Channeling the techniques of krautrock and ambient music greats, Austin-based experimental artist Michael C. Sharp is back with a new full-length odyssey entitled Synth Vehicles for Guitar. This collection of multi-layered motifs hypnotically unfolds in a series of complementary movements, creating a holistic record that plays as one awe-inspiring piece. From syncopated, beat-driven tracks to washed out soundscapes, the album’s electronic-tinged themes are cohesively carried throughout the mood variations with narrative finesse. As Sharp’s prolific output of loop-based synth and guitar explorations continue to evolve, this multi-instrumentalist and founding member of cosmic ensemble Sungod continues to churn out some of the best in modern psychedelia.

Grinding his way up the ranks of the American underground electronic scene, Los Angeles native and Austin resident José Cota makes his long awaited solo debut as SSLEEPERHOLD. Cota is best known for his work as a member of the now defunct Medio Mutante, whose 2008 12" Inestable (released on Minimal Wave sub label Cititrax), gave the band a well deserved cult following. Medio's contemporary take on classic minimal synth music through the use of analog hardware became a powerful and bold statement amidst the modern resurgence of electronic music. Now as a solo artist, SSLEEPERHOLD introduces a fresh and heavy approach to synth based composition. Ruleth proclaims its unique voice through immense bass lines and brutal percussion punctuated by invasions of tape manipulation and the sounds of buckling steel.

After the dust had settled from the dissipation of Medio Mutante, Cota was left to collect himself artistically. SSLEEPERHOLD is the result of a distinct effort to establish a new plateau of inward focus and expression. Drawing on a variety of genres, Ruleth makes an instant connection to dark wave, industrial, and 80's horror scores, but the contemporary forces at work make it difficult to describe the album in such "vintage" terms. Slow and aggressive, Ruleth finds Cota exploring half-time swing rhythms, heavy metal breakdowns, and growling oscillators that creep ever so slightly in and out of tune. Filters gradually pry open to mimic guitar riffs chugging along in drop-D syncopation with the bass lines, while double-pedal kick drums deliver skull pounding accents over complex synth sequences. Busy "dirty south" style high-hat phrasing along with cassette collage and television-static also make up a significant part of the distinct SSLEEPERHOLD lexicon. This is undoubtedly electronic dance music, but one could just as easily be tempted to head bang or free-style.

Ruleth is designed to officially announce the arrival of SSLEEPERHOLD, however this LP also represents overcoming the challenges of going solo and the redemption of finding an authentic style that is both personal and compelling. Leaving behind the baggage of the past, there is a tangible sense of rage and relief, but anger-release-therapy is only part of the story. Besides delivering a healthy dose of destruction, Ruleth proudly displays the fruits of Cota's own intrapersonal endeavors and the culmination of efforts to come into one's own. As the title implies, conquering the darkness within is the one true path to emancipation.

Few modern producers manage to assemble a premiere at the caliber of Austin native Dylan Cameron's debut LP, Infinite Floor. Sophisticated and nuanced, Cameron’s debut album interweaves a spectrum of electronic subgenres, moving seamlessly from abstract drum and bass into screwed four on the floor and ambient 2 step rhythms. Sharply honed samples, intricately layered drum beats, and crafted analog synth tones are churned through a host of studio hardware, allowing sound design and composition to be Infinite Floor's focal point and unifying theme. The effortless procession of songs subversively cycles forward, unfolding a continuous and cohesive narrative that leaves the best moments often fleeting and ripe for repeat listens. The son of two lifetime garage-psych and noise musicians, Dylan was heavily exposed to Austin's dense concentration of underground art and music from an early age. With a background in hip-hop production, heavy metal drumming, studio engineering and club DJ-ing, Dylan has always been profoundly dedicated to mastering his craft. This rich variety of experience has conditioned Cameron to possess a virtuoso level of technical proficiency, with a vast array of musical knowledge and influences. From the driving house beats on "In Pain" and "Difficult Floor" to the experimental allusions to IDM in songs like "Nebula" and the album's title track, Cameron executes each piece with the artistry and finesse of a seasoned veteran. Measured bits of live synth and guitar add an organic balance to contrast the processed vocal stabs and earth shaking sub-bass, while tape delay and samples of vinyl crackling reveal Cameron's ingrained penchant for dub and hip-hop. 

Working as the in-house producer and engineer for Holodeck Records on top of a host of freelance work, Dylan's contribution to Austin's electronic and experimental scene is far reaching and highly regarded. The anticipation for a Dylan Cameron full length has been burgeoning since the release of his double mixtape Samsara: Causes and Conditions and further heightened by his reputation for stunning live hardware sets. As one of the last records mastered by the illustrious Mark Richardson at Prairie Cat studios in Chicago, Infinite Floor has outstanding definition and high-end clarity but maintains a booming low end that lends itself to any sound system. 

The re-emergence of live electronic performances and underground dance culture in Austin makes Infinite Floor a timely addition to one of the music industry's pivotal epicenters. Back in stock, the 2012 debut full-length from Austin-based electronic quartet S U R V I V E is available once again with yellow and black alternate artwork. A fresh U.S. repress is in high demand for this modern classic, as the band enjoys a recent surge in notoriety on the heels of members Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein’s soundtrack work on the hit Netflix series Stranger Things. Recorded from 2010-2012 at the band’s own Omniverse Studios in Austin, this record chronicles the early days of the group as they developed and defined their familiar yet original style of dark soundscapes. 

This record’s full spectrum of synth-based composition returns to LP and cassette, with CD and limited clear and black-colored vinyl editions available for the first time. S U R V I V E ’ s debut full-length marks the culmination of countless sessions recording and crafting a remarkable balance of songwriting and experimentation. The band’s signature sound is a combination of vintage and modern synthesizers, recorded live and carefully processed to draw character out of every enriched sound wave before joining the mix.

S U R V I V E ’ s premiere is a fusion of reserved minimalism and lucid hooks.
