History Hub is delighted to present ‘Kingdom, Empire and Plus Ultra: conversations on the history of Portugal and Spain, 1415-1898′. This new podcast series features interviews with experts in the areas of Portuguese and Spanish history, from the beginning of the Portuguese discoveries in 1415 to the end of Spanish dominion in America in 1898.

The interviews, conducted by historian Dr. Edward Collins, will cover a range of topics on the domestic and overseas histories of both nations, which include, among others: the Portuguese explorations of Africa and Asia, Spanish navigation and settlement in America, the church in Portugal and Spain, monarchy and intermarriage in the Iberian kingdoms, natural science and mapping in America, the role of nautical science, Irish historical relations with Portugal and Spain, and imperial competition in Europe and overseas.

UCD Gender Studies / Women’s History Association of Ireland (WHAI) presents 'Cumann na mBan, the Anglo-Irish Treaty and the Split, 1922; A symposium'. February 25th, 2022 (online.)

On February 5th, 1922, the Cumann na mBan convention was held in Dublin to consider its response to the Anglo-Irish Treaty. The executive of the organisation had already rejected the Treaty, as had all six women TDs. Cumann na mBan was the first major militant organisation to meet on the treaty, and the first to publicly split. Out of that split came an anti-Treaty Cumann na mBan who were actively militant during the Civil War, and a pro Treaty women’s organisation, Cumann na Saoirse, founded to support the Cumann na nGaedheal Government and the Irish Free State army. This symposium considers the important discussions, debates, impacts and legacies of that split, for political women and for women, more broadly, in the Free State.

The commercialisation of sport through history (Ep7 - Sport and Ireland: A History)

Maddalena Marinari is Associate Professor in History at Gustavus College in Minnesota. Maddalena has published extensively on immigration restriction and immigrant mobilization. 

She is the author of Unwanted: Italian and Jewish Mobilization Against Restrictive Immigration Laws, 1882-1965, which came out in 2020 with University of North Carolina Press, and provides the foundation for much of the discussion in this episode since it focuses on US opposition to Italian and Jewish immigrants in the late 19th century and early 20th century and outlines how Italian and Jewish communities in the US responded. 

Something that also informed the discussion is a special issue of the Journal of American History from 2022 that Maddalena co-edited with Erika Lee on the Immigration Act of 1924, which saw the US introduce an immigration quota system that substantially restricted immigration until the mid-1960s. Maddelena also co-edited, with Maria Cristina Garcia and Madeline Hsu, A Nation of Immigrants Reconsidered: U.S. Society in an Age of Restriction, 1924-1965 and she has a second related co-edited anthology coming out in 2023 with Maria Cristina Garcia titled Whose America? U.S. Immigration Policy since 1980 with the University of Illinois Press. 

Maddelena is also one of the scholars behind the excellent #ImmigrationSyllabus, an online tool for anyone interested in understanding the history behind current debates on immigration in the US.

Maddalena Marinari - Unwanted: American restrictionism and Italian and Jewish immigrants, 1882-1924

Dr Irial Glynn is Assistant Professor at the School of History, University College Dublin. He was recently awarded a €2m ERC Consolidator Grant for his study, SOS, which will investigate the history of boat refugees since the 1940s, asking who hinders and who helps asylum seekers on their journeys, and why.

1923: Hitler’s Breakthrough Year’ - Holocaust Education Ireland November Pogrom Lecture

To mark the date of the November Pogrom, Dr. Mark Jones gave a lecture - ‘1923: Hitler’s Breakthrough Year’ - in association with Holocaust Education Ireland, Trinity College Dublin and University College Dublin. The lecture took place on Tuesday 7 November in Trinity College Dublin.

1923 was Hitler’s breakthrough year. From the end of 1922 up to the infamous Beerhall Putsch in Munich during the night of 8-9 November, the Nazi Party grew from around 8,000 to over 50,000 members. In this lecture, historian Mark Jones examined the history of the year 1923 through the prism of antisemitic violence. 

In this talk you will learn about individual and collective acts of physical violence against Jews, the state-led deportation of Jews from Bavaria, and the role played by antisemitism in Hitler’s attempts to destroy German democracy a decade before he was appointed Chancellor of Germany in January 1933.

