Petersburg recluse Vladimir Karpov is an electronic musician and producer under the pseudonym X.Y.R. Many of his works are able to tune in to a meditative mood, and to completely immerse a sensitive listener in a state of hypnosis.

More than ten years ago Vladimir got his first synthesizer - the Soviet "formant", from which his musical career began. In his work, he prefers soft timbres, wavy ambient and the pacifying mystery of the New Age, and his track record, for example, includes releases on the California label Not Not Fun or the Oakland Constellation Tatsu.

Karpov's synthesizer melodies are distorted in a mirage landscape, and the enveloping vibrations emanating from all guitar gadgets twist like snakes in the air. Unsurprisingly, the abbreviation X.Y.R. stands for the Temple of Solitary Reflection - this is how the hero of "Dead Souls" landowner Manilov calls the homeless pavilion in which he indulges in lonely dreams. Likewise, the music of the Petersburg recluse, inspiring, soothing, and sometimes disturbing, has a solitary character.

This mix was recorded at Ahola Festival in 2021.

Can you feel it? Summer has truly arrived and the heat’s turned up to 11.  Good times are ahead as Palms Trax (we call him Jay) joins us on top form for the 14th episode of the Phonica mix series.

Jay’s been movin’ on up lately with a full schedule of DJ bookings, tight EP’s on Lobster Theremin and Dekmental plus a residency on Berlin Community radio that’s still going strong today. He’s developed a fluid live set that always changes depending on the booking and a real groove behind the decks which has earned him the closing set at P-bar after heavyweights Chez Damier & Gerd Janson. Once upon a time he even worked with us here at Phonica and now he’ll be playing across Europe all summer and flying over to Australia in November. He’s a humble dude and we’re happy people are catching onto his unique sound.

Surrounded by the exuberant oases of liveliness that is Barcelona, JMII developed himself into quite the studio wizard over the years. As a member of several projects, the versatile capabilities of Jami Bassols’ studio output is one that has demanded our full attention. These compelling formulas, containing a well-balanced mixture of lively synth lines, colourful melodies and cosmic house ambiences, come forward out of an extensive hardware set-up and have been kindly rewarded with multiple releases on Hivern Discs, Correspondant and MM Discos. We’ve had a little talk with the Hivern Discs family member and asked him for a contribution to our podcast series, resulting in a blistering mix filled with ambient-infused house and cosmic techno vibes.

After a little break, we continue our podcast series with a mix from Moscow-based avantgarde and experimental musician Åmnfx. Vasily (his real name) studied classical piano and guitar, started production in 2013 and had releases on such well respected labels like 100% Silk, Opal Tapes and his own Firering. One of his latest tracks was released as a part of compilation on the beloved MMODEMM, through which we got in contact with him. The mix he recorded for us is a raw unedited one-hour-essense of his current DJ performances. «Dub tunes go straight into rock experiments, lo-fi disco merges with acid thunders, which suddenly go out to smoke some deep techno for a minute or two». There are also 5 unreleased tracks from the boy himself, don’t miss!

Deep Reggae and heavy Dub: this month we present a show by Mark Ernestus with Tikiman on the mic. As the founder of the legendary Berlin based Hard Wax record store he laid the foundation for Berlin's electronic club music scene in 1989. As one half of Basic Channel (aka Maurizio), he gained international fame with a hybrid of Dub and Techno. As part of the duo Rhythm & Sound he refined this signature sound alongside a range of vocalists - most extensively Tikiman aka Paul St. Hilaire. For Carhartt WIP Radio they prepared a mix loaded with rare gems by Reggae legends such as Prince Jazzbo, Nitty Gritty, or Ken Boothe. Tune in and get absorbed by real weigthy bass pleasure!

"Third eye training" involves focusing attention on the point between the eyebrows with the eyes closed, and while the body is in various qigong postures. The goal of this training is to allow students to tune into the correct "vibration" of the universe and gain a solid foundation on which to reach a more advanced meditative state.
