First up is Berlin-local Ruede Hagelstein with his atmospherically charged remix, taking the tone down just a bit giving the track multiple uses, from home-listening to mid-morning afterhour sets. Next up is DJ. T. who takes the energy up again with his remix. Heavy percussion and a solid bassline-drive give new meaning to the beloved classic. House legend DJ Pierre also tries his hand, keeping much of the original spirit intact, while modernizing and tweaking just enough to get to most out of it. Over the course of the last couple of years I have begun to hear more breakbeats naturally appear in the new music I like. For example I have been playing a lot of tracks by the likes of Special Request, Ejeca, Warung, DJ Haus. They make breakbeats from right across a range of sounds from the really old school rave style through to new interpretations of jungle or more mid-tempo vibes which were more melodic and trance like. I mentioned previously how lockdown has given me the chance to explore my own record collection, especially a lot of the progressive sounds that were big in the 90s. Falling back in love with those sounds reminded me of the fluidity and variety you find in breakbeats and this gave me lots of production ideas. Somehow it feels more free and I am able to be more adventurous than the typical 4/4 techno and house template. That’s what gave me the confidence to  explore these new breakbeat styles and reach out to Soultrain who is such a legend in the reggae and drum & bass scenes. It was a lot of fun working with a vocalist for a change and in this case in particular Soultrain’s vocal work made our studio sessions come alive and made the track we did come together so well.

Hotflush is a record label launched by Paul Rose aka Scuba in 2003. Its early period was spent as a central part of London's Bass Music scene which exploded in the mid 2000s, although the label has always been difficult to pigeonhole musically and recent output has focused on Techno and House.
