A Downside To The Upstairs

About a decade ago Mario Hernandez (of Ciao Bella & From Bubblegum To Sky) was casually sitting on a Stockholm couch drinking a really good cup of coffee when a friend put on the "Back To Mono" box set and Hernandez's life was forever changed. He was instantly drawn in by the excellent songwriting and lush instrumental arrangements; and what started out as an innocent side trip into the Phil Spector back catalog soon became a longtime fascination with the Brill Building and Spector's fabled wall of sound.

As time passed he realized that he just couldn't get away from it. He kept coming back to the idea of a simple pop song that wasn't really that simple – a happy melody with a dark underpinning in the lyric– and he knew that it wasn't enough to just listen. He had to make his own version of this great sounding stuff. Kids On a Crime Spree is the result of this obsession.

After living in New York for a spell to more fully immerse himself in the culture that spawned the music he loved, Hernandez moved back to California and began recording in earnest. Of the more than one hundred songs he composed but was not able to record while in New York, eight of the best were chosen for "We Love You So Bad," Kids On a Crime Spree's first record. Much care was taken to use older recording techniques akin to those used in the sixties in the Brill Building and the whole record was recorded on analog tape.

As recording progressed Hernandez brought in friends to help record and to recreate his songs in a live setting. Things came together quickly since they had all played together in the past and before long they had mastered they songs and were ready to play out. Key to the Kids On A Crime Spree sound is the simple yet driving drumming of Becky Barron (of #Poundsign#, Scrabbel & From Bubblegum To Sky), and the perpetually drenched in reverb guitar of Bill Evans (of From Bubblegum To Sky). From the punchy power-pop of "I Don't Wanna Call You Baby, Baby" to the classic 70s handclap-driven glam-pop of "Sweet Tooth" and the Ramones-y "To Mess With Dynamite," "We Love You So Bad" shows Hernandez and Kids On a Crime Spree's mastery of pop history and distinctive song-writing chops. "Jean-Paul Sartre 2" wraps the EP up in fine fashion, a feedback-drenched gem with a riff that most bands would just kill for. It's a perfect way to end this great debut release and points the way forward to what we hope is a lot more great pop from Mario, Becky and Bill.

The second single from critically acclaimed album ‘Rest And Be Thankful’ is an old school double A - ‘Broken Glass’ and brand new track ‘Bones’ featuring the lo-fi traditional skronk of young upstarts JR Green.

"Bones" was written one wintery morning from the window of Inver Cottage, an old fisherman’s croft on the shores of Loch Fyne, and two weeks ago Linden - Joe, Marco, Eric and Stuart - went to The Barne Studio with the wonderful JR Green, rehearsed, recorded and mixed the track on the same day… old skool! The day was beautifully captured by film-maker and Young Bafta winner Iain Henderson.

Linden play Celtic Connections 27th January at Oran Mor Glasgow and The Trades Club Hebden Bridge 31st January.

There will also be a live BBC Janice Forsyth Culture Show Session with Linden and Jr Green on 20th January.

Ian Ruhala, better known as HALA, has been writing and recording music for several years now and at the
young age of 18, he is already a singer/songwriter veteran.
 
With several releases already under his belt, even before graduating high school, Ruhala has created some
buzz with his solo, at-home/DIY recording style that relates well with music from artists like M. Ward,
Mac DeMarco and Travis Bretzer.
 
After attending college at Central Michigan University for a semester, Ruhala’s mind was more on lyrics than
on school-work. Writing over sixty songs during this time period, Ian decided to fully immerse himself into his passion to manufacture his first proper debut, Spoonfed.
 
The meaning behind Spoonfed, as Ruhala explains, is about dealing with the things and ideas that people feed you when you are young, and trying to do your best to not repeat the norm. Songs like “Phone Calls,” and
“Not Your Modern Man” discuss topics like marrying young, and society’s fear of face-to-face interaction
with each other, with lyrics that you will be surprised to find out, came from an 18 year old kid from Michigan.
 
Every song on this album tells a story; heart-break is talked about in the ironically upbeat song “Reruns,” and the track “Just Because,” shows HALA’s appreciation for the simple things in life, with the line, “Sunday morning, Dad’s at home, watches football and paints his toes, will I ever be?” One thing is for sure, it is extremely refreshing to see someone so young be able to produce something of this magnitude; Ruhala’s future is bright.
 
Get your bowls, and a spoon, because this Indie singer/songwriter says, "breakfast is served."

