This is a tune about being "part of the fray." The pic is a photo clip from a video taken by my dear friend Sean Kenneally, who initiated the open mic at The Irish Village in Boston in 2023 in the tradition of the one his best buddy and our mutual friend, the late beloved Hugh McGowan (1970-2021), hosted at The Burren in Somerville.

Without Holding a Place

The purpose of life’s to live it, smile at the faces through the dark,
Feel the warmth in the room,
Joy like a shimmering sun,
Sound brings us together, and laughter’s part of the fun.

C’mon join the dance … It just is,
It’s not an argument,
A place to be, 
Without holding a place.

A gathering’s full of random happenings, the antithesis of a black hole,
You see the leaves in the window,
Lit by the flickering light,
Passing strangers, hear the music, come inside.

When younger we define ourselves by differentiating.
As we age, we look for things in common,
Because creating drama is just maudlin.

It’s good to be part of the fray, we don’t need to stand out. 
Life is participation,
No need for assertive definition,
The energy radiates, and you’re invited to play.
