Ange Halliwell first touched the harp when he was 12 years old. From the verdant countryside of southwestern France, he composes music combining hypnotic arpeggios, sound layers and voices sometimes sung, spoken or shouted. Ange Halliwell's creations are intimately linked to nature. They feed on multiple influences: traditional music, lyricism, contemporary hyper pop... We can hear the sound of cicadas in his music, in his clips, we run alongside Pastou, his faithful companion and muse. In a total project, Ange Halliwell creates a musical and visual universe that is both luminous and melancholy.

With his new album "Lullaby for the dead", Ange explores different universes in which grief, creatures, hopes and contemplation are mixed. Through his electric harp and other elements such as the voice, the hurdy-gurdy or a tale, each piece is like a prayer, a tribute to these invisible worlds and these emotions that overwhelm us all at some point in our lives. "Fly, fly beautiful soul! The afterlife awaits you..."

‘Me & You’ is Betty Hammerschlag’s first Transatlantic venture. It’s made up of unwound and reconstituted pop fragments, spun out and stretched and remoulded to hypnotise. It captures the gloss and sentiment of mass-audience chart-toppers, pitch-perfect music calibrated for maximal emotional resonance, and refracts it to dazzling, intimate effect.

Opener ‘Boyfriend’ is pure pining, a swarm of stomach butterflies in flight. ‘Focusedd’ floats a breathy Bieber vocal shard over a circuitous Harry Styles acapella, made weightless by delicate synth caresses. It’s imperfect and warm, like reconstructed memories. The golden-pink haze of ‘You Know Wassup’ stands as the EP’s centrepiece, a swoon-inducing soft-focus heartstopper made to sigh to. These songs caress and pulse with new life, synthetic pop outputs rendered organic. Pure feeling.

Elvin Brandhi and Nadah El Shazly refuse to turn away from the horror. The intercontinental duo’s Pollution Opera album is an uncompromising futurist depiction of our disfigured, dystopian, and dying reality. Facing hell in full defiance, the experimental noise album catapults itself through a volatile compound of breathless shouts, screams, and screeches, in collision with vocal samples, environmental recordings, and acousmatic sounds. Ten tracks cover the spectrum of electroacoustic fragments and vocalizations, treacherously suspended between the roar of engines and synth distortion, of evocative intonations or guttural retching.

First conceived in 2020, Pollution Opera bubbled up organically from a first tandem motorbike ride through El Shazly’s hometown of Cairo. Singing and screaming through the second-loudest city in the world, Brandhi and Shazly found the extreme noise pollution served as catharsis from the suffocating smog that surrounded them. They then took these sonic specimens into studios across years and countries—from the initial recording and sessions in Egypt to Uganda, where their so-called “cacophony carbon orchestra” would carry into simultaneous but separate residencies at Nyege Nyege in Kampala. There, Brandhi and Shazly reprised the role of the motorbike as their “stage,” in a city where motorbikes are the main mode of public transport. They then developed a live A/V performance from video material captured by Arno Mery, collected from their travels, and reworked by Egyptian artist Omar El Sadek during Banlieues Bleues Festival 2023 in France.

The result is what the artists themselves describe as “an uncompromising world-spew, a shameless alloy of love and hate.” Haptic knocking, barking dogs, and human growls trample El Shazly’s famously evocative Egyptian singing style on “CRÎi Me A River.” Breathless vocal cut-ups and samples are bulldozed by arrhythmic acoustic percussion on “Danse Le Flou.” There are moments of respite within all the chaos, however, whether in the heavily pitched, Auto-Tuned opening of “Pollute Bold” or the wonderfully melodic closer of “Crisp Heart”—its derelict rhythmic thrust giving a listener something to dance about.

Both artists lend their unique positioning and idiosyncrasies to Pollution Opera, whether it’s in artist, vocalist, and musician Brandhi’s avant-garde noise music pedigree as both a solo artist and member of father-daughter duo Yeah You, or
singer, composer, and producer El Shazly’s hybrid catalogue combining electronic music with contemporary classical. Together, in asking the question of what a postmodern opera might sound like, the duo offer their existential answer in the true spirit of the often playful and ironic philosophical position by offering no answer at all.

‘Passing Through All Happy Dreams Like Hallways’ is an album by New York City-based artist Bug Bus Piano (@goodnightbed). It’s on TT.

It’s a world. A zone of elusive memories and insomniac fog. An album of murky mirages, slow-spiralling smoke plumes, gently bobbing streetlights viewed through bleary eyes during hours outside of time. Dream-to-mp3 conversion.

The spectral hypnagogia of ‘Blue And Purple Ribbons In The Hallways’ and ‘Tired’ haunt and soothe in equal measure, while the low-lidded vignettes of ‘Unlucky’ #1 through #6 conjure ghostly, stairwell-dwelling figures. Sleep paralysis angels. Whispering windows and shadows that sigh.

This is night music. ‘Open-Air Factory (Entering The Battlefield Version)’ is a mind playing tricks on itself, ‘All Clocks Stopped And The Dream Rewound’ is pure sleepwalking sugar. Songs that flicker and glow like candlelight, music about half-hallucinated conversations that might have meant everything or nothing at all. Blurry mnemonic outlines of encounters that feel significant, if you could only bring them to mind. There’s truth in dreams, but a weary head is hard to trust.

Per ‘Lucky’: “The path into the light seems dark. The path forward seems to go back. The direct path seems long. True power seems weak. True purity seems tarnished. True steadfastness seems changeable. True clarity seems obscure. The greatest art seems unsophisticated. The greatest love seems indifferent. The greatest wisdom seems childish.”
