Elbows returns in 2021 with “Amnesia,” the first glimpse of his long-brewing debut album, ‘Tales From The Old Mill.’ The expansive body of work explores the concept of "home" as a place, a memory, and a desire, across music, video, and visual art. “Let’s journey back to 2013,” Elbows says of his latest single, “when I was wondering what to do with memories. Good memories gone bad, bad memories made worse. What exactly are you supposed to do with these things? At the time, I just wanted to forget them." 

The road to 'The Old Mill' began with a literal journey home, as a group of core-collaborators, including producer/engineer Alex Pyle (H.E.R.), drummer Dillon Treacy (Amber Mark, alto palo), and pianist DanMichael Reyes traveled with Elbows back to the Bay Area, where they'd record at Studio P, the home studio of his childhood neighbor, Joe Paulino. For Elbows, the Bay Area-born songwriter and producer, it was important that his friends and collaborators experience the physical places that inspired the songs and stories of the album. The benefits of this destination-recording manifested in the form of spontaneous synth patches, late-night woodland field recordings, and on "Amnesia," a spur of the moment frenetic snare pattern from drummer Dillon Treacy, inspired by being in the California for the first time. 

'Tales From The Old Mill' is due out fall 2021, when the first leaves change color, and you feel that first chill in the air.

Amnesia

The journey toward Elbows' debut album 'Tales From The Old Mill' continues with the new single "Seasons," his first release on EveryDejaVu Records!

A prominent theme of 'Tales From The Old Mill' is the search for "home" as a connection to another person, a romantic partner. "Seasons" is the finale of that narrative, looking at a failed relationship from a place of distance and accepting that something was not meant to be, rather than lamenting its failure.

"Back in 2013 I returned to the Bay Area, finally at the end of an on-again-off-again relationship," Elbows says of the latest single. "We tried for a few years to be together, season after season, but it never stuck. When I started writing 'Seasons' I thought each verse would tell the story of a different time when the relationship withered, first in winter, then spring, then summer. But once things were done for good, and I got time and distance from our eventual end, I recognized that it was the same story repeating over and over again, much like the seasons themselves. In that way it ended up being a much simpler song, story-wise."

'Tales From The Old Mill' is due out this October on EveryDejaVu.

The Night

"Tales from the Old Mill" is the titular centerpiece of Elbows' upcoming debut album, out October 27 on EveryDejaVu Records. A sprawling nine minute sonic journey about the search for home, debauchery in the middle class, and missing parents, "Tales" is a story told from two years, traveling from the night before the Super Bowl in 2008 to the present tense of the album, Christmas Eve 2013. The title track morphs across its runtime from an upbeat what-if-Funkadelic-made-a-James-Bond-theme-song funk song, to a nocturnal string quartet suite, and finishing as a leering, 808-filled folk song, with psychedelic reverse guitars screaming throughout the outro.

"The night we started recording 'Tales' in California is one of my favorite memories of making music," Elbows recalls. "At dusk we went down to Old Mill Park to see the looming, decrepit old mill, where I told my close friends/collaborators the stories behind this song, which were two of the more pivotal moments in my life. We drove back to the studio, over the hills and through the woods, and around midnight when we started recording, a connected, special feeling had come over us." 

The full 'Tales From The Old Mill' album is due out October 27.
