areas, remaining rooted in techno while shedding light on sounds less frequently heard on Berlin dance floors: forward UK music, experimental electronics, and underground techno names from across the globe, both new and established.   

Henning Baer is asserting greater independence with innovative new production styles on a recent EP for Taanstaafl Planets. The launch of his own MANHIGH imprint buttresses the foundation of his own work, to be built up alongside a select few whose productions meet the curatorial acumen of one of techno’s finest ears. After esteemed releases on Sonic Groove, K209 and elsewhere, fans worldwide have much to look forward to from a label whose standards match those of Grounded Theory. 

Already a respected artist, Henning’s diligence has transported him from the counter to the shelves of Hardwax and from the floor to the booth of Berghain in regular appearances. Now he is building further upon these impressive accomplishments, profoundly shaping contemporary techno from recent memory into the foreseeable future.
