For the next few weeks, we'll be kicking off the Hot Mass podcast series with sets from all of our residents, starting with recordings from the recent Hot Mass x Berlin party at Ohm Berlin. @Boo-Lean, a driving force in Pittsburgh’s music and art scenes, is co-founder of the VIA festival as well as the girlFx crew. @p_areidolia has been posted up by your favorite front left speaker for years. Despite a deep catalogue and knowledge of music and a well-loved stint of parties in San Francisco as @noctuarysf (alongside @kudeki), she held off on DJing herself, keeping her focus on elevating the gender-marginalized artists around her. Over the last year, she's started investing more of her energy into ambient sets with an immersive, underwater quality reminiscent of our favorite ambient rooms.

"This was recorded on a Pioneer XDJ RR at an annual gathering of a small group of friends, where we hike approximately 10 miles and bring sound to the 5,000’ summit of a mountain above Los Angeles overnight.

I had never used this controller before - I have a much simpler one at home, but it went fairly well after one practice session beforehand. The small group involved with this fully commits to pitching in to make it happen, leaving no trace (with some added extra precautions this year given the circumstances), and really being fully invested in the experience.

I had not socialized IRL with more than a couple of people since the beginning of March outside of protesting and wanted to create a gently joyful and psychedelic experience under the stars, as well as play music in a way that made sense between the friends who played before and after me. Nearly everyone in the group is a DJ, producer, or at least a self-confessed music nerd, so it’s both thrilling and terrifying to play for them in such a small and deeply intentional group.

It is easily one of the most physically taxing things I’ve ever been involved in, but also one of the most rewarding. I say every time, “I’m not sure I can do this again” and keep coming back for a little suffering with my ambient music....seeing the endless glittering lights of the city below, near-complete silence in high desert nature, and the sun rise through a colorful layer of smog, smoke particles, and thin air makes it thoroughly worthwhile."

Taylor Bratches (she/they) seeks to explore and transmit an emotional experience through sound. Her sets aim to fuse genres and find hybrid spaces, by blending acid, electro, DnB, jungle, broken techno, IDM, bass and more. She aims to move people physically and spiritually, creating a dance floor experience that is both terrestrial and extraterrestrial. 

This mix, recorded for the most recent Acid Camp live stream, came out of a need to express and experience catharsis, and to connect with the body. They used this opportunity to showcase their current obsessions, leaning heavily into leftfield spaces, dubstep and various styles of bass music.

Our next Signals comes from Ali Berger. Originally from central New Jersey, spending formative time in Boston  and honing his craft while living in Detroit,  current resident and contributor to the ever growing community in Pittsburg.  As a DJ, producer he explores the spaces between distorted drum machine improvisations, synth-heavy techno trips, and warm mechanized funk. 

With an ever growing catalog and a new imprint Trackland.  2020 may have been a hiatus year for most,  Ali's made the best of it with a plenty of gems added to his catalog. Which he is uploading to the Trackland Bandcamp every 2-3 weeks.
