Fouk, comprised of schoolmates Daniel Leseman and Hans Peeman (aka Junktion), first caught our attention in 2014 with their First Things First debut on Output. The Dutch duo then followed it up with releases on Room with a View and Detroit Swindle's Heist. They now deliver their fourth EP, Gruff, on London-based House of Disco Records, where Fouk now join a roster already boasting Francis Inferno Orchestra, Psychemagik, Late Nite Tuff Guy, Monitor 66 and more.

The title track and our favourite off the release, "Gruff" is an amalgamation of all funk music's greatness – a walking bassline underpin, groove-fuelled guitar licks, heady melodies on a wah-wah synth and dreamy vocal snippets. A healthy tribute to old-school funk in a modern-day format fit for any dancefloor.

Fouk's Gruff EP drops on vinyl on 18th January and digitally on 1st February 2016.

The man that represents the deeper side of Amsterdam house is back on Dirt Crew. His last outing on Detroit Swindle’s “Heist Recordings”, the “Le Troubadour EP” was another fine example of that laid back funky deep house only Nachtbraker can squeeze out.

Settling into the groove immediately is ‘Hump’, bouncing chords and a warbling Rhodes lead into an irresistible bass line. The title track, ‘Backstabber’ hits right in the hips, a chugging feel good work out for the dance floor. The flip remains true to the flavor of this whole EP, offering up a massive speaker rattling bottom end and funk flavored keys on ’Time Is Of The Essence’, while ’Monday Mourning’ steps up with expertly cut disco samples, an effervescent excursion with a jazzy lead and a touch of vocoder for good measure. The release is rounded out with digi only offering ‘Yaaa’, a sub driven deep house work out, boasting swelling loops and hypnotic percussion.

Nachtbraker’s sharp sense of harmony and knack for vibe is ever present throughout this whole release, he has truly fine tuned his sound to a perfect balance of unbounded energy and stylish musicianship. We are happy to welcome him back on Dirt Crew with this classy release.

Seven years and five volumes of »Treats« down the line, Retreat flips the script in 2016 and introduces a brand new remix series (cheekily) entitled »Re-Treats«! With Nebraska, Session Victim and Quarion reworking stables from the RTR back catalogue, »Re-Treats Vol.1« is a brilliant showcase of the art of the remix as each artist comes up with a truly personal take on the original material.

RTR18 starts in high fashion with digger extraordinaire Nebraska tackling the label’s most famous track so far, »Good Intentions« from Session Victim. It’s merely impossible to rework a bonafide modern classic but the english producer manages this task with ease and stays close to the original by breaking down the main loop into a one bar groove with super crisp beats. This would already suffice as the core for a powerful track but the real action begins after a short break: Nebraska brings the original four bar loop back at the forefront while adding a wicked samba twist to it! And as the kick comes back in, you can help but dance with your arms in the air and a big smile on your face. The »Soho Samba Mix« is an irresistible tune with that unmistakable »London« flair, not to mention a proper dancefloor anthem in its own right!

Turn the record over for Session Victim’s take on »A & F« from Iron Curtis & Leaves. It will only take a few bars for you to feel that you’re in  for a special ride with the one and only »Two Man House Band« at the commands. Matthias’ and Hauke’s version of »A & F« is much more a cover than a traditional remix as SVM add percussion, layers of juicy synths, loose drum fills and quirky samples over the original chords  and vocals. There are shades of Jazz, Soul, Reggae and even a bit of Pop in the »612 Remix« but the vibe is 100 % Session Victim. The lads  really excel in sun-drenched grooves and this remix is bound to become another staple in their dynamic live set for this summer’s festival season.

If the previous two reworks manage to somewhat stay close to the original material, then Quarion’s version of »Black Cream« takes an alternative route and propels Session Victim’s track into another dimension. Constructed around a tough beat and an hypnotic synth, the  »White Smoke Remix« is thrusted by a powerful bassline and flying hi-hats that evolve in rapid succession. Parts of the original (a vocal  here, a guitar there) are being fragmented to molecular level and clash with each other at light speed, as if Quarion managed to run these elements through the CERN’s Large Hadron Collider. It’s a dense, yet fluid remix and a thrilling conclusion to this first volume of »Re-Treats«.

[ CTT011 ] Alex Agore - Ultra EP

Fresh new Bristol-based label @piff-records open their doors armed with a slew of gleaming, steaming hot wax. We got our mitts on the new To Adelaide EP featuring a compilation of fine Australian talent. Out highlight comes as "Jessica's Place", which offers nothing less than pure smouldering synth-house heaven from (fairly) newcomer @arthurmilesmusic.

Though still relatively unknown across the pond, Arthur has funnily enough already made his Boiler Room debut, as part of the Untzz 12 Inch showcase last April. With his newness on Piff, expect the distinct, dreamscape sound that fellow house producers down under have worked hard to establish (for more, see: Mall Grab and Francis Inferno Orchestra). A clean track with an ever-so-slightly futuristic sound that is sure to grab your attention — as it did with ours. Give it a spin.

"Jessica's Place" will be released as part of a compilation entitled To Adelaide EP on 12" in 21st November. There are only 500 copies available, so pre-order it quick!

Brooklyn based label, Razor-N-Tape, has been pumping out delicious selections of contemporary house music since 2012. They’re back to tease our end of summertime sadness with one last block party banger. However, this time around they have relied on beats from across the pond – London-based producer Alistair Gibbs, better known as Nebraska, to be exact. Like many of our favorite house artists, Nebraska comes from the golden age of sample-based hip hop, making him well-suited for utilizing soulful excerpts in developing his funk-filled discography. The latest addition in his long list of tracks that stretch back to the early 90s is an original titled Usin’ Me, which features remixes from the likes of Lovebirds, The Revenge, and someone who we are lucky to feature below.

Harlem native, DJ Nature hops on a remix of Nebraska’s “Usin’ Me” to remind us that summer’s never over. Traveling through a smoldering baseline, DJ Nature goes deep into the jungle. His slowed down percussion-rich rework vibrates. Chimes, shimmering snares, and rattling hats gleam through the heavy atmosphere of the track. Shakers become rattling snakes and the borrowed squelches start to sound like bird calls over this airy bongo groove. Whether you're in the forest or on your walk to the train, DJ Nature is sure to ease you gently into the approaching chill.
