"Hello, friends! Greetings from Kyiv, Ukraine. These 3 tracks were written in Ukraine during full-scale invasion between 2022 and 2023. They represent different vibe and tempo (as well as my other releases on YUKU) but they show my understanding of electronic music. I was inspired by my favorite artists and labels such as Astrophonica, Metalheads and YUKU for sure.

Ulterior Tune - is the backlash to the track of Ulterior Motive’s “Elephant Tune”. I hope you can guess what element from their track I hide. “Unity” is my reinterpretation of DnB tracks from my childhood. “Ash” - the track was inspired by Ténèbre’s album “Terraform” released on YUKU but it has radically different atmosphere. It's funny that at the time of writing it seemed to me that the sound was copied. “Ash” is my personal favorite for this release: as you may know I’m obsessed with old sci-fi movies, so I hope you’ll understand the origin of the main sample here.

It was so important for me to involve a Kyiv-based artist Slava Kryzhanovski for the artwork. Slava has his own visual style that I like & it’s perfectly matching the sound of whole release - rude, uncouth, but beautiful.

Label Mix 012 comes from @slagwerk, a vanguard of the new digital experimental music landscape. Founded by Otis Dehaes in 2017, this Brussels-based label and event series represents a fusion of love, dedication, and an uncanny knack for discovering and nurturing underground talent, while embracing an ever-evolving digital ethos.

Otis’s ear has taken Slagwerk 18 releases deep, cementing the label as a hub for experimental music that’s so delightful to listen to, the term “experimental” almost feels wrong, but it isn’t. “Some people might hear some consistency in the output, but I have not necessarily intended it that way,” Otis told Nina. 

Releases from artists like Money Lang, Color Plus, Ange Halliwell, Dasychira, and many more have cemented Slagwerk as a destination for internet music heads looking for a fix of strange, warm, and beautiful music that defies easy categorization. Otis said his Nina label mix “recaps the label’s different emotions throughout the years.”

Know V.A.: Hibernation (Knives)

Knives follow this Summer’s Kuedo OST release with an upfront club tool EP from DJ / producer duo, Know V.A. 

'Hibernation' traces ecstatic elements from the hard dance music familiar to their formative experience growing up in Holland, and fuses them with more UK leaning frameworks of late 90s techstep and late 00s vaporous grime, forming an ode to the romantic nostalgia of a shared club experience. Across the 5 tracks on 'Hibernation', Know V.A. set baroque string and choral arrangements into orbit around a hypnotic meandering of fierce gabber stabs and chattering percussion - at once reminiscent of both devine, classical ceremony and flailing club experience, drenched in sweat.

Know V.A. have performed internationally for a range of promoters and venues, such as Boiler Room and Stedelijk Museum. They curate the event and club night ‘Strange Days’, which seeks to showcase contemporary hardcore experimentalism and explore how the genre, sonically and visually has remained active in the underground. Their soundtrack work includes music for Calvin Klein and the acclaimed hardcore documentary 'Thunderdome Never Dies'. 

A collaborative artwork for the project is provided in the form of an emblem designed by artist Nicholas Law, subsequently animated by Winston Duke.

The EP will be closely followed by an additional release of remixed tracks, provided by UCC Harlo, Exploited Body & Sully. 

As of 2020 Knives is an independent project, now separate from any parent label.

Hibernation 

Know V.A. - Dirt

Hidden Element is electronic act from Kyiv, Ukraine. By blending elements of breakbeat, techno and ambient, producer Igor Kirilenko creates forward-thinking music with shifty rhythms, cinematic samples and deep textures. Inspired by classic sci-fi movies, it’s a perfect soundtrack both for crowded ecstatic club nights and solitary mind-wandering.

Igor began releasing tracks as Hidden Element in 2011, firstly as a duo with Nil Tarasov, and now as a solo project. Over the years he released music on various labels including Med School, Pinecone Moonshine, Alphacut, Silent Season, YUKU. 

Project’s track “I See The Light” (feat. Kiyomi Yamashita) was noted by DJ Mag as “Track of the Month”. Track “Reload, Replay” was played by Steve Lamacq on BBC1Xtra. Debut LP “Together” released on Absys Records in 2016 received a number of positive reviews and warm feedback from El Hornet (Pendulum), Ulrich Schnauss and other producers. 

Hidden Element also created official remixes for a variety of artists, from British drum’n’bass legend London Elektricity to Ukrainian pop-singer and Eurovision winner Jamala.

In 2020–2021 Hidden Element manifested a new ambitious chapter with EP trilogy “Comparisons” / “Kontinuum” / “Cycles”. Packed with intense contemporary breakbeat and seasoned with high class remixes from Throwing Snow, Andre Bratten, Prayer, Cocktail Party Effect, these EPs earned praise from Mixmag Japan, Mixmag UK, Mixmag Brazil, BARKS, Qetic, Inverted Audio etc. A bunch of tracks from the trilogy was also aired on BBC Radio 1 in numerous guest mixes.
