Born in London Paul started out in the late 80’s as a club DJ, then record shop manager, then producer.
 
Since those early Dj gigs, Paul’s underlying motivation has and always will be the music; ambient, hip hop, breakbeat, soul, funk, dub, boogie, electro and Detroit techno: urban music with deep roots, social conscience and soul.
 
His live sets are powered by modular synthesis, analog drum machines, effects pedals and bass; dub techno meets electro meets ambient meets Hierophant.

Today we have the absolute honour to have one of the all-time greats strengthening our podcast roster; Carl is one of those enduring producers who pops up all over the history of UK house and electro from the early ‘90s onward. He collaborated often in his early career, most famously making house music with our January guest Ralph Lawson, releasing his music at labels like 20:20 Vision, Fundamental Records, Craigie Knowes & plenty more throughout his career. 

  It is his urge for 808’s starting in ’96, that got everybody’s attention.  As Voice Stealer, Carl innovated what electro could be, bending the fleet-footed percussion of electro around experimental sounds and samples on the 1997 album The All Electric House and 1998’s Electromotive Force EP, both for Subvert. Together with Daz Quayle he formed IL.EK.TRO in 1998, which yielded two boundary-pushing and entertaining EPs for Klang Elektronik and a more damaged version of their sound in 2004 for Modern Love.   

Yet his most prolific electro project (in our most humble opinion) is Silicon Scally, which has come out with seven albums and two dozen EPs worth of extremely diverse electro music released on Cultivated Electronics, CPU & Electrix Records. 

  This live-set is what we would have gotten from his planned touring last year, and it is everything you thought it would be! We want to point out his Facebook page as he is educating the new generation about music production, technology, his weapons of choice(mainly coffee ;-) ) as well as just being a dope and genuine place to be! So for now…

Dexorcist was brought up on 80's Electro, Hip Hop and Miami Bass, graduating to Acid House, Bleeps, Techno and beyond. 

Heavily influenced by the legendary RIP parties at Clink street and other warehouse events around London's then shady east end wastelands.

During the early 90's he helped form the excellently named Fear Teachers sound system, which morphed through various incarnations including KDU, before ending up as the also brilliantly named Dead Silence Syndicate. 

An Electro producer with a long string of quality releases and remixes on labels such as Battle Trax, SMB, Fuel, not forgetting the label he co-ran with Keith Tenniswood; Control Tower. 

Some up and coming releases on Yellow Machines, Super Rhythm Trax, Libertine, M.U.S.A, Further Electronix & Cyber Domain.

Matthias Zimmermann is a Berlin-based producer whose debut album was released in 2016 on Back Office Records and Sound Pellegrino.

To describe Matthias Zimmermann's music is to risk imposing limits on his music, although he goes beyond them by weaving universes as rich as his musical training, from hip hop to techno, and even jungle. If the Berlin producer sometimes allows himself targeted escapades, like his house productions under the alias Joe Cleen, or his EP Momentum Series pt. I, purposefully created for techno sets, he generally strives for mix genres to create a musical mosaic of his own.

His eponymous debut album invited us to an imaginary island where each track is a character with a very special personality. This project with multiple facets, from ambient to tribal music and jazz, plunges us into a house tinged with pop by mixing field recording and mechanical sounds.

Conceiving music as an initiatory journey, Matthias Zimmermann is not done making his audience explore new dimensions. His new EP, Kontakt, released on May 14th can only confirm it. Through four tracks, the Berlin producer invites us in his melodious peregrinations where keyboards, samples and synthesizers come together.

Ivna Ji and Parallel go a long way back. 

Having "met" on Soundcloud, back in the days when the platform was not yet oversaturated, and a few times in real life in Berlin, we kind of lost touch over the years. 

It was only since noticing Ivna releasing now on the Belgium label @zwaartekrachtrecords (check Parallel Voyager 027 by Zwaartekrachts founder @arsonistrecorder!) we started talking again regularly. 

Ivna is a Zagreb based long time DJ and producer, recently releasing one electro banger after the other. 

Until we will catch her playing in Berlin again (hopefully soon), she´ll mesmerize us with an amazing twisted one hour trip full of broken club tracks mingled up with moody vocals and atmospheric synths. One hour of bass music and funky darkish electro experiments, we hope you will love it as much as we do! On repeat!

A life-long devotee of electronic and experimental music, Karl P. Meier discovered Chicago House and Detroit Techno in the early nineties, and the rest, as they say, is boring.

Determined to prove that dance music could be serious artform, and more than just escapist fare, he developed a djing style (opening for artists such as Surgeon, Monolake, and Jeff Mills) that looks to the future while being influenced by the music of the past, exploring the grey area between the physical and the cerebral and focusing on dynamism, subversion, and recontextualization. 

Karl's most current release, a collaboration with Jonathan "Stave" Krohn under the name Talker, is out now on Downwards.

The Bunker Podcast 87 - Karl Meier

The idea of getting a mix from Karl Meier stemmed from the recent feature on his partner in Downwards act Jonathan Krohn. Speaking with Nic Touhey, Krohn said Meier was the friend that would drop into his basement when he and his friends were listening to music saying something like: “you gotta check this out". Add to this, Meier's two decades experience of DJing in the US and it made us think getting a mix from him would be an interesting exercise. Luckily for us Meier was open to the idea but we were not quite prepared for what the Chicago selector ended up submitting.

Clocking in at just under three hours and featuring over 70 tracks, Meier's podcast is a masterclass in mixing that features a wide range of music past and present. As Meier tells us matter of factly, "I can't see the point in playing three hours of any one style, period." Prior to working with Krohn as Talker, Meier's most recognised contribution to the techno canon was one of the best 12"s in the Sandwell District discography; Born Again by Kalon. For whatever reason, Meier seems quite reticent to discuss that record in great detail but he was more than happy to talk about how electronic music 'ruined his life', what we can expect from Talker, and life in Chicago in general. It took only one time seeing Anthony Rother perform live for Mr. Dillinger to become completely obsessed with the idea of playing to a crowd without turntables (it was on a DVD and not even in-person: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5x8Rmd71Ro). He’d seen many live acts before as a student of the underground in Detroit and was already a DJ at the time, but something about seeing Rother’s mystique switched on a light that could not be turned off. That idea took nearly 14 years to become reality, but he finally unveils his first ever live PA exclusively for @DarkScienceElectro. 

Starting as an Electro/breaks DJ in 2000, and then continuing into production in 2010 he has finally started to find his stride this year. Francois Dillinger’s 2019 releases appear on @elektrodos, @blindallies, @naturalsciences, @ukonx, @dionysian-mysteries, and a full-length album on @narrowgauge. 2020 already has a slew of releases scheduled, including a second full-length album.
