(Founder of Drop DJ Joel Lai is a legend in Hong Kong, where he is widely regarded as the territory’s number one DJ and premier house music pioneer.) 
Hong Kong born Joel Lai started to learning mixing with 2 cassette decks, 1 pencil & a mixer in 1985, began DJing in the territories night-clubs and dance events since 1987. he was the first to bring the Dance Events Culture & The underground sounds of the UK & US to Hong Kong. Since then he has continued to embrace all that the international arena has to offer and continue to mold the Hong Kong market, turning this former colony into one of the most progressive and exciting dance scene in Asia.
As Paul Oakenfold said at the time of the Unity party to mark Hong Kong’s handover to Chinese sovereignty in 1997, “Joel Lai can hold his own with the European DJ’s”*. He has played alongside the biggest names in the industry and continues to tour though-out Asia and Europe in major venues such as the Ministry of Sound (UK), Heaven (UK), Lulu in Germany, Singapore’s Zouk and Tokyo’s Loop – to name a few.
In Hong Kong Clubbing history Joel is the only HK DJ repeatedly voted Hong Kong’s No. 1 DJ by the local music press (Absolute Magazine)& (HK Magazine), Joel Lai is well known for drawing large crowds based on his name alone. Hong Kong clubbers have often walked away from some of the bigger club night’s wondering if Joel’s seamless and inspired set has out-shone the intended guest DJ’s. On more than a few occasions sweating faces have beamed through flashing light’s and peered over to the DJ booth surprised to discover Joel Lai commanding the decks rather than the featured DJ. Name almost any top U.S or European DJ who has toured globally in the past few years and chances are Joel has played along side them as the supporting local DJ. The list is long and illustrious – Simon Dunmore,  Norman Jay, Carl Cox, Sasha, John Digweed, Paul Oakenfold, Lee Burridge, Little Louie Vega, Danny Krivit, Franscoi K, and Dimitri from Paris to name a few.
1999 saw the release of Joel’s first mixed CD. “Club 1997 The Definitive Music” was named after the famed Hong Kong night-club for which Joel was resident DJ and released under the Polygram label. It paved the way as Hong Kong’s first locally produced dance music compilation and won applause from the local media. “One cannot help wondering… why someone who never ventures into this oft-cited exclusive night-club would buy a Club 1997 CD? For Hong Kong underground dance hounds, the answer would be: because Joel Lai did it” said a feature in the South China Morning Post.
In recent years Joel has continued to exert his influence on the local dance and club scene. In his quest to provide Hong Kong clubbers with a new experience, in 2000 Joel opened the famous club Drop, helping to re-define Hong Kong nightlife. As drop’s resident DJ, Joel continues to stay abreast of everything new and fresh opting  from a “Backroom Set of Soul, Funk, Latin, 70’s Disco Classic House Anthem to a “Mainroom Set of Organic House, Afro House, Deep Melodic House and Techno, ” As further testament to Joel’s un-paralleled sound and vision, Drop was voted HK Magazine Readers Choice Awards “Best Club” in 2002.

A purist in form, sekio delivers raw unadulterated techno. His productions, characterised by ethereal textures with influences from his native country of Japan, are woven into his sets to create a seamless and hypnotic flow.

As a part of the SingleServingSound collective, he hosts a radio station with his cohost SixYearOldGenius.
