kjjabber is the garbled moniker of Jin Jing, multimedia artist and co-founder of Berlin-based collective AN(8)X. Pervaded by syncopated rhythms, dimensional changes, visceral sounds and soul-gripping melodic elements, her selections are often toying with unfathomable feelings and tensions. Like an infernal machine devoted to surpassing limits and mutates with each newly unveiled musical landscape, kjjabber reinforces layers of perception and plays with short attention spans behind the decks, constantly hinting at the beginnings of an enchanting climax that never arrives, to keep the listener under control and better drown them at will.

Rebecca Goldberg, a DJ and producer known for her work with Detroit Underground has kindly recorded a mix for our new series, championing local and global talent. We have asked her some questions about her experience as an artist and what her work involves. (Tracklist included below): 

Can you tell us more about the mix and what artists and sounds you wanted to highlight?

Podcasts and recorded mixes are a snapshot of my mood and what is in my "bag" at the moment. It's always going to be Detroit forward, the founders and foundation. I also like to include my new releases and stuff I'm working on and testing out; new stuff from the label (Detroit Underground).

How’s it going working with Detroit Underground as an A&R?

Kero @djkero [Detroit Underground's founder]  is a multimedia mastermind. It's been amazing to see the projects he gets into and his collabs with both the most renowned as well as underground artists. I have learned so much! I love the ever-evolving nature of DU as technology changes, it's a very tech-influenced label and collective. I am grateful to have shared the platform working with amazingly talented artists like Cyber Witch @cyberwitch, India Ivory @indiaivory and most recently, Yuri Suzuki. It's exciting to see where they let the work with the label take them.

It seems like being very involved in the  music community and talking to all sorts of people is very important to you..

I am a product of the internet age where instant connectivity is available at all times. The community part that goes beyond the music includes connecting the dots between mico scenes and similar minded people, gig trades, food, record shopping, culture exchange. Music is always at the center and the comminity is everything that goes with it related to the human connection.

Can you tell us about the contemporary scene in Detroit?

Parties are very much about the local scene. We have plenty of history around us at all times and direct contact with the originators to hold our own. Detroit is truly in a bubble of greatness, it's so special. Detroit DJs are just different! Local radio is thriving thanks to programming updates on WDET 101.9FM @wdetdetroit. Movement @movementdetroit is an annual homecoming of sorts where the city comes alive all weekend to celebrate, honor and show off what we work on all year. It's a great place to learn, grow and work.

Why do you think you are so drawn to music?

Dopamine, and I'm an introvert :)

The 76th vurt podcast features a 113-minute live set from Artefakt, the live techno duo from the Netherlands. 
This set by Artefakt was recorded live at Spread in Tokyo, on the 2nd of June 2023. This night was part of the Field Records ‘Floating World’ label tour celebrating their 15 year anniversary. The Tokyo events were co-organised by the Liminal Dreams collective.

세계적으로 잘 알려진 네덜란드의 라이브 테크노 듀오 Artefakt는 닉 라피엔(Nick Lapien)과 로빈 쿡(Robin Koek)의 최면적이고 주술적인 음악에 대한 공통된 애정을 기반으로 시작되었다. 듀오는 폭넓은 프레임-워크(frame-work)를 통해 음악이 연주되는 동안 소리의 질감과 톤을 미세하게 변화시켜 인간의 뇌가 몰입하고 호흡할 수 있는 최적의 분위기를 조성한다. 최근에는 즉흥적인 방식을 기반으로 정교하게 큐레이팅된 콜라보레이션 시리즈 De Stijl를 선보이며 창작의 경계를 확장하고 있다. Artefakt는 유럽, 북미, 아시아 전역에서 라이브 공연을 펼쳐왔으며, 아날로그 감성이 짙은 이들의 무대는 아름다운 선율과 깊은 감성의 테크노를 좋아하는 팬이라면 절대로 놓쳐서는 안될 최고의 공연이다.

At the root of Nick Lapien and Robin Koek’s Artefakt project is a shared love for melancholic, hypnotic voodoo music. Their sound is pensive with deep, rich textures; long track lengths—often six-minutes-plus—give the duo an expansive framework in which to make small changes of texture and tone, creating cerebral, balanced atmospheres that absorb and engage. “Sometimes we just take a short element, like the sound of a falling drop of water, and from this recording we extract the rhythm and use it as a starting point,” they say. “It’s a very organic way of creating new material.” 
After a period of self-reflection, the Dutch duo returned in 2019 to launch a label with a new EP. De Stijl serves as a platform for their musical explorations and those of their close friends. The imprint’s inaugural EP,  Far and Wide, a lesson in dancefloor-ready techno that prioritises mood and melancholy, preceded Monsoon, Artefakt’s second album, this time on Svreca’s mighty Semantica Records. Across eight tracks, the duo evidenced an intrinsic understanding of rhythmic structures, confirming their status as one of the most singular and emotionally evocative acts in contemporary techno. 
As a live act, Lapien and Koek have performed all across Europe, North America, and Asia, their analog-heavy set a must-see for fans of melodic and deeply emotive techno. Drawing on their shared love for collecting records, they also perform as DJs, crafting long, hypnotic narratives laced with exclusive material and records from the expensive collections, old and new. 
Having first crosses paths at university, Lapien and Koek began making music together in 2012. Lapien, whose infectious, swinging house cuts have featured on Rekids, Soul People Music, and DVS1’s Mistress, was just beginning his career as a solo artist; while Koek, who designs his own artistic systems and teaches at dBs Music Berlin, had just earned a Master of Arts from Utrecht's School of Arts, specializing in Sound Design and Composition. After releasing two EPs on the legendary Dutch imprint Delsin Records, in 2017 Koek and Lapien presented their debut album, Kinship, cementing their nuanced, atmospheric style while showcasing its breadth. It was the first big step in their ongoing pursuit to adopt techno as an art-form rather than a genre.

@Elinatapio: This set was performed at the crux of morning turning into day at, for which I layered introspective music and natural sounds into a powerful, growing soundscape to narrate a sense of transformation. – a sense which could be viscerally felt throughout zeroBPM’s meditation marathon. I hope whoever listens back to this recording can revisit those feelings present at the event and find a deep attention to the beauty of existence articulated within the music.
