3 QUESTIONS to JOYCE MUNIZ:

Q: Let's talk about your mix and your roots. How did you find your way to Eelectronic Music and what do the tracks in your mix mean to you today?

A: My interest in Electronic Music was actually sparked by MTV. Back in the mid-1990s, MTV was really cool and had great music from artists like Massive Attack, Björk, Aphex Twin, Roni Size, Rage Against The Machine and many more. So music was very important to me from an early age and I heard my way through different genres. At the age of 15 I got interested in parties and raves because all my cousins ​​were older and always told great stories. I was really upset that I wasn't allowed to come with them, but when I turned 16, my mom finally allowed me to go with them. My first rave was a drum & bass / jungle party in what was then known as the Artwork Club in Vienna. It was a cool underground location on the fourth floor of a warehouse. Since that night my life has changed completely. I thought everything was mega, the sound, the bass in my stomach, the energy from the DJs and the people around me, the flickering light. I didn't know any of the numbers the DJs played and still found them so cool that I bought their mixtapes and listened to them all the time. [...] And the mix for HOW I MET THE BASS brings me back to that time, how flashed I was from the bass, what a great time it was. Good memories!

Q: Corona took us all off the grid in March 2020. It's been over a year since then in which we all try to stay afloat. How did you experience the time
and can use it for you?

A: It was a shock at the beginning, of course. But I was able to focus on other things very quickly and spend more time in the studio or develop new projects together with Radio FM4. I've been resident there for a long time and finally had more time to take part in other shows like FM4 Unlimited. I wanted to do professional speaker training through my radio shows for a long time, but the time was never there because of my old lifestyle. Now I'm actually in the second semester and it's a lot of fun! I also spent a lot of time with my family, we have grown apart a lot in recent years and it was important and also a good time to deal with such things. In terms of finance, it is of course a difficult thing, but the crisis made me realize that I can do a lot more than produce my club tracks and play in clubs on weekends. I reinvented myself and today I make music for commercials, films and various art projects. These are things that I have never done before. I was always very much oriented towards music for the clubs, but this way new doors have opened and I am very grateful for that. Still, I can't wait to go on tour again, be around people, play music, travel and visit my friends and family in Brazil again allowed to.

Q: The last time you had a new release on Exploited was "Crystalline". What are you currently working on and what can we expect from you in 2021?

A: Exactly, “Crystalline” came out on Exploited in early February and this track means a lot to me because that was the first tune I made during the first lockdown. I am very happy that “Crystalline” has made so many friends. As I said, I worked a lot in the studio, last week my remix for the great Bossa Nova star Bebel Gilberto came out on Pias. I also made a remix for the talented singer and songwriter from Berlin, Joplyn. In August, dear producer Alinka and I will be collaborating on Permanent Vacation. There should also be another EP on Pets Recordings. But my most important project for 2021 is to finish producing my second album! I'm in the middle of it right now and that takes a lot of time and patience, because this album should tell my musical career and it will be a fine mixture of different tempos and styles. Some cool features will also be there. I'm really looking forward to it when it's finished.

Patrice Bäumel, DJ and producer based in Amsterdam, Netherlands. 

Patrice Bäumel s'est frayé un chemin unique dans le monde techno européen et mondial. Il est le producteur en tête des charts Beatport et le DJ international de premier plan, qui peut s'intégrer confortablement à la distribution stellaire des compilateurs/mixeurs Global Underground. Il est un héros dans sa ville d'adoption d'Amsterdam pour la résidence au club bien-aimé de Trouw où il s'est fait un nom. Ses sorties sur des labels phares comme Kompakt, Get Physical et Watergate font régulièrement la bande originale de scènes sauvages d'Ipanema à Ibiza. Mais il n'est pas un DJ/producteur générique, pas de loin.

Patrice Bäumel has carved a unique path through the European and global techno world. He's the Beatport chart topping producer and international top flight DJ, who can comfortably fit in with the stellar cast of Global Underground compilers/mixers. He's a hero in his adopted hometown of Amsterdam for the residency at the musch beloved Trouw club where he made his name. His releases on lynchpin labels like Kompakt, Get Physical and Watergate consistently soundtrack wild scenes from Ipanema to Ibiza. But he is no generic DJ/producer, not by a long shot.

The first hour of this month's show features a one hour deep techno mix from myself including new tracks and remixes from Matrixxmann, Monoloc, Deetron, Locked Groove, Skudge, Benjamin Damage and more.

The second hour I am happy to present an exclusive mix from special guest and minimal house heavyweight, Butane. Andrew is an American producer based out of San Francisco and currently the owner of Alphahouse and the co-curator of Little Helpers. Little Helpers is THE go-to DJ tool label and earned itself the #13 slot for most charted labels in 2015 on Resident Advisor. He has also released on many other imprints such as Crosstown Rebels, Foundsound and Dumb Unit. Additionally he has Dj'd alongside artists such as Ricardo Villalobos, Dandy Jack, Heartthrob, Skudge and many more, and is most famous for his amazing after-hour sets and underground sound.

