Delighted to start the year with a mix by London-based and Shanghai-rooted modular sound artist, DJ and performer - co-founder of independent music platform ARCHIVES - Kaiyumi. Kai's journey gradually unfolds from glitchy ambient to shamanic downtempo  rhythms, englobed by colorful atmospheres and filled with emotion.

Conscious Listening Mix Series - 20 - Kaiyumi

This is a homage to "Music of Changes" by John Cage.

"Ten spectators arbitrarily select one of the ten records that the player prepared in advance and choose one song. The player has to play the ten songs from ten records in the order chosen by the ten spectators. Five minutes after the first song is played, play the second song and leave it alone. After another five minutes have elapsed, the playback of the first song is stopped, and the third song is immediately played and left again. Even the song finished before five minutes have elapsed, the player may not exchange it for the next song. The player must wait until five minutes have elapsed. The player repeats this process until all ten songs chosen by the spectators have been played. The passage of five minutes is signaled to the player by the sound of wind chimes."

This recording was demonstrated on November 3, 2021 at Knock in Koenji, Tokyo.

Chee Shimizu (@organicchee) has carved out a significant presence as a DJ, both in Japan and on the international stage, showcasing a versatile and free-form playing style that spans genres like avantgarde, dance, experimental, and Japanese music. Widely recognized for his pivotal role in Tokyo's esteemed Organic Music record store and the 17853 Record label, he also hosts a monthly radio show on NTS. Shimizu is a versatile music professional, contributing as a music selector, compiler, writer, producer, and remixer. His impact extends to live sessions with improvisers, and in February 2021, he released the album "Chee Shimizu + miku-mari" on the ESP Institute label in LA. Acknowledged for his expertise, he is also celebrated as the author of the widely acclaimed book "Obscure Sound" in Japan and beyond.

We were happy to cross paths at Mostra last year where she played an incredible live drone set, and even happier to showcase her talents through this mix series. Much like her productions, the mix encompasses all the nuance, and emotional depth that we love in Ambient music. Hitting those poignant moments and providing space for introspection. "Abstraction and textures unfold as I walk through a damp forest. With each passing moment, the scent of moist earth becomes more intense. At the end of the path, I come across a small waterfall. It's the perfect place to sit, relax, sip on the hot tea I brought in the thermos, and contemplate the wonderful landscape being painted for me by this melody."

FeLid (@64thnote) is the solo project by Kazutoshi Eguchi from Japan. From the field recording, music instruments to production tools, FeLid creates/blends/breaks down all kinds of sounds spontaneously to find his own universe of music.

"Truly, I feel privileged to have been able to craft a sonic space for Temple. And to have done it with the volume so high and with such equipment. Over two (strange) (eclectic) (kitschy) hours, I simulated being a sensitive algorithm, choosing only and exclusively songs that once moved me and that, far from their real labels, have always been in the same drawer. A personal Moebius strip, as a good friend said after the set. It seems that if you close your eyes and let yourself be carried away, genres merge and disappear: only the emotion and commitment remain. Since early 00s DJ Yudetaro/UDT (@motoyama-hiroyuki) has performed as a DJ in various underground venues in Tokyo. He loves mixing sounds that span across various genres from Techno/House, reggae/world music to avangarde/drone, and recently is interested in Ambient/Experimental music that blends seamlessly with the environment and atmosphere. Now he hold a party regularly at a beach house on the beautiful seashore in Miura-city, Kanagawa. He offered mixes to Born Free in 2019 and Rinse France in 2021.

This mix consists of Japanese ambient/experimental musicians' tracks from 1970's to 2020's.
