We know next to nothing about this band, other than they're from Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo. You might even have guessed that from the distorted thumb pianos which are highly redolent of Kinshasa's most famous recent export, Konono No.1 - but Mbongwana Star (Mbongwana means "change", apparently) are a very different proposition. There's some very strange dubwise production, courtesy of Parisian and sometime Tony Allen collaborator Doctor L, some eerie postpunk-sounding guitar work, and an altogether unique vibe. They're coming to Europe in April and May and there'll be an album on World Circuit around then too. We will be paying close attention.

Tucson, Arizona's CRIMEKILLZ had an all too-brief history. Forming in 2008, singer N8NOFACE & producer Scumbag Tony released two blistering synth punk EPs in 2010 ("Kills Kids") & 2011 ("Never Dies"), plus a great (delayed & generally unheard) album "Destroy Stress" in 2013.  A split 7" with N8's blood brother Zackey Force Funk, then one more self-released mini-album that year ("Slauson EP") and they were gone.

N8NOFACE created the sophomore album to his 2014 debut demo compilation "The Dolo Tape", with a newly crafted collection entitled "Stories Of Those" [HNR69]. Stories that are not commonly told are the stories of those. Fourteen minimal wave post-punk tales from inside, creep onto ill-lit streets and recede into a looming electronic shadow.

 
Our co-sign starts off by familiarizing us with his methods, only to report "The scene is dead... the scene is soft... the scene's not real" on lead banger 'Trucha' (with accompanying music video & collectible flexidisc [HNR70).  Paying fitting tribute to the author's narco-torius former hometown with the track 'Drugstore', and with pledged devotion just wants the kids to know 'It All Goes Away' (the second single & video).  Spectral Gonjasufi halfway-materializes from the aether, blessing some enduringly haunting bars on 'Hello God', however disappears just as fast, with the narrator taking exit close behind. In less than thirty minutes the album ends, though with as much as you were just told, explicit details remain dark and for the life of you cannot recall actually seeing a face...


"Stories Of Those" is released on MAY 8, 2017 with the first pressing of 300qty limited-edition White or Bloodstain 12" vinyl records (each housed in a screenprinted monochrome cardboard jacket), compact cassette tapes, 7" flexi-discs (with the non-album B-side 'Full Clip'), plus special bundles with collectible handmade zines, buttons, stickers & more.
