The sixth installment of trumpeter/arranger/producer/bandleader Todd Simon’s #JazzOn45 series focuses on some classics found within the genre. For the return of Wax Poetics, Todd has put together some of the more well-known gems found on 7-inch vinyl. Thanks to artists such as Kamasi Washington and Sons of Kemet, we have seen a newly found resurgence of this incredibly expressive and beautiful art form worldwide. Whether you are fairly new to digging into Jazz, or well-versed in it, you will enjoy listening to these selections at 45 rpm. Decided to release this mix I've had in my archives for a while. Was never fully happy with it, but alas it's a new year so I'm letting it go.

As the title suggests this mix is a collection of funky, soulful and cinematic songs making good use of string arrangements.

I remember the 1st time I heard of Lonnie Liston Smith; it was through the album credits of Jay-Z’s “Reasonable Doubt”. I’ve always been more intrigued with production rather than lyrics but still, I didn’t really catch on to his work until later on when I saw a video of Ski Beatz where he was explaining how he made “Dead Presidents“. That’s when I realized I had to dig deeper into LLS’ catalogue, especially as a young beat producer at the time.

Even since then, Lonnie Liston Smith has captured & mystified my ears with his music. Whether on the solo tip or with his Cosmic Echoes, LLS’ compositions are filled with funky rhythms, peaceful messages, celestial rhodes solos and timeless rhythms. He was, and still is a true visionary, and I’ll always feel like he was way ahead of his time.

For this mix, I selected some of my ultimate cuts, tracks that helped me escape from reality, travel to outer realms & meditate on my past/current/future endeavours.

Gilles Peterson presents a very special 3-hour mix dedicated to the recently departed trumpeter Roy Hargrove.

A prodigious talent whose star rose in the early 1990s, Roy Hargrove recorded and performed with a whole host of artists including Erykah Badu, Common, D’Angelo, Sonny Rollins, Herbie Hancock, Jackie McLean and Oscar Peterson.

Roy Hargrove’s life mission was the to spread the jazz message and succeeded. He departed on 2nd November 2018 at the age of 49, and Gilles Peterson pays a special tribute to the talents of the man with a 3-hour mix exploring the sounds that he brought to the world.
