The recent album by Roman Angelos "Music for Underwater Supermarkets" released in 2022 by Happy Robots, paints a sonic dreamscape where the mundane act of grocery shopping meets the future. “Music for Underwater Supermarkets” continues and extends Roman's obsession with library and soundtrack music of the past, fusing that aesthetic with childhood memories of being pushed around in shopping carts and visiting strip malls. Vibraphones chime alongside woodwinds and vintage synthesizers, creating an immersive sound that feels exotic and smooth.

This new single "The Aimless Aquanaut" picks up and develops one of the lush ambient breaks featured in "Music For Underwater Supermarkets". Roman Angelos’ extended version draws upon the influence of Steve Reich and kosmische music, bringing the listener into a state of suspended meditation. It is both meditative and reflective, and could as easily soundtrack one of the more contemplative moments in an episode of 'Stranger Things' as well as soundtrack your next visit to a spa retreat.

The Riptide and Rumble remix by producer/engineer Scott Solter is a preview of his upcoming full remix album of “Music For Underwater Supermarkets”. Solter weaves in darker ambience, with hints of early industrial, while still maintaining the aquatic feeling of the song, making for something soothing and spine-tingling. Solter’s full remix album “Supermarkets, Underwater” will be available in Spring 2023 on Happy Robots Records

We are thrilled that HOLOGRAM TEEN has returned to Happy Robots with her new single; a full six years and two albums since her last full release for the label.

Hologram Teen is the solo project (and anagram) of former STEREOLAB keyboardist Morgane Lhote.

Her colourful playful electronic instrumentals are heavily influenced by horror soundtracks, Italian disco and hip-hop.

Initially from Paris, Morgane moved to London when she was 20, spent nearly 20 years in New York city before moving to LA where she concentrated on her solo material. Her most recent album ‘Day-Glo Chaos’ released on Ransom Note Records was an unashamed nostalgic musical love letter to the 1980’s mixing cinematic strings, French Pop, video game soundtracks, a dash of drum and bass and vocoder vocals.

Her new single for Happy Robots is a double A-side.

A side “The Restless Cyclops” layered with synth strings, electric piano and bell sounds, is impossible to pigeonhole, it’s full spectrum pop-music that we can only describe as ‘restless disco’. And flip over the disc to the AA side ‘Hologram Twang!’ and Morgane introduces flourishes from another genre she loves; country music. Atmospheric washes combine with synth chimes and electronic slide-guitar. This could almost be the soundtrack to the opening of the pearly gates for another country legend, to be at eternal peace from perpetual heartache.

Rodney Cromwell returns just weeks after the release of his last single ‘The Winter Palace’ with a new song released for the Christmas season. ‘Cold Christmas’ was written for the annual ‘A Very Cherry Christmas’ compilation from Cherryade Records, and is released on its own right as a digital single on 9th December via Happy Robots.

This is no Cliff Richard Christmas hit though. A relentless krautrock beat propels a driving synth bass line, layered with Cromwell’s signature ARP synth strings and a thumping bass guitar. It is the most knowingly gothic song that Cromwell has released to date. 
  
As the UK descends into another round of austerity, the lyrics of ‘Cold Christmas’ are like ‘Eleanor Rigby’ turbo-charged for 2022. “Julie wanted a Xmas tree, until she fell into poverty, the house is cold and the lights are off, and now she’s getting a nasty cough”. 

‘Cold Christmas’ was recorded in Cromwell’s home studio in Catford, London and was produced by Dom Cresswell at Studio AUW in Kent.  

Since the release of his debut 'Age of Anxiety' album, Rodney Cromwell has been featured by the likes of NME, Electronic Sound, Huffington Post, Paste, Shindig!, Louder Than War, The Big Takeover, Magic RPM and the Bandcamp homepage. He’s had national radio play in Japan, Finland, Germany and multiple spins on RTE in Ireland, on BBC 6 Music in the UK and RNE3 in Spain for whom he recorded a live session.