Mark Jones is Assistant Professor at University College Dublin. He was educated at Trinity College Dublin, the University of Tübingen and the University of Cambridge. He holds a PhD from the European University Institute in Florence and has held visiting fellowships at the Free University of Berlin and Bielefeld University. The author of 1923: The Forgotten Crisis in the Year of Hitler’s Coup, he is among the leading English-language historians of modern Germany and a recognized authority on the history of the Weimar Republic.

'Moriscos, Enslaved Children, and Litigating for Liberty in sixteenth-century Spain' with Dr Stephanie Cavanaugh.

Dr. Stephanie Cavanaugh is a historian of the early modern Spanish empire focusing on conversion, religious cultures, and the social and legal histories of sixteenth-century Castile. She earned her PhD in History at the University of Toronto in 2016. She is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Early Modern Conversions project at McGill University in Montréal. She has recently been appointed as the Sir John Elliot Junior Research Fellow in Spanish History at Oxford University. 

Her article “Litigating for Liberty: enslaved Morisco children in sixteenth-century Valladolid” was published in the Winter 2017 edition of Renaissance Quarterly. Her book project, currently under revision, is 'The Morisco Problem and the Politics of Conversion in Early Modern Spain'. She analyzes the gendered dimensions of Morisco legal agency in her article “In defense of community: Morisca women in sixteenth-century Valladolid,” which will appear in the forthcoming edited collection Women and Community in medieval and early modern Iberia (University of Nebraska Press).

(KEPU) Stephanie Cavanaugh - Moriscos, Enslaved Children & Litigating Liberty in 16th century Spain

Petition and Response: Spanish America and the Council of the Indies in the 16th Century with Dr Adrian Masters (UT Austin).

Adrian Masters is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Texas at Austin's Institute for Historical Studies. He defended his dissertation in May 2018 at UT Austin's Department of History under the supervision of Professor Jorge Cañizares-Esguerra. 

His research focuses on 16th-century Spanish imperial bureaucracy, racial formations, and state knowledge. He is currently co-authoring a book with Jorge Cañizares-Esguerra, entitled The Radical Spanish Empire (under contract with Harvard University Press). He is also working on his own book, tentatively entitled Empire of Petitioners: Creating the Law in the 1500s Spanish Empire, and he has a forthcoming article in the August edition of the Hispanic American Historical Review, called "A Thousand Invisible Architects: Vassals, the Petition and Response System, and the Creation of Spanish Imperial Caste Legislation."

In this podcast Adrian and series host Edward Collins discuss the petition and response system that has been central to Adrian's work on Spanish imperial bureaucracy, part of what he calls a ‘responsive regime’ – that is, a largely passive state that relied almost entirely on reports and requests of a huge range of subjects. This arrangement enabled the participation of almost anyone in the imperial system from the bottom up, and constructed the profoundly productive bureaucratic and social mechanics of the Spanish Empire, which incubated phenomena we associate with modernity today.

(KEPU) Adrian Masters - Petition & Response: Spanish America & Council of the Indies in 16th Century

Mestizaje and the Frontiers of Race and Caste in Colonial Mexico with Professor Ben Vinson III (Case Western Reserve).

Professor Ben Vinson III is Provost and Executive Vice President at Case Western Reserve University at Cleveland, Ohio. He is also a Professor of History at Case Western’s Department of History. 

Professor Vinson is a historian of Latin America whose scholarship focuses on colonial Mexico, with particular emphasis on race and the African presence in Mexico. He is the author and editor of a number of works, including Bearing Arms for His Majesty: The Free‐Colored Militia in Colonial Mexico (published in 2001), Flight: The Life of Virgil Richardson, A Tuskegee Airman in Mexico (published in 2004), Black Mexico: Race and Society from Colonial to Modern Times, co‐edited with Matthew Restall and published in 2009, and Africans to Colonial Spanish America, co‐edited with Sherwin K. Bryant and Rachel O’Toole, and published in 2012.

His most recent work, Before Mestizaje: Lobos, Moriscos, Coyotes and the Frontiers of Race and Caste in Colonial Mexico (Cambridge University Press) is the subject of episode 18 of History Hub's podcast series – ‘Kingdom, Empire and Plus Ultra: conversations on the history of Portugal and Spain, 1415-1898'.