It was surprising-gratifying last decade, when Lincoln, Nebraska stalwarts For Against finally garnered the cult popularity they’d long deserved—at least in Europe, where generous, rapturous crowds hailed them as “darkwave” pioneers. Back home, though, it took this era’s shoegaze explosion/revival to bring them equal underground acclaim, accelerated by Captured Tracks’ 2014 Box Set, compiling their two LPs and EP, 1987-1989. It even received a 7.8 in Pitchfork, suggesting, “If they had gained a tenth of the attention Interpol attracted, it would have been a wonderful world!” 

That richly deserved, delayed recognition is bound to heighten with these reissues of their three ’90s records.

For Against - Don't Do Me Any Favors

Brooklyn's Jeanines specialize in ultra-short bursts of energetic but melancholy minor-key pop. With influences that run deep into the most crucial tributaries of DIY pop — Messthethics, the Television Personalities, Marine Girls, early Pastels, Dolly Mixture — they've crafted a style that is as individual as it is just plain pleasurable. Alicia Jeanine's pure, unaffected voice muses wistfully on the illusions of time, while My Teenage Stride/Mick Trouble mastermind Jed Smith's frantic Motown-esque drumming and inventive bass playing provide a thrilling rhythmic foundation.

"Winter In The Dark" and a lovely, jaunty cover of The Siddeleys' "Falling Off Of My Feet Again" provide great insight into what Jeanines are about. 60s-meet-80s melodies combine with timeless guitar jangle in a way that recalls everything from The Aislers Set and Saturday Looks Good To Me to more recent DIY pop groups like Parsnip and Chook Race. Album opener "Either Way," "Hits The Bone" and "Where We Go" hearken back to some of the most intriguing bands of the C86/C88 era, when bands like Jesse Garon & The Desperadoes crafted perfect pop gems enlivened by the inspiration of punk.

Gorgeous songs like "Where I Stand," "Too Late" and "In This House" are windows into Alicia's lyrical style and inspiration. She expands: "I'm kind of obsessed with mortality and how weird the passage of time is so I think my lyrics reflect that. I definitely lean into that kind of melancholy state of mind when trying to think of lyrics, while trying to avoid cliches!" The marriage of the minor-key melodies and melancholic lyrics is powerful and make Alicia's songs all the more memorable, especially so on songs like "No Home," with its echoes of girl harmony post-punk groups like Grass Widow and Household.

Clearly, with 16 great songs included, there is a lot at work here on this standout debut album. Jeanines have been compared to such cult pop icons as Dear Nora, Black Tambourine, and more recent acts like Veronica Falls and Girl Ray, but their dark, modal melodies and pensive, philosophical lyrics, along with Smith's versatile but ever-economical musicality, ensure them a place of their own in today's crowded but boisterously healthy DIY pop scene.

VON KONOW is all about contradictions. A synthesis of different, even conflicting, musical styles and identities, the new solo act by singer and songwriter Marko von Konow combines fresh pop melodies with orchestral instrumentation alongside glam sounds and rough beats. Von Konow’s vocal presence is powerful and engaging, inspired not only by the various styles of music but by theatre, cabaret and film as well. He invites his listeners to embark on a journey to lucid atmospheres and distant places. His songs tell about the survival of exposed souls in harsh borderlands and battles between light and shadows.

The main goal is to create new musical spaces by combining the power of rock and pop with the playfulness of art music and film. The synthetic result gives musical form to various marginal figures, from fearless travelers to startling aliens and disdained criminals. The themes of love and death combine with a delicate social critique that targets our contemporary life destined for normalization and unity. von Konow does not preach any truth or doctrine; his music opens up an alternative space in which the outcasts and the forgotten are free to breathe, feel and think. If there is a message in these songs, then they proclaim that marginality does not condemn us to death but provides a freedom in which new identities and new natures become possible.

Von Konow’s synthetic approach has deep roots in European art and philosophy. Its first initiators were Friedrich Nietzsche, Jean Genet ja Jean-Paul Sartre who all urged us to abandon familiar worlds and to experiment with new forms of life. In the 20th and 21st centuries, marginal figures have been developed most freely in pop culture and music, where the best-known contributors are David Bowie, Freddie Mercury and Lady Gaga. von Konow’s music draws from these sources and aims primarily at creating a multidimensional musical space in which the audience can create their own identities. In addition to Bowie, von Konow’s inspiration comes from Kate Bush, Nick Cave, Depeche Mode, Rick Wakeman, Florence and the Machine and Owen Pallett.