Ahead of the 2nd chapter of Sphere at Magazine on February 22nd, we welcome Egyptian-born and Barcelona based DJ and Producer Raxon for the 128th instalment of our LWE Mix Series. Bypassing the career trajectory that is routine for many of his contemporaries, Raxon has built his success through his own brand of melodic rolling techno and perseverance. Pushing the envelope in the techno scene with what many may call an unconventional spectrum of sounds, Raxon's productions have been picked up by some of the most renowned labels out there, such as Ellum, Cocoon, Diynamic, and Kompakt.

Raxon's very own quirky soundscapes are prevalent throughout the mix, as effervescing textures, steezy percussions, and rolling basslines bubble in and out at the right times, once again proving why the Middle Eastern artist is considered a boundary-breaker and one not to miss at Sphere 002 on February 22nd.

Maurizio  Schmitz  drives  his  own  bus,  dividing  his  diary  effortlessly  between  work  and play and playing.
Half Italian, half German and his is a dizzying ongoing musical journey that flies economy and business all at the same time. Maurizio exploits these contrasts, wearing pinstripes or pyjamas or both - he jams.
We are talking about psychedelic house here. Socks off and sensual. It works on the big stage, it works in the club and it washes all over an after hour. This sound did not happen by accident.
In  1990  scrambling  around  some  old  Thorens  decks  in  a  club  his mother worked  in Maurizio  was  scooping  up  all  the  vinyl  lost  from  the  night  before – the  first  Schmitz mixtapes (which actually were not mixed) saw the light of day at this time. Many were to follow  and  these valuable  suckers  live  amongst  11,000  pieces  of  vinyl  collected and stroked over the years. 
When German techno was dynamite, changing the rules and ushering in a whole new world of electronic music Maurizio was not only there – he was smack in the middle of it. 
Bonn,  Hamburg,  Frankfurt,  Munich.  From  the  infamous  “Labor”  club  to  a 10  years residency at 'FrequenzBerater' to Frankfurt and “U60311”. Many many more but maybe two things stand out and tell you more. Spaldingstreet 43 in Hamburg, the original flat sharing rave. Maurizio presided over 7 years of lovely madness. Today you could create a major art/music festival just from the people who crashed out on the sofas there. Then the tour de force. His very own Mauromusica night founded in Bonn 2004 in the beautiful “Rheingarten”. An octagon shaped glass pavilion. Promoter, resident DJ and mum on the door. Another 10 years.
No need to name names, somewhere in the above paragraph they all passed through.
Perhaps one name, because here comes the other Maurizio Schmitz. 
In a 1994 after hour set in Munich, “Pulvertum” it was called, the raver Maurizio noticed Sven Vath 2 metres high in a tree mid set. You don’t forget stuff like that.
Their paths were never going to stop crossing. 
Event  manager,  promoter,  booker  and  for  some  time  now  the  right  hand  man  and frequent support act for the immortal legendary magician Sven Vath. It is a relationship that is not stopping any time soon.
So,  to  summarise, Sicilan  passion  met  German  techno  and  spat out  the  Dj Maurizio Schmitz.

Que faites-vous de votre temps libre ?
Eh bien, après mon travail de jour, je rentre le plus souvent à la maison, m'assoir, me détendre et profiter d'un moment pour soi, à soi… Puis selon l’envie, j'allume le son, internet ou autre… Tranquille. J'aime aussi sortir ‘parfois’ restau, pub, ciné, concert en tout genre, club…  Il m’arrive aussi de recevoir mes potes légèrement intoxiqués de whisky et de bières comme moi… Mais bien sûr, comme n'importe quel autre DJ, beaucoup de mon temps est consacré à cette quête sans fin d'une bonne nouvelle musique. HD

What do you do in your free time?
Well, after my day job, I come home most often, sit down, relax and enjoy a moment for myself ... Then according to the desire... I turn on the sound, internet or other ... Cool. I also like going out 'by faith' eatery, pub, cinema, concert of all kinds, club ... I also happen to receive my friends slightly intoxicated with whiskey and beer like me ... But of course, like any what other DJ, a lot of my time is spent on this endless quest for good new music. HD

¿Qué haces en tu tiempo libre?
Bueno, después de mi trabajo diario, llego a casa con mayor frecuencia, me siento, me relajo y disfruto un momento para mí, para mí ... Luego, según el deseo, enciendo el sonido, internet o otro ... tranquilo. También me gusta salir a veces a restaurantes, pubs, cines, conciertos de todo tipo, clubes ... También recibo a mis amigos un poco intoxicados con whisky y cerveza como yo ... Pero, por supuesto, como cualquier otro DJ, paso mucho tiempo en esta búsqueda interminable de buena música nueva. HD
