79.5 is the sound of New York City. The Brooklyn-based band presents their forthcoming self-titled album on Razor-N-Tape.

Soulful and psychedelic, the collection’s masterful melodies may be hard to categorize, from 70’s underground disco to acid jazz to sugary sweet pop. Its very existence is a protest of the old boy’s club in the music industry. And, a personal triumph against all odds, while illuminating the most beautiful collaboration between friends.

79.5 is singer, songwriter and composer Kate Mattison, singer and rapper Lola Adanna, drummer Caito Sanchez (Charles Bradley, Lee Fields), bassist Andrew Raposo (Midnight Magic, Hess Is More) and sax player + flautist Izaak Mills.

79.5 - As I Wait 4 Your Love

After stepping out as a solo artist with her debut single Marigold, Holysseus Fly vocalist, co-writer and pianist from critically acclaimed Ishmael Ensemble drops her second single Within The Water.   She wrote the song in a few days from an improvised session with Jay-Z sampled Bristol pianist, James Graham. She sampled and then looped a section of the session and wrote a powerful vocal about rebirth into self love. Holysseus Fly’s strong vocal boldly tells a story of hope against a backdrop of watery piano textures. 

Words from Holysseus:  
“I was having a recurring dream that my mouth was full of grit. At the time I was struggling with my emotions after treatment for cancer, not speaking about them. Keeping them to myself. I wrote this song as part of my rebirth. A declaration of my determination to love myself and to speak my truth. The repeating lyric “loving you has been my greatest fear” is an admission that I needed to accept and voice these feelings in order to move forward.

Similarly “I hope one day we will turn around, see what it made of me”, is my intention to look back with pride at how my cancer journey has made me who I am. I had to dig deep and confront these difficult feelings to arise from the depths of the ocean and float in the water.”

Within The Water

'Red Valley' refers to the Welsh who left their homes between 1936 and 1939 to fight in the Spanish civil war against Franco and the rise of facism. Bennett says, "It's just my little nod to the humble people who saw themselves as global citizens and the responsibility that comes with that, and that their individual actions truly mattered".

The track, which opens with guitars and stomping feet, slips effortlessly into a gorgeous groove of dusty guitars and grumbling organs, all underpinned by Huw's simple but affecting bass work.

From a Japansploitation thriler made in 1970 with plenty of guns, gals, guys and sharpsuited action and gallons of studio blood! Mostly freeform blowing by the Legend that is Terumasa Hino for the soundtrack, one of the exceptions being this Blue Note Styled Soul Jazz number that  sounds as if it came off the Van Gelder production line circa '68 to '71. Easily could be mistaken for Blue Mitchell, Donald Byrd or Freddie Hubbard's outputs post soul,  pre-electric happenings. Another Jazz Room thing of beauty!
