In “aux déBris” I am interested in the exploration of defined points of convergence related to aspects of a-synchronicity, dis-continuity, and de-construction of sonic actions. Behavior, plasticity, and mechanic rigidity are in the epicenter of my artistic research while forging the embedded rhythmicities and temporalities of the sonic canvas of the piece. What I find particularly intriguing is the illusory hybridity between the human and non-human in an attempt to explore recursive, musical situations that become mechanical and electrified. Therefore, the piece is exploring the resulting perceptual complexities and multiplicities related to distorted and exhausting phenomena of repetition and re/de-construction. “aux déBris” is a piece for flute, clarinet, piano, harp, violin, and cello and is written for and heartily dedicated to the Yann Robin and the members of the MULTILATéRALE ensemble.

The European fire-bellied toad is, in fact, a frog. (No fire, either.) However, this is more than compensated by its satisfyingly fun-to-say Latin name: Bombina bombina. They also produce antimicrobial peptides in their skin secretions – the even more fun-to-say ‘bombinins’. 

Native to eastern mainland Europe – recorded here in the protected land of Poland’s Barycz Valley Landscape Park – they use their internal vocal sacs to produce their “whoop” call: the mournful, slow-motion honk immortalized here. Imagine the sound that clowns might make when they cry and you won’t be far off.

A few days ago, we had some strong rainfall and I recorded its sound at the open bedroom window. I then created some chords and drones in with the Microfreak, drenched it all in some nice Valhalla reverbs, and here it is: A somber journey through the rain to end all rains.

VIIRGIILE - "The Third 25th Hour" (Out jun, 2023)

"Draw" and "blow" are terms used to refer to breathing in and out in harmonica playing. Zoetrope VI is centered around the breathing patterns of the harmonica player (in this case the percussionist). The piece follows the speed with which they inhale and exhale, gradually speeding up as more and more blemishes are added to the texture by the other instruments in the ensemble. Eventually, a spinning sound image briefly forms from the musical mass. 

The "Zoetrope" pieces mix together disparate elements in teeming masses to see if they can be made to sound as one. How does their coming together and falling apart enrich or erase the individual motifs' identities? And which of their qualities do the individual motifs end up contributing to the whole? The Zoetrope series is inspired by the pre-cinematic animation device the "Zoetrope" and emulates its achievement of cohesion through speed, varied imitation and repetition.

In the stillness of a Swedish forest, a solitary Mistle Thrush sings its melancholic tune. This recording captures the essence of the forest, a place where time seems to stand still and the beauty of nature can be fully appreciated.
