Our next mixtape comes courtesy of Puglia born London based Niche founder, 	𝐈𝐤ä𝐯ä 𝐏𝐢𝐢.

A high energy hour of weird swampy sounds, eery melodies & intricate detail, put together with so much love and care it feels like one full track.

𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐮𝐬 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐢𝐱
Weirdness and detail. This is all I want as a listener and a dancer, and what I want to convey as Ikävä Pii. In this mix I’ve explored slowfast ambiguity, music for ponds and futuristic punk, pairing Italian Sunitty with warped UK techno, with a couple of WTF turns.

For the most part, it is extremely detailed music. It’s abstract and rich. I don’t like the definition of “sound design” anymore: it sounds “functional”, as if the goal was creating a product. These producers are (like me), instead, trying to spawn detailed worlds.

I’ve started making music with a punk band in Puglia. I picked up a guitar because my father and all his brothers played. Family gatherings were beautifully loud. Puglia was still a poor and tough place when I was a kid, so my love for international music was a form of escapism. I was (like many others) online a lot and in touch with musicians from all over the world. I started dreaming of London listening to The Clash at maybe 12yo? London has truly shaped me, I was radicalised here. Politically and artistically. And here’s where I embraced my queerness.

I think, in many instances, it was here that I was exposed to some really fringe stuff, and that’s how I realised I loved everything that was genuinely weird or boundaries-pushing. Furthermore, I believe that Hackney Wick makes my life as an artist easier. Cheap rent, community and proximity: it’s a 5 mins walk from the warehouse to the studio and the venue, and sometimes special things only happen thanks to the support of other locals. You know who you are! <3

𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐮𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐡𝐞, 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 & 𝐰𝐡𝐲 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 & 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧?
Niche started in April 2023 as a monthly sonic hangout; noisy jams, open decks, and improvised sets. Now it’s a full-scale event, with performances by some of the best artists we know. It started out of necessity: an accessible space to experiment with fellow noisemakers. 
My relationship with the venue was crucial; I’ve been a resident at The Bath House for 2 years now, and Niche can only happen because my studio is there.

It is a lovely ecosystem of musicians, DJs, listeners and dwellers. We are trying to bridge the gap between the bedroom and the venue, offering a space for people to try new things out and take risks, playing for the most understanding audience. In terms of curation, I am looking for the most daring acts out there - no genre limitations, but definitely priority to live shows, and musicians in particular. 
Alongside artists I know and/or follow, we met incredibly talented people through the open calls, or other nice folks who just jumped on the groupchat and asked to play! Keeping it as open and diverse as possible is at the core of our practice. We only have one resident at the moment - the amazing Queenie.

Micaela Casella, aka E L A, is an Argentinian DJ based in Milan who began her musical journey in 2011 in Córdoba, Argentina. Returning to Buenos Aires, she deepened her connection with Techno through the “Arjaus” School of Electronic Music, where she honed her technical and production skills. Her sound is defined by ambient soundscapes and subtle grooves, filled with psychedelic nuances that create innovative atmospheres, hypnotic rhythms, and seamless transitions.

Box5ive, a London-based DJ, live performer, and film composer, released his debut LP in June 2024 on @coclear_ and has also featured on labels like Well Street, Comic Sans Records, Initiate, and Panel Audio. His music spans UK techno, ambient, IDM, and cinematic, bass-heavy dub, blending experimental and atmospheric sounds to create a unique sonic landscape.

An early Sunday morning club session from Seb H. recorded live from Laak in The Hague. 

Originally hailing from Essex, Seb H. moved to Amsterdam shortly before the implications of Brexit were put in place, living there for two years before moving to Rotterdam, where he still resides. Quickly becoming immersed in the historic local scene, Seb H. has been volunteering at the local radio station Operator since 2021 where he has met lots of inspiring and creative people as well as hosting the station’s in-house radio show, Culture Radio. Documenting the cultural landscape of Rotterdam alongside his co-host Cara, the show shines a spotlight on the city’s music scene and beyond, inviting individuals who are involved with the city’s cultural events/organisations, speaking to them about their experiences, their motivations, the challenges they face and so on. Seb also hosts his own show on the station, Can’t Mix FM, which has been running for just over a year now. More free flowing and a good showcase of the kind of sounds Seb is into, the show also offers one-off artist spotlights such as a recent Shackleton special. As a DJ, his mixes and sets often lean towards the dubby, bassy side of electronic music, whether that’s more techno-leaning or more wonked-out, trippy half time / drum & bass numbers. I managed to catch Seb close out a kinetic party earlier this year and honestly felt like he peered into my soul with what I wanted to listen to at that time; lots of spacey, atmospheric jungle and drum & bass, so I’m super happy to be hosting this live recording on 909 today!
