Dam, stop what you're doing, take a min, this is a special one. For the past year Callum has helped me sway the nicest heads in the game to allow us all a peak at their most serious jams. Behind closed doors, I have had the pleasure of being let in on countless melters of his, of which he often kindly shares with you, over on youtube. 

Sadly, life, as it does, throws a curveball and practicality has meant he will no longer be on hand with Free Dots. I couldn't think of a more fitting way to conclude his journey than to have him lock down the 1 year anniversary show. 

Tear jerking and reminiscing aside, this is crazy hot - watch out!

INTERVIEW WITH FUJIS BAZAAR

Q: Thanks for your contribution to our mix series, how did you prepare for this mix, and how would you describe the result?

Thank you for the invitation! Normally I would prepare myself by grabbing my portable record player and heading to the bargain sections of my local stores. However, this time, Discogs and eBay were my go to. The outcome of this mix has clearly taken a reggae-pop and UK Soul turn. I find, with living in London, a lot of my finds are normally on a reggae tip, or sub-genres of it.

Q: Is there a record in the mix that you associate with a special story?

Most of the records I play in this mix are fairly new to my collection, so I’m yet to add special stories to each. But - there is one. Around the middle of the mix I play a record by Clive Brown - See U Cry. I purchased this one a little over a year ago, and I have regularly played it and received messages asking for IDs on it. There are three mixes on it, all of which are outstanding.

Q: Do you have a special digging process, or what kind of things arouse your interest in a record?

When digging I tend to look at dates, features, and label names. I am lucky enough that in most of my local stores there are listening decks, or the staff allow me to use my own. I always head to the bargain sections first, as you’re always likely to find unknown and untouched gems there..

Q: One record you will never let go, and one that doesn’t want to leave your wantlist?

Yukiko Haneda - Beating Mess. I was actually very very kindly given this record as a gift on my trip last year to Japan. I was in Takayama (my favourite place), and I decided to visit the only store there, and I was met by Yuki and Yoko of Obscuro. We chatted and I bought quite a few records from them and they also gifted me this record!
The record which still sits in my wantlist, five years later.. is another Japanese record, Makoto Matsushita - First Light. I should probably just go and buy the repress that has been put out in the last year.. durr!

Q: Music bonds people together. Any local heros/projects you would like to shout out? 

DJ/Producer Munir (Midnight Runners) & Ofri, owner of Norrm Radio! Ty running his 1BTN show, Through The Trees. Hampus and his NTS show, Doing Time. Tilly with her Noods and new NTS residency. Monty of Perth, AU, clearly doing bits in her hometown. Many many more to name. Keep doing what you’re doing!