Before Mestizaje is an examination of race and caste in colonial Mexico, and opens new dimensions on the history of these issues in Latin America by examining what Vinson refers to as ‘extreme’ caste groups in Mexico. Through examining the lives and experiences of these groups and others, the work seeks a deeper understanding between the idea of Mestizaje and the colonial caste system, by arguing that if we are to understand the concept of Mestizaje, we must understand earlier forms of racial mixture, hybridity, and elasticity that served as its precursor in the Spanish colonial world.

(KEPU) Ben Vinson - Mestizaje and the Frontiers of Race and Caste in Colonial Mexico

Palmira Fontes da Costa is Assistant Professor in Historiography, History of Science and Bioethics at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa (FCT).

Her main research interests are the history of medicine and natural history, science, medicine and the Portuguese Empire and the history of the medical book in the early modern period. Originally a biochemist by training, Professor Costa received a Ph.D in the History of Science from the University of Cambridge in 2000, working on The Experience of the Singular at the Royal Society of London in the Eighteenth Century.

Professor Costa is a Member of the Interuniversity Centre of History of Science and Technology (CIUHCT), a centre that brings together historians of science, technology and medicine from the two major universities in Lisbon, the University of Lisbon and the New University of Lisbon, or NOVA. She is also an Associate Member of the Portuguese Centre for Global History (CHAM) at NOVA. She is the author of a number of books and articles, including The Singular and the Making of Knowledge at the Royal Society of London in the Eighteenth Century, published in 2009, and the editor a number of works, including Percursos na Historia do Livro Médico 1450-1800 or Trajectories on the History of the Medical Book, 1450-1800, co-edited with Adelino Cardoso and published in 2011, and Medicine, Trade and Empire: Garcia de Orta’s Colloquies on the Simples and Drugs of India (1563) in Context, published in 2015.

Garcia de Orta

On the 12th March 1534, Garcia de Orta left Lisbon for India, taking with him his brief experience as a lecturer in Natural Philosophy at the University of Lisbon, a medical education at the universities of Salamanca and Alcalá de Henares as well as some years of medical practice in Portugal. At the time of Orta’s departure, Portugal had seen the growth of its empire in the East. His departure also occurred shortly after the establishment of the Inquisition in Portugal in 1531, an event that would prove fateful for for Orta due to his Jewish ancestry.

It was in Goa, the capital of the Portuguese empire of the East, that Orta developed most of his activities, establishing a successful medical and commercial practice in materia medica and precious stones. He also acted as the physician of governors and viceroys and, for some time, as Chief Physician of the Military Hospital of Goa. Orta’s lifelong project to accumulate knowledge on Eastern materia medica later materialized in his pioneering book, the Colóquios dos simples e drogas da India, or the Colloquies on the simples and drugs of India, published in 1563, primarily a medical and botanical book. But while publication of the Colloquies can be seen as the high point in Orta’s life, it also marks a downward personal trajectory for him marked by poor health and monetary difficulties. He died in 1568, and  year after his death, his family was persecuted severely and his sister Catarina, who by now was also living in Goa, was condemned and burned alive on charges of Judaism. Under torture, members of Orta’s family admitted that he had been a crypto Jew which led to his posthumous auto de fé in 1580. As a result, the remains of Orta’s body were exhumed and publicly burned.

Dr. François Soyer is a Senior Lecturer in Late Medieval and Early Modern History at the University of New England (Armidale, NSW, Australia). From January 2012 until early 2016, he was a Partner Investigator with the ARC Centre of Excellence for the History of Emotions at the University of Adelaide and then an Associate Professor in Late Medieval and Early Modern History at the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom between 2015 and 2018. 

He has published a number of books and articles, including The Persecution of the Jews and Muslims of Portugal: King Manuel I and the End of Religious Tolerance (1496-7), published in 2007, Popularizing Anti-Semitism in Early Modern Spain and its Empire. Francisco de Torrejoncillo and the Centinela contra Judíos (1674), published in 2014, and most recently, Antisemitic Conspiracy Theories in the Early Modern Iberian World: Narratives of Fear and Hatred, published in 2019. 

He is currently working on the origins, development and impact of the Antisemitic Ritual Murder and Blood Libel legends in Spain, focusing especially on the Blood Libel cases of San Dominguito de Val and the Holy Child of La Guardia.
