“Cinema is never on time,” wrote the great critic Serge Daney. That statement never seemed to apply to Jean-Luc Godard, an auteur who was always of his time and ahead of it—a relentless interrogator of the present who also sought the horizons of a new future.

This week, as we mourn the recent passing of one of our greatest artists, Film Comment Co-Deputy Editors Devika Girish and Clinton Krute invited two critics and Godard experts for a talk about the filmmaker’s life and career. Richard Brody writes about movies for The New Yorker and is the author of the must-read Godard biography, Everything Is Cinema, and Blair McClendon is a film editor, regular Film Comment contributor, and author of a beautiful remembrance of Godard published by n+1.

The four discussed Godard’s vast and protean filmography, from foundational works like Breathless and La Chinoise to masterful essay films like Goodbye to Language and The Image Book, and the ways in which Godard’s films awakened them, in their formative cinephilic years, to the aesthetic and political potentialities of cinema.

Peter Kvidera is Minneapolis, US based artist Peter Kvidera, who has previously released albums on Aether Sound, as well as creating material for Triplicate Records and contributing a track for Jogging House’s ‘A Compilation For Oceana’ in 2021. After dedicating time in childhood making music with trumpet and guitar, Peter progressed into manipulating electronic sounds in high school and he has been doing it ever since. His work now is typically born through experimenting with new techniques, instruments and processes; throwing spaghetti at the wall to see what sticks.

For ‘Verism’, a liminal sleep sound became the hook, as a fuzzy form of minimalism sprawled across 9 hazy tracks. A simple loop-based approach was adopted, gathering sampled instruments and field recordings and funneling them through software utilities. Peter was interested in exploring the line between music and sound, questioning what makes a group of sounds take the step into becoming music versus an audio collage of gathered sounds. He experimented with manipulating the timbre of instruments and other audio, to explore the tipping points of whether their original source is still traceable.

It is Peter’s hope that this work of obscured sounds and textures falls just over the line, into musical territory.

Even though "Mesh" can be performed as a stand-alone composition, it was premiered as part of the evening-length project "Der Wanderer 2.0" which I developed together with the Nadar Ensemble in 2023. In the version presented in the context of this project, the audience is wearing headphones on which part of the soundtrack and amplification is played back, while other parts of the soundtrack and amplification are heard through the loud speakers on stage. This splitting allowed for an extensive manipulation of sonic depth, nearness, distance, foreground, background, blanketing and uncovering. The audience was encouraged to play with the headphones, taking them on and off freely, listening to only one ear, etc., creating their own listening experience.
Of course none of this can be replicatd on this live-recording, in which the soundtrack is rendered to stereo.
