Sticky Tapes is a seasonal mixtape series. Four times a year we ask our favourite selectors to compile a mixtape in the ambiance of the seasons.

Nijmegen's own Guus Christian digs, plays, edits and enjoys colourful, soulful dance music. Sometimes deep, sometimes exuberant. Sometimes as radio host for Open Source Radio, sometimes as resident DJ for the infamous Blauwdruk parties. But always with an ear for honest musicality. In this mix, we travel the globe with him during an hour of music fit for a dance with sand between your toes and a setting sun on your face. Summer is over, but at least we got this souvenir to keep us warm during the winter.

This week, it is with great pleasure that we can bring you a mixtape selected from an impressive record collection, complied bu dedicated crate digger, and true purveyors of global sounds: La Casa Tropical.

Hailing from Toronto, but spending lots of their of time in Johannesburg where the record label has taken its deep rooted musical influence, La Casa Tropical crew are on a mission to release and reissue the feel good party gems that they have discovered on their African adventure. 

No wonder then, that our past guest REES opened his Bside account with this sunny song from their 2018 reissue of Bayete’s Blue Monday, just a little taste of the amazing music they have discovered in South Africa :

Their quest has allowed them to share some amazing music with their followers and fellow party goers across Europe and the US. But, today they will be sharing with the world the jewels of their journey from the Bside of their collection.

La Casa Tropical living up to the name with non-stop feel good summer tunes, all the way from the joyful bliss of a deep dubby downtempo variety, to bopping hip-hop beats, soulful lyrics and Caribbean percussions, before moving on up to some energetic rhythms from mother Africa.

Sticky Tapes is a physical mix series for charity. All mixes will be available to buy on cassette or digitally with all proceeds going to the DJs charity of choice.

This is Sticky 003: CC:DISCO! x BÁRBARA BOEING - Two amazing DJs sharing both sides of the cassette. They have both chosen the full proceeds of this tape to go to Casa T, here is what they do in their own words: "House. Home. Shelter. This project has the intention, the necessity and the urgency to provide shelter and protect trans bodies. Trans people live, in their majority, in a very vulnerable situation. A lot of us struggle with housing, no money or resources for the bare minimum: shelter and food. This is a distress call! For the decades of discrimination and abandonment we suffered, but also a political proposal of reparations. Human Rights. We are all human beings on the same Earth. Rinse FM resident and lover of all things disco CC:DISCO! and Alter Disco head Bárbara Boeing team up to deliver 90 minutes of soulful synth-pop, disco and house tracks.

On side A the pair explore more smooth and downtempo sounds from across the world, whilst on side B they focus on more club-focused house tracks. Lots of rarities from the 80s and 90s across the whole hour and a half.

No Bad Days with Hollick - January 2021

Following the success of Special Touch - Garden of Life, Heels & Souls Recordings kick off their 12” reissue series with an EP of digger delights from Frankfurt’s under-the-radar production trio of Manfred Holz, Michael Buchner and Jürgen Blömke, complete with a balearic remix from London duo, Good Block.

One side contains the instantly absorbing, late '80s electro nugget, 'Steal It An’ Deal It', from the aptly named The Soundstealers. Cruisin the slow lane at 100BPM, an idiosyncratic blend of samples, sound effects and percussive flourishes, underpinned by chest rumbling bassweight, guarantees dancefloor bedlam whether drawing for the dance or dub mix. 

On the flip you’re treated to obscure acid chugger ‘Amazonia’. Originally created for the opening credits of a ‘90s German nature documentary ‘Wunder Wildnis’ (seriously), the breakbeat-driven dance mix stomps through the undergrowth, acidic arps and pan flutes fizzing across the forest canopy. Heels & Souls pass the baton to London’s Good Block for the home stretch, the tropical twosome reworking the bassline and sprinkling some synth wizardry for a remix that grooves off over the horizon. 

These hard-to-find, pricey gems have been fully licensed from the trio, with weighty remasters courtesy of Cicely Balston. 20% of profits from Heels & Souls Recordings and Prime Direct Distribution will be donated to Papyrus, a UK charity dedicated to the prevention of young suicide.
