This is a recording of the opening 2'30" of the piece.

     A thread, represented by the pitch E, runs through Weft. Three principal warps are woven over and under this central thread, creating the musical fabric. As surface rhythm accelerates, harmonic and textural complexity increases. Gradually, the weave is tightened, so that what once represented two loosely threaded minutes of music, occupies a single compact measure.
     The "Zoetrope" series mixes together disparate elements in teeming sound masses to see if they can be made to sound as one. How does their coming together and falling apart enrich or erase the individual motifs' identities? And which of their qualities do the individual motifs end up contributing to the whole? This series is inspired by the pre-cinematic animation device the "Zoetrope" and emulates its achievement of cohesion through speed, varied imitation and repetition.

     Weft (trame) est parcouru par un fil, représenté par la note mi. Trois chaînes principales sont tissés par-dessus et par-dessous cette trame, créant l’étoffe musical. Tandis que l’activité rythmique accélère, la texture et l’harmonie s’enrichissent. Au fur et à mesure, le tissu se serre. Ce qui représente deux minutes entières de musique au début de la pièce, se réduit en une seule mesure à la fin.
     Les morceaux nommés zoetrope présentent des accumulations d’objets sonores et de gestes qui se transforment à travers un langage d’imitations variées. En gérant la vitesse globale et le contenu de ces accumulations, j’espère poser des questions telles que : « Comment est-ce que la construction de la masse efface ou enrichit les identités individuelles ? » et « Quelles qualités des individus contribuent finalement à l’identité perçue de la masse ? » Ce projet est inspiré par la machine d’animation le zoetrope et cherche à incarner son mécanisme de vitesse et d’imitations variées en musique.

In “aux déBris” I am interested in the exploration of defined points of convergence related to aspects of a-synchronicity, dis-continuity, and de-construction of sonic actions. Behavior, plasticity, and mechanic rigidity are in the epicenter of my artistic research while forging the embedded rhythmicities and temporalities of the sonic canvas of the piece. What I find particularly intriguing is the illusory hybridity between the human and non-human in an attempt to explore recursive, musical situations that become mechanical and electrified. Therefore, the piece is exploring the resulting perceptual complexities and multiplicities related to distorted and exhausting phenomena of repetition and re/de-construction. “aux déBris” is a piece for flute, clarinet, piano, harp, violin, and cello and is written for and heartily dedicated to the Yann Robin and the members of the MULTILATéRALE ensemble.

The European fire-bellied toad is, in fact, a frog. (No fire, either.) However, this is more than compensated by its satisfyingly fun-to-say Latin name: Bombina bombina. They also produce antimicrobial peptides in their skin secretions – the even more fun-to-say ‘bombinins’. 

Native to eastern mainland Europe – recorded here in the protected land of Poland’s Barycz Valley Landscape Park – they use their internal vocal sacs to produce their “whoop” call: the mournful, slow-motion honk immortalized here. Imagine the sound that clowns might make when they cry and you won’t be far off.

A few days ago, we had some strong rainfall and I recorded its sound at the open bedroom window. I then created some chords and drones in with the Microfreak, drenched it all in some nice Valhalla reverbs, and here it is: A somber journey through the rain to end all rains.
