Generating “the soundtrack to culture clash,” Chris Zurich’s music is an accurate representation of his impassioned mission statement, “creating a sound that doesn’t exclude highlights from any genre, a fusion that is designed to connect people or groups that wouldn’t naturally collide.”

Immersed in a hardcore upbringing, Chris began to notice the value of the brief – but often unrealized – melodic instincts that have gone largely unexplored outside the genre. Inspired by this, Chris began to mine this idea and see if he could base entire songs upon these moody and melodic leanings.

Inspired by the classic soul voices of artists like Stevie Wonder, Chris began studying opera with a former opera star who sought to impart his knowledge, after his own career had faltered. Under his tutelage, Chris was finally able to set his vision in motion, pairing the soulful vocals with the melodic instincts under-exploited in hardcore.

Black Ink, tastefully marries prog rock and ripe soul, tearing down typecasts of the indie mold. Alternating between melancholy moods and entrancing electronica, the record has an ornate lulling effect, gracefully snapping listeners back from hypnosis with his commanding, and most basic instrument, his lauded voice.

Loyal to all parts of the production process, Chris named the album Black Ink, a reference to the defensive ink a squid produces when it’s under siege, and since this is Chris Zurich’s debut release, the imagery is a metaphor for the exposition and struggle of willfully revealing aspects of yourself to those around you for the first time.

His equality-focused Quaker upbringing paired with parenting by an ethics professor deemed “one of the most dangerous minds in America,” quickly forged radical ideals and world conscious perception found in the themes of his encrypted lyrics on Black Ink. Chris’s expansive mind and “open door policy” of human connection has complemented his art both musically and conceptually, delivering a new kind of artist to the musical landscape, an inclusionary one.

BAMBARA is a storm. Recalling the brooding filth of early Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds and Swans and the pummeling energy of Jesus Lizard or Iceage, BAMBARA uses their signature vocal-noise collages to create an unsettling, visceral experience.

Although BAMBARA only formed in Athens, Ga in late 2008, the three boys have grown up together. Twin brothers Reid and Blaze Bateh (25) and childhood friend William Brookshire (25) have been consistently making music and playing shows together since they were in the 7th grade. Now the band is in Brooklyn, and they are ready to release DREAMVIOLENCE.

DREAMVIOLENCE is BAMBARA’s long awaited full-length follow-up to their acclaimed debut EP Dog Ear Days (2010). After playing countless deafening shows in their hometown of Athens, touring the US in sweaty house shows and sharing bills with Grimes, Liturgy, A Place to Bury Strangers, and Parts and Labor, BAMBARA decided to leave their beloved Athens and move to a basement apartment in Bushwick, Brooklyn for a change. Here they practiced, slept and recorded for the majority of 2012. Following the release of a Kate Bush cover and a 10 minute improv noise EP RINGS early in the year, BAMBARA began to work on DREAMVIOLENCE.

With a minimal recording set-up and little sunlight, the band was able to completely capture the dark, grimy, noisy sound they are known for while maintaining the lush beauty that glues it all together. Reid’s voice croons and snarls the fragmented images of the city. Blaze and William’s driving rhythm section plows and swings through the dirge of vocal noise with furious power. BAMBARA doesn’t want you to get comfortable in DREAMVIOLENCE. They prefer to send you through vortexes of haunting noise before you reach the dreamy euphoria waiting in the wreckage.

DREAMVIOLENCE will be released on the band’s own tape label Emerald Weapon Records that they use to put out their music, video projects and Reid’s solo noise project FEVERER. The album art features a still from the 1999 Leos Carax film POLA X.

“I received a pre-release copy of the album a few weeks ago and was shocked by how the band, which could have easily traded on its deft knowledge of pop hooks and rock sensibility, chose instead to dive off the deep end into experimental murkiness and past-the-reef darkness. This is the soundtrack to the aftermath of an avalanche. Or a ship sunk long ago. The 13 tracks were recorded in the band’s New York basement, but carry all the desolation of a rural Wisconsin snowdrift. Yes. It’s that good.” – Flagpole

After spending time as a musician in both Nashville and New York, Kait Lawson returned to her hometown of Memphis, Tennessee to record her debut album, Until We Drown. The songs on the album, all written by Lawson, were backed by some of the city’s best musicians. With a core group consisting of George Sluppick on drums (Chris Robinson Band, JJ Grey and Mofro), Steve Selvidge on guitar (The Hold Steady, Big Ass Truck), Dave Cousar on guitar (Al Green, Amy Lavere), Al Gamble on keys (Mark Broussard, City Champs), and Sam Shoup on bass (Ringo Starr, John Legend), Lawson, indeed, had full access to the Bluff City’s historic and eclectic sound.

Kait’s uncompromising songwriting takes a wry, yet deeply personal look at broken homes and fractured relationships. She takes full responsibility when appropriate, but there is plenty of blame to go around. Lyrically, no one walks away unscathed, but the music both lifts and soothes, providing a thoroughly enjoyable and ironic landing place for the listener. The songs are haunted by Guthrie and Kerouac while remaining rooted in the Southern landscape. Muddy Waters of Mississippi, home in Tennessee, regretful cigarettes, midtown Memphis, squandered youth, temporal angels, perfume from the graveyard, goodbyes and the lies of Judas.

It’s all here…the virginal and profane, the kiss-off and the yearning, the blues and the hope. Can a drowning both kill and redeem? In Kait Lawson’s world, it most assuredly can.
