Guy Contact is the alias of Perth-based producer and rising star Callum Chute.  Specialising in his own contemporary brand of hardware-focused progressive house, Guy Contact has been hard at work refining his sound since his EP ‘Liminal Space’ dropped on Butter Sessions nearing the end of 2019. The result is a unique and unquestionably cohesive sound palette of pulsating grooves, trance-like overtones and blissful pads - all wrapped up and raring to energise any dancefloor. Following a run of stand out 12” EPs on the likes of Coymix Ltd, Haws Music and Craigie Knowes, Guy Contact is also plotting a follow up release on Butter Sessions due by the end of the year. With quality output to boot in 2021, Guy Contact is commanding the attention of local and global audiences - evidenced also by recent and inspiring contributions to both esteemed Amsterdam based Oddysee mix series and home grown stalwart series Melbourne Deepcast. On Saturday, Karla Böhm provided a top drawer warm-up set at the No One Is An Island stage. Confidently bringing her signature afterhours sound, she made it hard to grasp whether you entered a club that had just opened or were lost in a hazy warehouse in which a bunch of dedicated dancers had already been going for a day or two.

Gay Haze's finest Fais Le Beau & Vieira at Horst Arts & Music 2021 was nothing short of pure delight: a haze filled room, high beats per minute and lots, lots of sweat. Effortlessly raising the energy to unseen levels, the duo proved why they’re the widely celebrated faces of one of Brussels’ most iconic queer parties.

On the final Festival day, a flock of inquisitive listeners gathered early at Rotor’s Unglued stage. They were all ears for ‘Searching For The Body’, a Horst initiated talk in collaboration with KU Leuven.

The core of ‘Searching For The Body’ revolved from the notion (and urgency) of nightlife for societal health as well as human interaction. Despite having to miss it for a sometimes unbearably long period of time, its absence did seem to trigger a lot of reflection, new initiatives and creativity. 

We invited Serbian/Dutch artist, researcher and curator Bogomir Doringer who is doing an Artistic Research PhD at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, and the by Beyoncé-approved choreographer & dancer Nick Coutsier. They are joined by ’Flying On The Raven’s Wing’ Exhibition participating artist Daan Gielis and Canadian/Polish coreographer and performer Ula Sickle, who is currently a PhD researcher at KU Leuven.

The four, all coming from different backgrounds, were brought together by curator Evelyn Simons to reflect about their own practices while relating their research to the subject matter of the talk.

Six years, fifty releases, countless artists and multiple subsidiaries; the Oyster Cult’s reach extends far beyond what sceptics once thought possible. It’s only fitting, then, that we gather some of our finest under the Kalahari banner in celebration.

The anniversary release is upon us. Six whole years since Jacy helped inaugurate the label with a spin on Midwestern house, OYSTER40 signals a landmark occasion. 18 tracks, quadruple vinyl boxset action, and in true Oyster Cult tradition, it comes bearing pearls.

Dancefloor squarely in focus, the Cult assembles on a compilation spanning alumni and new inductees alike. It’s an assemblage of the fractal, explorative and ritual-ready; at once a focused distillation of the Kalahari sound and celebration of its many acolytes. Big on atmosphere, heavy on groove, we delve deeply into the musical DNA shared by all who grace the label.

Tough, direct cuts (Sansibar, Roza Terenzi, Big Zen, Maara & Priori) to the pristine and widescreen (S.O.N.S., Volodymyr Gnatenko, Adam Pits), this is all quintessentially Kalahari. Elsewhere though, the likes of D. Tiffany and SW. journey further into realms of abstraction: the former opting for hi-tech, dreamstate IDM, while the SUED co-founder dissolves a house template into dubby introspection.

Calling upon contemporary talents, for the most part, there are also exceptions. Raymond Castoldi - the one-time house producer best known as Madison Square Garden’s music director - returns with an unreleased nugget from ’91, while an ‘Aliens’-sampling track from Detroit-indebted techno outfit Syzygy gets the reissue treatment.

We got our hands on this recording from Bristol's Remotif. It was taken when he played in Manila earlier this year, and we're told it's a similar vibe to his show at Warning last time - which means you're in for some out-of-this-world techy trancy excellency, with a healthy dose of drum and bass at the end for good measure. Buckle up for a three-hour journey into the depths, the perfect soundtrack for dropping a few tabs on a country road Sunday ride.
