Juno: If you're going to launch a new re-edit series, it's probably wise to get some big hitters on board. That's certainly what the people behind Theme From Kaffe have done for their debut offering. Italian heavyweights Bottin lead the way with "Ora La So", a lo-slung, Clavinet-heavy chunk of dirty Balearica blessed with sleazy, whispered vocals. Sleazy McQueen continues the eccentric theme with the chugging reggae-disco bounce of "Back To Hell", before Albion ups the tempo on the dusty, vocoder-laden wonky disco chug of "Experimento". An excellent EP concludes with the sprawling soundtrack disco of Ivory Boy's "Mare" and "Bright Mezcal" by Avanti, a curiously bumpin chunk of dub disco weirdness blessed with alien synths and a brilliantly rubbery bassline.

Mystic Thought

Returning from the Italian excursion of Vol. 13 before the U.K. pulls up the proverbial drawbridge, Neil Diablo delivers another To Rack & Ruin winner live and direct from the Northern powerhouse. Showing some love for the finerhalf of the county, Neil presents the best the North East has to offer, enlisting ‘Our friends from the north’Yorkshire's Craig Bratley and Newcastle's James Hadfield to do the damage on this slick split 12".
After a relatively quiet 2016, Mr Bratley shuffles his Magic Feet into the studio and sticks his fist directly into the mainframe, coming back with a pair of strangely psychedelic body movers to decorate the A-side. 'Ani Kuni' bursts out the blocks in a swell of fizzing sequencer, throbbing bass and tonking mid tempo percussion, sparking away wildly like a Tesla toothbrush. An East-meets-West affair, the track marries the thrusting electronics of Krautrock with lightly spiced Indian vocals and hippie guitar licks, conjuring visions of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi gurning away at a Faust show. Bratley retains the propulsive percussion for A2 number 'Acid Mother', syncing gurgling synth bass beneath loose funk guitars and warbling lead lines as we're slowly sucked through the wormhole. As the track chugs ceaseless through Baldelli's cosmic terrain, rhythmic chants and rubbery bass solos reverberate through the vacuum, locking us into their other worldly gravity. Resistance is futile.
We head up the A1 for the flipside, hooking up on the toon with Elizabeth Collective mainstay James Hadfield, who serves up two reheated treats tastier than your last parmo! Wielding the white stiletto and sweet sequinned shimmer, Hadfield lets loose his disco juice on "Love And Affection", chucking some dreamy Gamble & Huff vocals over a dope and dusty groove. Crackling like a campfire cookout, this infectious cut spits out slick bass, dubbed out guitar and precise percussion, keeping your body in motion while the piano noodle and soulful vocal swirl through your brainspace. Things take a turn for the technologic on "Silent Builder", those organic disco licks replaced by swelling sine waves, soaring siren calls and military breakbeats. The punchy bassline provides a steady hand as the track gradually pulls itself apart, unravelling into squelching synth wobbles, oddball samples and proggy solos.
Wonderfully wonky, this is music for when the walls start to melt. Four freaky cuts from two top talents - To Rack & Ruin for the win.

Edits, edits, edits. They are everywhere at the moment! There is a label that has been dealing out the good stuff, the pure, 100% authentic raw stuff for a considerable amount of time. This label has been doing their thing since the edit game exploded, the disco DJ’s favourite, Razor-N-Tape (soundcloud).
If, like us, you are an avid follower of the label then you will know what to expect from their Edit series. Fun, groovy and unquestionably excellent source material, all releases are tasteful homages to the originals, not overdone but with just the right amount of dance floor impact for modern audiences.
Today’s premiere comes from Reverend P (soundcloud), a Parisian disco don with a history of making killer edits for G.A.M.M. and Basic Fingers. Track B1 is called Way U Get Me.

It’s not easy to get the balance right when approaching someone as legendary as Barry White, but Reverend P nails it. An altogether DJ friendlier cut, the track builds as the original does but this edit teases and teases without using the overblown sections that the album version has.
There’s nothing quite like Barry's velvety smooth voice, this edit cuts the right amount and uses the beats and bass with a smattering of the horn section perfectly. All in all, a very well thought out and dancefloor orientated edit. This will be on rotation for a long time!
We look forward to his next edit choice and also the next instalment in Razor-N-Tape’s wonderful series.

To round up things we were able to convince italian Rework/Edit legend Les Inferno to give us his previously unrelesaed track „Brazilewis“, a chillout slo-mo groover, that you can find in all of DJ Supermarkt’s sets for some time now. Les Inferno releases on Samosa Records, one of the hippest new Edit/Rework labels (striclty vinyl). His tracks were already championed by none other then Mister Moodyman himself.

There’s a new Technicolor musical phenomenon emitting from the Morphogenetic Field… Known as The Emanations, this new project will act as a vessel for Greg and Ché Wilson to explore a new cut and paste approach to production. Sending fragments of classic and cult classic dance tracks through their sonic prism to create fresh hybrids.

The past couple of years have been prolific for the pair in the studio, turning their hand to a number of varied official remixes, including Sleight Of Hands’ 10CC cover for Green Gorilla Lounge, The Cuban Brothers cover of Razzy’s Northern Soul classic, Heavenly Records Melbourne-based outfit Confidence Man, Hipnotic’s early ‘80s boogie, Brooklyn collective Underground System on Soul Clap Records, Serbian electronic live act Bella Technika and the Confidence Man-affiliated Jungle Giants – with further mixes delivered and in the pipeline.

The Emanations project has been developing alongside this plethora of remixes, with Greg and Ché utilising stems provided by Tyrell, the Canadian-based multi-instrumentalist also responsible for replaying the parts for Rolling Stones/Massive Attack mash-up ‘Two Sides Of The Sympathy’ and SWS Chemise cover, ‘She Can’t Love You’.

‘Love’ is the first offering from the project, and links back to the beginnings of Super Weird Substance. Like with the label’s debut release, ‘Summer Came My Way’, the song was originally written by Greg Wilson and performed by The Reynolds for Schooled In The Classics.

This time however, it was mixed down at SWS HQ. Blending and fusing Tyrell’s re-recordings, GW and CW fed The Reynolds through a vocoder, inviting deeply emotive flautist Manon McCoy to add a delicate layer of ethereal magic.

Regarding music, he released his balearic and psychedelic disco on Midnight Riot, Chopshop, Le Renard Records and now mostly on his own Hot'n'Spicy vinyl imprint.
