Sometimes strong talent demands quick follow-ups, and when Liondub International and Adam Prescott first linked with “Technique” they wasted no time in making a strong move to secure more of the heavyweight sound from this producer. Featuring an all-star cast of Reggae artists including Sugar Minott (RIP), Ranking Joe, Johnny Osbourne, Jahdan Blakkamore, Metric Man, and Junior Dangerous, “Heavenless Riddim Story” presents a modern take on the classic one riddim album, packed with pressure from top vocal talent. The original “Heavenless Version” falls between digi-dub and dubstep, with low-bit sound effects, classic brittle dancehall drums and fat bass, and the producer subtly flips the riddim in different directions for each new version. Jahdan’s “No Bad Vibes” shows off his versatile deejaying while distorted bass billows out from underneath, while Johnny Osbourne’ “Dubplate Medley” borrows portions of his famous passages drawn through a heavy haze of effects which has garnered worldwide support from luminaries like David Rodigan and Iration Steppas. Both Junior Dangerous and Ranking Joe summon classic dancehall style when they flex, with Dangerous taking the more aggressive route while Joe twists his tongue and shouts in his fine style; Metric Man and Pad Anthony deploy contrasting sing-jay styles over two of the more drastic reworks of the riddim. Finally, the dearly departed guest of honor is Sugar Minott, whose “Soundboy Killing” strips the version back to foreground bass and percussion and leaves the focus clearly on his inimitable vocal style.  With eight distinctive interpretations from Prescott and a clutch of roots’ and contemporary reggae’s best vocal performers, “Heavenless Riddim Story” unites generations in the dancehall with fresh sounds from one of today’s most promising upcoming talents.

We’re well-pleased to offer up a hard and timely digi stepper from Reggae Roast’s Adam Prescott alongside the unbeatable Macka B - our last release of 2016.

Always insightful, clever, and serious-as-your-life, Macka B delivers a lyric tailor-made for these treacherous times, a deeply insightful essay on the many ways fear is deployed as a Babylonian weapon to keep us passive, obedient, distracted, confused, and compliant. From Brexit to the devil in orange skin, the message is both universal and local.

Relicking a classic Horace Andy tune (we’ll let you figure out which), a twinkling melody leads the way alongside militant snares and a darkly addictive bassline for a riddim grounded firmly in the 90s UK dub tradition. "Fear Dub" cracks open vaults of dubspace with Macka B’s voice delaying into pure signal, and the bass heaving from reverbed depths. Percussion multiplies through the stereo field while skanks, synth, and tones cut through the darkness like thermal images in a dark night.

Adam Prescott has releases on labels including his own Reggae Roast, Liondub, Grand Ancestor and Trigram. Macka B is a veteran with no less than 100 releases on many of the greatest reggae labels of all time, including Black Scorpio, XTerminator, Fashion, Penthouse, and an especially long and amazing run of releases on Mad Professor’s Ariwa label.
