Her penchant for low-swung basslines & hypnotic rhythms caught our ears at Above Below back in 2023 & we're so happy to finally be hosting her on the series.

My name’s Lucie (she/her) and I live deeeep in South London. 

+ 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 & 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐝? 𝐬𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐮𝐬…
This set was originally recorded at Goo Night in Spanners, a snug, intimate venue in South East London. Imagine a roomful of free, sweaty bodies moving to the rhythm, surrounded by dense red-tinted haze. The atmosphere was sexy and sticky that night. 

A little disclaimer regarding the recording. I had to re-record the second part of the set at home due to sound quality but the essence of it is in no way compromised 🙂

+ 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐮𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫?
I wanted to put together a set focusing on spaciousness and the interplay between heady depth and liberating playfulness, exploring ways in which the two can meaningfully coexist. The idea was to allow the audience to release their body fully on the dancefloor so obviously there had to be a good amount of energy running through the veins of the set. But at the same time, I really wanted to tickle their minds, open doors to imagination, introduce depth so if one really listens in, there is a whole world of sonic magic to explore - a complexity both sonic and emotional. 

+ 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮r 𝐫𝐞𝐤𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐛𝐨𝐱 / 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚 𝐠𝐢𝐠?
The process always starts with digging for new music that sets the tone for the playlist or when packing my record bag. I look for a specific flavour of sounds for each gig, thinking about the context in which I will be playing and trying to understand what possible directions I can take. 

Once I select those fresh tracks, I start building the rest of the playlist around it, first more generally and as I listen back with the set approaching, I keep refining it until it feels like it has enough substance. At the same time, I make sure it is generous enough so I can cover a lot of ground if the gig goes in a different direction than what I expected. It’s always a balance of keeping one’s artistic integrity while working with the crowd to create a powerful experience for everyone.

Terra Obscura is a collaborative event I run together with my close friend Alicia. We started the series back in March 2022 at Ormside Project which is still our home to this day. Me and Alicia have an impressive overlap in terms of music taste but we are also quite good at challenging each other's ideas which I believe is important for a healthy growth of any project. We are both into a lot of deep, intricate music within the ambient & downtempo, techno, breaks & bass realm to give you a very rough idea about our programming. 

When we are building a line-up, we always throw around a lot of names and then try to find a common thread among the artists we want to book. We imagine how their sound would work in a particular slot and how their sets would flow into each other so there is a sense of development throughout the night. This process is usually quite long but in some ways really intuitive. 

What is very important for us is to approach the event as a whole, a night that effortlessly moves forward along a curatorial narrative, one step at a time from the start to the very end, moving from horizontal ambient to sweaty dance as it progresses.

FeLid (@64thnote) is the solo project by Kazutoshi Eguchi from Japan. From the field recording, music instruments to production tools, FeLid creates/blends/breaks down all kinds of sounds spontaneously to find his own universe of music.

Since early 00s DJ Yudetaro/UDT (@motoyama-hiroyuki) has performed as a DJ in various underground venues in Tokyo. He loves mixing sounds that span across various genres from Techno/House, reggae/world music to avangarde/drone, and recently is interested in Ambient/Experimental music that blends seamlessly with the environment and atmosphere. Now he hold a party regularly at a beach house on the beautiful seashore in Miura-city, Kanagawa. He offered mixes to Born Free in 2019 and Rinse France in 2021.

This mix consists of Japanese ambient/experimental musicians' tracks from 1970's to 2020's.

HOCast #185 - DJ Yudetaro

Tatsuoki started his DJ career in 2011. His DJ skills provide the perfect tuning for the dance floor, spanning various techno genres from deep hypnotic, acid, trance, to psychedelic. A beloved artist for playing crossover and adventurous techno, expertly reading the dance floor's energy. Tatsuoki's DJ mixes have been featured on podcasts like Dino Sabatini's Outis Music (Italy), Out System (Germany), Oslated (Korea), Munitum (Italy), TechnoTrippin', Archaic (Spain), and MONUMENT (Norway) since 2016.

In 2012, Tatsuoki launched his own event in Tokyo, "Broad," committed to crossover and adventurous techno. He booked renowned international techno artists, including those from the UK Bristol bass, Detroit electro, and deep hypnotic scenes. "Broad" flourished into a techno party hosted at Contact Tokyo.

Tatsuoki moved to Fukuoka in spring 2020 seeking a new scene. He continues his "Broad" events at Kieth Flack in Fukuoka, booking both Japanese and international techno artists bimonthly, helping to shape the city's techno scene. His future holds national and international endeavors, evidenced by his May 2023 set at HÖR Berlin and upcoming July tour in Asia. For the next stage of his career he has begun to produce original music.

"Serious Cut" is the project of Raúl Zapata, a renowned artist in the underground scene of Valencia. With an exquisite taste and enviable technique, his personal sessions explore the most daring styles of electronic music. Under the name "Serious Cut," he performs ambient and electronic music heavily influenced by the 90s.

Muzan Editions is honored to welcome SBat once more to our growing collection of mixes and sets by friends near and far. For this installment, we present SBat's ambient set at the wonderful Liminal Dreams party in Tokyo (2023.12.10). SBat conjures up a shimmering dreamscape of sounds that warps seamlessly between genre and mood, guiding the listener through nostalgic rememberances, glistening electronic futures, and hazy mirages that elude categorization. We recommend getting very comfortable and organizing some proper listening conditions before drifting off (and drifting deep) into this one.

We'd like to thank the Liminal Dreams crew for signing off on our use of Sbat's set. LD has a special place in the hearts of us here at Muzan. Not only are they an integral part of the flourishing ambient scene in Tokyo, but were kind enough to invite Endurance to their very first event - and Dérive to their latest party last month! Their lineups are always incredible, with past special guests including artists like Sunju Hargun, Chris SSG, Sapphire Slows, and Jane Fitz - just to name a few. All of which makes us even more excited to be showcasing a set from one of their events. Enjoy!