The Rodney Cromwell live set is a joyful mixed-media extravaganza, incorporating analogue synths, video visuals and live instrumentation, interjected by Rodney’s 'offbeat wit'' (NME). His debut festival appearance at Indietracks was described as 'like a spiritual experience". He has shared stages with acts including A Flock of Seagulls, Pram, Death & Vanilla, Marsheaux, Rowetta, M!R!M, Damo Suzuki and Steve Davis. In 2022 he recorded a live session for Electronic Sound and in the autumn played a series of dates with Blancmange.

Following up on his LP “Music For Underwater Supermarkets”, Roman Angelos now presents “Supermarkets, Underwater,” a fully reimagined remix of the original album from producer/engineer Scott Solter. Solter flips the script,  taking the bouncy and upbeat material of the original album and creating a darker and more ambient landscape.  Weaving in noise and shifting electronic percussion, Solter creates an entirely new record. Listeners dive deeper into unknown waters, no longer shopping alongside the friendly fish. 

Lead track “Swimming Through The Aisles (Teeming Mix)” uses the same irregular time signature and feel of the original, but adds in tremoloed vibraphones, reverse guitars, and electronic drums, giving the music a new feel of exploration.

On "Abyssal Plain (Backmasking Mix)", Solter uses tape manipulation and loops, audio filters, and damaged devices to take one small section of the song and enlarge it into its own unique world.

Roman Angelos is the project of Brooklyn producer Rich Bennett. Roman was invented as a vehicle for Bennett to explore his obsession with library recordings of the 60's and 70s, muzak and exotica. Bennett has also been involved in a diverse group of musical projects, including the newly reunited outsider/60s proto-punk group The Shaggs, dream-pop band Mahogany, and Brazilian funk group Limoncello.

ROMAN ANGELOS: Swimming Through The Aisles (Teeming Mix)

At Slingshot 2015, a multi-disciplinary celebration of the arts in Athens, Georgia, Moog Music presented a unique synth-building workshop.  Led by Moog Engineer Chris Howe, Slingshot attendees learned the fundamentals of synthesis from the ground up by building their own Werkstatt-Ø1. The Moog Werkstatt-Ø1 is an analog synthesizer kit that anyone can assemble regardless of experience.  

The 12 workshop attendees utilized their newly built synthesizer to craft their own personal drone patch. Later that evening, Alpha Pup recording artist Nosaj Thing took control of all 12 synthesizers, adding and subtracting their signals in a long-form drone performance that kicked off the evening's musical programming. The improvised result was an ever-shifting and complex soundscape overwhelming in its deep, textural, hi-fidelity richness for those in attendance.

Experiment with stacking and layering them to create your own shifting palettes, run them through filters and compressors, or use them as background textures to lay other sonic components on top of. 

However you choose to use them, experimenting and learning will reward you with a lifetime of rich synthesizer experiences.

Her love for music first leads Agnès AOKKY to radio Nova where she dicusses culture and counter-culture as a chronicler-host for « Le Grand Mix Week-End » along with Gilles Peterson's World Wide. Nowadays, she mixes in every sense of the word as an author, performer and DJ. Inspired by Rimbaud's stream, she superimposes poems and electronica / braindance sounds. She works with underground producers such as Maxime Komori and Computer Truck by her side. Its first track « Les Poissons-Chats » is rather an intimate and acoustic ditty which tells the story of the time spent in the shifting sands of drunken times. For a touch of added electro, Hologram Teen's synthesizers – keyboarder for Stereolab from 1995 to 2001 – are all the rage in the psychedelic/disco/dub remix. As for the aesthetics, Agnès AOKKY went for The Bow aka Markus Hofko, whose talent was already confirmed in several music videos for artists such as Flying Lotus, KOKOKO!, Débruit and The Gaslamp Killer. Starting from a Ying-Ju Lu portrait, he splashes the photograph with sometimes shimmering, sometimes cold colors.
