"Trailblazer" was composed as an homage to the influential women in my own life: women who held fast to their beliefs and values as they raised not only their children, but generations beyond.

To Alberto Nonoes: Fragments of Memory Falling is a dialogue between presence and absence,
between what once stood and what remains. Written for cello and piano, the
piece weaves fragments of melody and silence, evoking the echoes of spaces lost
to time. Though inspired by personal recollections of family and place, it
extends beyond a single story inviting the listener to reflect on the fragile
nature of memory, home, and the voices that linger even after walls have fallen.

A trio in one movement for guzheng, clarinet, and piano. It is based on old sketches for solo piano, and this is the inspiration for the name "scrimshaw": a process that involves the scraping of, usually, ivory in an artistic manner. The general impression of the piece is repetition within stasis--a dazed slumber.

Missing You

"Illuminations" explores a very traditional melodic structure against two modern concepts: 21st century tonal harmony (Mvt. 1) and modern rhythmic counterpoint (Mvt. 2). The piece as a whole depicts an interpretation of the idea of “pure music”, meaning music that is detached from external concepts or inspirations that are not music itself.

Dong-In Danny Choi (b. 1998) is a versatile young Canadian composer. Writing for various mediums including large ensemble concert works, chamber music, solo works, music for films and TV, and more, his music reflects a mix of lush Romantic-inspired language, film techniques, contemporary music, and a cocktail of influences from other genres.

He has collaborated with various professional ensembles including the Standing Wave, Erato, Nu:BC Ensembles, the NYU Contemporary Ensemble, the Vancouver and Victoria Symphony Orchestras, the UBC Symphonic Wind Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra, and NYU Orchestra. He is also the winner of the 2019 Howard Cable Memorial Prize in Composition.

​Largely self-taught in composition, orchestration, and various instruments (piano/keys, clarinet, guitar, drums, saxophone, and cello) starting at age 10, he is fluent in many different genres. His flexibility in classical, choral, jazz, rock, funk, pop, and contemporary church music genres allows him a wide array and palette in his work. He completed his BMus '20 in Composition at the University of British Columbia, where he studied with Jocelyn Morlock, Keith Hamel, Stephen Chatman, Pat Carrabre, and Dorothy Chang, and his MM ‘23 in Screen Scoring at New York University, where he received the Alan Menken Scholarship and studied with Eric Hachikian, John Kaefer, and Catherine Joy.

Choi hopes to be a composer who can connect emotionally with fellow musicians and his audiences in accessible ways and genres including through mediums such as film scores.
