I have ambivalent feelings about Lovestock ... but THIS sounds like a very cool set!

Avec cette balade audio commandée par le CCI, Rachel Ní Chuinn nous emmène sur les pas de Joyce à Paris... Quelle a été l’influence de la Ville lumière dans l’écriture d’Ulysse ? Quelle est l’importance de l’espace public pour Joyce (qui souffrait de problèmes de vue) ? Pour répondre à ces questions, l’artiste sonore et compositrice s’est entretenue avec des spécialistes de l’auteur : Declan Kiberd, Barry McCrea et Katherine O’Callaghan.

On déambule de la rue de l'Assomption, premier lieu parisien de résidence de Joyce, à Passy ; du square de Robiac, où les Joyce ont longtemps habité, au 9 rue de l’Université, là où se situait l’Hôtel Lenox, où la famille a quelquefois séjourné ; du 29 rue du Cherche-Midi, adresse du cabinet médical de l’ophtalmologue de Joyce, le Dr Louis Borsch, à la place du 18 juin 1940, où se trouvait son restaurant préféré Les Trianons ; du 8 rue Dupuytren, adresse originelle du Shakespeare & Co de Sylvia Beach, au 12 rue de l'Odéon, deuxième adresse de la librairie ; du 71 rue du Cardinal Lemoine, où Joyce a achevé Ulysses dans l’appartement de Valéry Larbaud, à la statue de Sainte-Geneviève sur le Pont de la Tournelle…

How did Paris influence the final stages of Ulysses? As we celebrate the centenary of the publication of Ulysses in Paris, this commissioned audio tour looks at the importance of public space to Joyce, who had to negotiate it with very poor eyesight, and how our movement through the city can bring us closer to the ideas in the book. Sound artist and composer Rachel Ní Chuinn teamed up with Joycean scholars Declan Kiberd, Barry McCrea and Katherine O'Callaghan to help answer these questions.

The places and addresses that are evoked in the audio work are rue de l'Assomption, Joyce’s first real residence in Paris; Passy; square de Robiac, where the Joyce family lived for longest; 9 rue de l'Université, the site of the original Hotel Lenox where the family stayed from time to time; 29 rue du Cherche-Midi, where Joyce’s optician Dr Louis Borsch practiced; place du 18 juin 1940, the site of his favourite restaurant Les Trianons; 8 rue Dupuytren, original location of Sylvia Beach's Shakespeare & Co; 12 rue de l'Odéon, later address of Beach's Shakespeare & Co;  71 rue du Cardinal Lemoine, where Joyce finished writing Ulysses in Valéry Larbaud's apartment.  Another location of significance is the statue of Sainte Geneviève at the Pont de la Tournelle.

Camilla Hannan is an Australian sound artist known for her installation, performance, composition and radio works and for exclusively using field recordings. Processing recordings into abstract representations of place and experience, Hannan investigates the construction of urban and natural environments sonically and spatially, morphing these elements into new unsettling worlds. She has a particular interest in site-specific work outside of traditional gallery and narrative constructs.

Camilla Hannan's soundtrack for Ears Have Ears is in keeping with her usual composition methods, created exclusively from field recordings and following traditional Musique Concrète ideas. Hannan's work is titled 'All that Remains', read her description for it below. 

All that Remains is composed from a range of field recordings made by myself over the last 12 months. The nature of the composition and arrangement reflects my interest in the use of field recordings to move beyond the documentary. For me field recordings are a palette by which a new composition is made. In this way I follow the school of thought developed by Musique Concrète and their ideas around ‘l’objet sonore’ or the sound object.  What interests me about a field recording is less about the place in which it is recorded but more about the nature of the recording itself. What is its timbre?  its dynamics?  Its frequency range?  And how one sound can be juxtaposed against another to create new and fantastic environments outside of the real and documented. While most of the sounds I use are recognisable, others are not. I mix the real with the abstracted and the mundane with the dramatic.

Daniel Brandt, co-founder of Germany’s electroacoustic ensemble Brandt Brauer Frick, joins the Erased Tapes family with his solo debut album Eternal Something – available worldwide now.

What started off as a more simplistic idea soon evolved into something a lot more complex as the London and Berlin based music producer travelled across the world, experimenting with various other artists and different instruments. From his father’s cabin based in the German countryside with access to nothing but cymbals, to being surrounded by guitars in Joshua Tree, his unexpected journey soon progressed into what became his first solo album.

Daniel played nearly all instruments himself with the only exception being fellow musicians Florian Juncker on trombone, Manu Delago on hang drum and Andreas Voss on cello. Using his Berlin studio as his main base for recording, Brandt created an album that encapsulates the idea that despite setting out with a particular creative vision, external influences and environments will always shift the process, and create an Eternal Something.

Words from Daniel, January 2017:

“The initial idea was to make a cymbal album. I wanted to surround myself with all types of cymbals. I locked myself into my father’s cabin in the woods for three days. That was the moment I realised it was not possible for me to make an album just with cymbals because other ideas and instruments imposed themselves on me. I had a clear sense of what I wanted to do now. The intention was to let the songs evolve by themselves and not edit too much, keep it raw and have an explosion-like energy to them. I wanted to create a different sound, songs that build up like dance tunes but don't feel like club music at all. Travelling around in California for two months gave me the possibility to deeply get into this concept outside my normal environment. Robert Raths, who served as a great motivator throughout the whole process (I guess he had listened to the record more than I ever had) came up with the perfect order for the songs. This record is about failing to make the original plan happen, but then the discovery of something I couldn't even think of before.”

Prior to being enlisted to create the album artwork, Iranian artist Shaz Madani coincidentally had also planned a trip to Joshua Tree where she documented her own experience of Eternal Something, forming the visual counterpart to the record.

Fascinated by the existence of two Queens ruling at the same time on a single island, within an extremely male dominated society in the 16th century, composer and artist Olivia Louvel explores the reign of Mary Queen of Scots Vs Elizabeth I and delivers her own singular transposition: Data Regina.
Drawn to the life and writings of Mary Queen of Scots, a poet and essayist herself and one of the most read woman of her time, Olivia Louvel assembles a digital narrative through 17 compositions capturing different palettes, tones, playing with identity within the 'duality-duel' relationship of the two women, two queens and cousins, who were never to meet.
'Data Regina' is a body of work which gathers electronic songs 'The Antechamber’, along with a series of instrumentals, 'The Battles’, a sonic landscape inspired by the 16th century battles on the Anglo-Scottish border.
As well as the publication of a CD, the interactive digital work www.dataregina.com will provide a further platform to showcase the 3D animations produced by young animator Antoine Kendall as well as curated historical references.
Composed and mixed by Louvel, the album also features Fiona Brice (Bella Union, John Grant....) on violin.
'Data Regina' was mastered by AGF (aka Antye Greie-Ripatti).

En arpentant leur quartier, sept artistes vivant chacun dans une ville européenne différente se réapproprient leur univers quotidien et nous parlent saisonnalité, biodiversité, sons, accessibilité, équipements publics, espaces naturel et bâti…

Audio postcards from seven artists in their neighbourhoods co-curated by Fiona Hallinan and Nora Hickey M’Sichili

Déambulations is an audio walk series launched by CCI in March 2021. One of the quiet consequences of restricted movement this last year has been a shift in our perceptions of the perimeters of place, locality and home. These moments of 'staying put' have brought heightened awareness of seasonality, the behavioural patterns of neighbours, biodiversity, multi-species throughways, soundscapes, accessibility and public amenities as well as natural and built environments. 

Seven artists from different approaches and practices have been invited to create audio routes through their local neighbourhoods in different European cities.
