At Once

The train beasts rise again! Close up and distant recordings of freight trains passing through the beautiful spaces of North Idaho. Distant train horns echoing in the night and huge pulsing engines pulling heavy cargo along the rusty tracks make up this collection of trains to compliment the original North County Trains sound library released in 2011.

Five years ago I spent the entire year running around the county recording trains. The result of my efforts was North Country Trains which I released in late 2011. I learned a lot about the best places to record and the best times of the year. Along with nearly being arrested I spent countless hours sitting and waiting in locations ranging from wide open fields to dense forests to the local train depot. For this collection I used that experience and knowledge to record even more of the massive diesel beasts as they rumbled through the area without waiting forever to capture the moment.

I learned that with all the trains (70+) that pass through here everyday, there is a certain pattern to the criss crossing madness. I would listen and wait for the times when I heard lots of trains from the south which meant trains from the North were waiting patiently before crossing the lake. Just one set of tracks cross the lake and a bottleneck is almost daily. Other trains come from the West on a separate rail system and they have to wait also. When they get the go ahead the North South trains are waiting. These “stop and go” train situations create the perfect opportunity to get slack take-up metal impacts along with slow starts and passes.

One of the aspects of train sounds that I love the most around here is the way that the horn echoes and bounces between the valleys and the mountain ranges. On a quiet day or evening it’s a stunning sound and can go on for what seems like forever. Another is the way the wheels scrape and squeal against the rails when a train is on a curved set of tracks. It can be abrasive and yet at times it’s strangely musical.

3 QUESTIONS to NøLAH:

Q: Going through your mix shows a lot of tracks which are classic but not that old yet. When and how did you start making music?

A: Since childhood I have been in the world of music, although with different styles. It was not until the last year of university that I began to be interested in the musical production in the studio and not just to play. I started to make Electronic Music about 3 years ago, although when I started I didn't have very defined the style that I do now. I have always liked different styles of music and since I started until I defined my sound, it’s been about a year.
 
Q: As you’re playing live only, how did you get started to do so? Where did the interest come from to play with hardware and not only to DJ?

A: Yes, currently I only play live and I started almost at the same time that I started producing. I was very clear that the music I wanted to do I wanted to play it, in fact the composition of the music I make it thinking about the live, I usually play a lot until I get the main idea. Both, the production of Electronic Music and live have always been together, I have never imagined producing if I can play my productions, I suppose it is because I have always played in bands and did not contemplate the fact of not playing.
 
Q: Which projects are coming soon and where do we see and hear you playing live next?
 
A: Now I’m working on my next EP, perfecting my sound and my style with new instruments and sounds. My next live dates are in October, I will do a tour of India on the 18th in Delhi, 19 Mumbai and 20 Bangalore. I am very happy with all this.
