**Honorable mention in the 2020 ‘When Tuba Come One’ International Composition Competition**

Persevere and Rebuild, for the Sun will Rise Again was written for the 2020 ‘When Tuba Come One’ International Composition Competition, where it received an honorable mention and will be recorded on the When Tuba Come One Quartet’s upcoming CD later in 2021. Dedicated to all of the healthcare workers working on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic, Persevere and Rebuild begins with a gorgeous slow section before shifting into faster, more optimistic territory, in which the two top voices are featured in rapid-fire solos. The tubas then provide a brief, thoughtful soli, where a temporarily calm heartbeat can be heard. The work ends with a driving, jubilant finale reminiscent of British brass band and Salvation Army band music.

Li Qi - Seed Of Orchid

A native Michigander whose music has been described as having an "excellent mix of tonal vocabulary" and being "very thoughtful and concise" (Dr. Chris Combest, ITEA), Ian Lester (b. 1994) is an award-winning composer and performer pursuing his Doctorate degree in euphonium performance and Master’s degree in composition at the University of Missouri – Kansas City, where his composition teachers include Dr. Paul Rudy, Dr. Yotam Haber, and Chen Yi. Ian’s compositions are tonal and focus on melodic and rhythmic structure, drawing inspiration from film music and Romantic Era music. Ian received his Bachelor’s degree in euphonium performance and pursued additional composition studies at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan. At Oakland, Ian was principal euphonium in the school's top wind ensemble and its award-winning brass band. In 2014, Ian was named a national finalist for the M.T.N.A. Senior Brass Solo Competition, and the following year, was a finalist for the 2015 Oakland University Orchestral Concerto Competition. In 2017, Ian was named the winner of the Michigan M.T.N.A. Young Artist Brass Solo Competition and runner-up for the East Central Regional Competition. 

        Ian enjoyed a successful chamber music experience at OU, having been named a winner of the 2014 and 2017 Oakland University Distinguished Student in Chamber Music award along with receiving 2nd Place in the Adult Chamber Music Competition at both the 2016 and 2017 North American Brass Band Championships in Fort Wayne, Indiana with his tuba quartet Tubas Ignis. At UMKC, Ian served as the graduate euphonium teaching assistant from 2018-2020 and is a member of the Conservatory's prestigious Wind Symphony and Tuba/Euphonium Ensemble. Ian is principal euphonium of the Fountain City Academy Brass Band and is a substitute for the Fountain City Brass Band. In 2019, Ian won 1st prize in the North American Brass Band Championship's Adult Baritone/Euphonium Slow Melody Solo Competition. 

         Ian is an avid composer with his works premiered by performers such as the Julius Quartet, the North Texas Euphonium Quartet, In Motus Tuba Quartet, Steve Darling, Jonathan W. Voth, Richard Demy, Irving Ray, Louis Setzer, Thomas Stein, the University of Missouri-Kansas City, Oakland University, and IUP Tuba/Euphonium Ensembles, Conviviality Trio, Tubas Ignis, the Flex Saxophone Quartet, and the Oakland University Brass Band and Wind Symphony in venues such as Carnegie Hall, Fort Myer, and numerous universities and recital halls in several countries. In December of 2016, Ian’s composition Sonata for Tuba ‘Hades God of the Underworld’ won the Pershing’s Own U.S. Army Band Tuba-Euphonium Composition Competition where the version for contrabass tuba received its world premiere at the 2017 Tuba-Euphonium Conference in Arlington, Virginia. The bass tuba version of Hades was premiered by Steve Darling in October of 2017 and can be heard on his debut CD "Dualities". In June of 2018, Ian was named the winner of the highly competitive inaugural North Texas Euphonium Quartet Composition Competition with his piece Reminiscence and Death Machine, which can be heard on the quartet’s debut CD "Machines". In 2020, two of Ian's works, INTO THE MADHOUSE for solo tuba and Reflect, Refract for solo euphonium were selected as honorable mentions for the inaugural Leonard Falcone Call for Solo Works. In 2021, Ian won the Mirari Brass Quintet Call for Scores with his work Three Episodes for Brass Quintet. That same year, Ian was one of ten composers accepted into the Julius Quartet’s EMERGE SOLSTICE summer workshop, where Ian worked with the world-renowned Julius String Quartet and Grammy Award-winning composer Steven Mackey.

Aaron Myers-Brooks is a composer, educator, and performer of diverse interests who comes to music by way of rock and metal’s avant-garde. Born and raised in Greenville, North Carolina by visual artist parents, he developed an interest in creativity at a young age, first via drawing as a child, and later with 4-track home recording during his teenage years, subsequently finding a home in the contemporary classical and DIY rock worlds in college. He completed doctoral studies in theory and composition at the University of Pittsburgh in the spring of 2014. He is currently active as a Pittsburgh-based composer and teacher, and as a guitarist in math-metal band Auto-Replicant. Aaron has composed in various styles, but always attempts to maintain a quirky and exciting approach to rhythmic energy in his music. Much of his recent work has focused on microtonal electric-guitar writing, both through alternate tunings, and on his recently acquired 17-notes-per-octave instrument. He has written pieces at the request of the North Carolina New Music Initiative, Collide-O-Scope Music, Patchwork, and Kamratōn, among others. He has participated in the Beyond 2020: Microtonal Music Festival, the Wellesley Composers Conference, the soundSCAPE Festival, the PSO Young Composers Reading, and the Cleveland Composers Recording Institute. As an educator, Aaron has largely focused on teaching Electronic Music and Theory, recently developing Pitt's first Ableton beat-making course, and assisting in the development of a music theory curriculum which integrates a broad variety of musics and perspectives.

California flutist Alan Berquist performs and teaches in the SF Bay Area. Degrees from Florida State University (DM, BM), University of Wisconsin-Madison (MM), and Carnegie Mellon University (Performance Certificate). His primary teachers include Eva Amsler, Alberto Almarza, Stephanie Jutt, and Amy Likar.
