Solid Steel in association with Serato (25th September) Our guest in Hour 1 needs little introduction, having documented DJ culture for many years through his writing and DJ History website, as well as being a well respected DJ. When asked for a few words, he wrote;

Never forget that DJing is entertainment. As much as us nerds and geeks love digging for new and oddball music, you’ve still got to entertain the crowd in front of you. Which, in this case happens to be you. Hello. How are you? 

Really? 
Me too. 

The advantage of entertaining you rather than a dancefloor is that I can afford to go off the chosen path occasionally and take a few diversions (it’s not that often, for example, you get the chance to play Yoko Ono without the threat of physical violence hovering somewhere in the foreground). Even so, it’s important – to me, at least – to offer something that dips its toes in between the dancing part of the job and the entertaining (pull up a chair, crack open the Diazepam). 

As in my most of my club sets, I try and balance between the brand new, new-to-me and ones pulled out of the festering mess where my records reside and combine them into a delightful musical soufflé. If you’re counting the calories, best wait a while before dipping into this. 

I’ve spent a decent chunk of this year compiling a series called Sources for Harmless (30 CDs in total… Phew), it’s brought a few old favourites up to the surface to get some air, so Clandestine’s ‘Radio Rhythms’ on Sleeping Bag is on here; arguably the nearest hip hop ever got to country & western. The opener is by Aax Donnell and Eric Malone and is one of those ridiculous and brilliant Italian records that I have a weakness for. Aax Donnell was also in Traks, who cut some great stuff in the early 80s. The Jill Scott song ‘Gimme’, I’ve been playing since it came out over ten years ago and never got bored of playing. There’s a whole raft of new stuff, some of which I got in the past week, some I’ve been playing over the summer. 

There are a few things on here you might not know, but equally there’s Fatima Yamaha, my favourite tune of the summer of 2015 (and yes, I’m aware it originally came out in 2004), to even things out and since there’s a new Prince album, a bit of that too (buy it, it’s surprisingly good).

Solid Steel in association with Serato (13th November) This week on Solid Steel we feature the recent Radio 1 Essential Mix from Coldcut and DK, minus the talking and available to download. As part of the Ninja Tune 25th Anniversary, Matt Black said "We wanted to represent as many of the current Ninja Tune roster as possible and also throw a couple of classics from the archives into the mix, in addition to some influential and inspirational tracks" 
We start with the brand new single from Roots Manuva, plus music from Ninja Tune artists Romare, Beat Spacek, Bonobo, Machinedrum, an unreleased track from Illum Sphere and 'Glassbeadgames' by Martyn and Four Tet, with classic tracks from The Bug, Squarepusher remix for DJ Food, DJ Vadim and cLOUDDEAD remixed by Boards of Canada. Meanwhile Dream Continuum grab a cheeky sample of Coldcut's People Hold On and we hear the Eddie Kendricks track that lyrically inspired said tune. All this plus New Yorks finest Arthur Russell, Konk, jeru and OC, footwork from DJ Spinn & Rashad featuring Danny Brown, Flying Lotus and spiritual jazz from The Prime Element.

The German House duo have released two albums so far on Delusions of Grandeur and a whole host of singles and remixes, with their last EP coming out on Retreat in September and a track is featured in the mix. Solid Steel in association with Serato (20th November) It's another epic Video Mix from Armtone in Hr 1. More bespoke visuals alongside original videos for a 90 minute AV mixtape. This time it's titled 'RΣmotions' and starts with Paul White's outing on R & S Records and into the excellent 'Cirrus' video by Cyriak for Bonobo. Then it's African flavours from Nigerian synth pioneer William Onyeabor, Owiny Sigoma Band and Clap! Clap!, before taking a darker route with Akkord, Dark Sky, Wen, Mumdance featuring Novelist, Addison Groove and classic Techno by Spacetime Continuum from 1996. Big Dada feature with a track from Wiley and Ninja Tune legend The Bug appears with the stunning video by Factory Fifteen for his track ‘Void', before taking it down with Kid Moxie & The Gaslamp Killer and Jokers of the Scene. "I've been listening to Solid Steel since I first started getting into clubs and electronic music, so it was a shock, and exciting for me, to get the offer to make one myself. 
I've decided to do a short selection of tracks I've been playing lately at clubs, going from Terrence Dixon to the legend Wally Badarou.
I wanted to leave some sections quite ambient as well, to give breathing space to it. The mix also contains some new work from me, some unreleased, and it starts with the track taken from my debut album. hope you enjoy "

FHUO Records or For Heaven Use Only (@forheavenuseonly-records) is a new record label founded by @Folamour, who is also a co-founder of the widely successful @Moonrise-Hill-Material and a very talented producer in his own right. The forthcoming first release is a various artist EP and is titled "L'Homme ne descend pas du singe mais du bruit” translated to Man didn’t descend from monkeys but from noise. The tagline on the Soundcloud page reads “no informations needed”, which we assume means let the music do the talking.

One of the four tracks on the EP is by fellow MHM co-founder Victor Dijoud aka @kaffecreme, who released Moonrise Hill Material’s highly sought after second record. “Baciami Subito” is proof again that the Lyon based producer and multi-instrumentalist is able to elegantly merge samples with his own sound to create something unique.

The release will be out in November, be sure to add this one to your collection as soon as its available!

The White Tapes EP of new @secretreels features three original tracks by Kian T (@kiantmusic) and a B side remix by Dutch wizard Daniel Leseman (@danielleseman), which we have the pleasure of premiering here today. 

Daniel takes the original, raw vibes of “Flughafen” and flips it on its feet into a clean-cut, sanguine affair. His signature warm chords and brassy synths are front and center, turning the spacey, atmospheric elements and twinkly keys taken from the original into complementary background pieces. A not too busy, club-oriented groove with hand drums, muted cowbells, crisp hats and jazzy rides gives the melodic elements room to breathe and helps solidify the track as one you’re sure to dance to in the near future.

@tlimshug is behind the wheel for BODO004 (@bobby-donny) and we have an exclusive preview of the A2 track, “Wig Split”. True to form, Tlim Shug sticks to the lo-fi sound that has made him one of the well known names in the now booming trend. A DJ Smokey sampled and looped hip-hop vocal with a simple yet contagious and haunting keyboard melody form the backbone of the track. Low-passed hats and claps paired with crushed toms and snares form the no-frills four on the floor beat while a beefy bassline drives the song.
