Houndstooth: Patterns

Bristol techno, noise and hardcore supremos SCALPING will release their latest project ‘FLOOD REMIXED’ on October 8th. The EP is an excellently curated collection of sublime remixes from some of the most prominent and intriguing musicians, producers and figureheads from across the musical spectrum. Heavyweight contributors include 2021 Mercury Prize nominees and recent number 1 album holders Mogwai as well as Laurel Halo and object blue.

‘FLOOD REMIXED’ continues the stellar trajectory of the band, who, over the past few years have become an unmissable live act and gained notoriety as one of the essential, electrifying new bands in the UK. Their recent debut EP ‘FLOOD’, their first release for the forward-thinking Houndstooth label, gained widespread acclaim including CRACK Magazine, NME, The Quietus, Loud & Quiet, Mixmag, The Line of Best Fit and many others.

Scottish post-rock icons Mogwai step up to remix ‘Cloudburst’. Stretching and expanding the track, creating new drum patterns, and continually ratcheting up the drama inherent in the original; a naturally sensational slab of post-rock.

“I loved reworking Cloudburst due to the sheer mass of lovely little (and big) noises from which I could make new drum sounds and melodies to layer over the original. This was a tune where everything was so nicely overwhelming in the beginning and somehow came together really well with a bit more chaos from my fumbling about with the buttons. SCALPING is the Bristol based group comprised of James Rushforth, Alex Hill, Isaac Jones, Jamie Thomas and visual collaborator Jason Baker, initially formed at the end of 2017 with a desire to pair their hometown's visionary, off-kilter dance music to the more organic instrumentation you might find in noise-rock and post-punk. They have since won all manner of plaudits at radio, press and through fervent word-of-mouth for both their eclecticism on record and for the pummelling intensity of their live performances.

In Wordcolour’s own words, "all the way back in January 2021, when the UK was entering its second national lockdown, I set myself the task of trying to write a club track. I wanted to avoid the lockdown temptation to write melancholic, dreamy dance music, and so found myself trying to remember what the club sounded and felt like at a time when raving was a distant memory.

The result, Bluster, continues some of the club experiments I began on my first EP "Tell Me Something", but with a beefed-up heavier sound aimed at slow, chunky techno sets. Like that first record, this track has a sense of humour - constantly cutting in playful bits of vocal and drum detail. Both the title and the artwork imply an undue swagger - a sense of winging it through changeable unpredictable weather conditions: a combination that, for me, sums up the feel of this track as well as the circumstances in which it was made."

“Squares and Triangles was a turning point for the project - the first track I finished where I felt like things were heading in the right direction. F-M-M-F’s fantastic vocals hooked me straight away. They read almost like a film, exploring the tension of a doomed relationship when incompatible edges collide, crack and crumble amongst the lies.”


On Man’s creative roots lie deep. An artist with a unique gift for sound design, he’s able to conjure perfect pop songs and then corrode them, revealing the emotional truths underneath. An electronic artist with a human touch, he’s worked in the studio for an array of other artists, as well as delivering huge cinematic soundtrack projects, all while pursuing his own solitary agenda. "Squares and Triangles" marks the first step of this personal journey and more will follow later this year.

Everything Merged Vol 1

‘Everything Merged’ is 3024’s second series of compilations featuring artists from the 3024 Mentoring Program. At the beginning of the pandemic, label owner Martyn started forming a lively online community of artists, providing them with ideas and inspiration. This community grew larger and larger, and musicians started to connect both online and offline, across continents and genres. It resulted in the “It Was Always There” series of compilations from 2021, and countless independent releases, radio appearances and gigs, putting a host of artists on the map.

Working on the program made Martyn and partner Jeroen Erosie reconsider the purpose of running a record label in 2022. ‘Are we still interested in putting out records via the usual channels?’ Or should a label become more of an umbrella for various activities by a larger community, both online and IRL, with digital and physical products, in other words merge everything into one.

“Everything Merged vol. 1” features the awesome music of a group of 3024 alumni from across the globe, interpreting the post-pandemic phase of electronic music each in their individual ways. There are the contemporary percussive meditations of Adam 2, Solair, Klont and Brooklynite No Sir, the 90s garage and rave inspired music of Karis, Agôn, Slovenia’s Hatterri and Noise Casino from Colombia. The exuberant technicolorist bangers of Guava, Blu-e and Cress and the deep hypnotic explorations of India’s Chhabb, MarceauxMarceaux and The Exhausted.

Tapefeed, the Italian duo that holds a residency at our iconic London night club fabric, join us here at Houndstooth with Anterograde, their debut release on the label with a five track techno / experimental EP due out December 2nd.

Travelling through UK breaks touching on dub, deep experimental and techno, their inspiration roots in the types of sets they have been consistently laying down at fabric.

Together with an accumulation of releases on labels Mord, Metempsychosis and Abyss, in 2021 Tapefeed launched their imprint “Inveterate” to focus on the duo’s vision.

Following notable releases on Editions Mego as Electronic music duo LCC, and multiple singles and collaborations on Nicolas Jaar’s Other People label and Modern Obscure Music, experimental electronic artist Ana Quiroga (@ana_quiroga) announces her debut album Azabache for release on 8th September via Houndstooth. Ana also shares the first single from the project ‘Wallada’ which is available now to buy digitally and stream.

A personal odyssey, shaped by Ana’s deep connection to her homeland Asturias and her experience since moving to London, underpins Azabache. From the rich Celtic heritage of Asturias – the mines, minerals, and mystical feminine energy – to the urban occultism of their now-home London and the enchanting streets of Hackney and the East End, Azabache embodies the connection between deep and highly symbolic ancestral roots and these contemporary new beginnings.

Hessle Audio welcome Laksa to the label with three tracks of rowdy and forward-thinking dance music, following his last release on Timedance in September.

On the A-side, ‘Fire Kit’ sees the London-based producer and DJ approaching his sound from a different direction, with dancehall infused percussion offset by enveloping layers of sub-bass warmth at 95bpm.
The B side jacks up the tempo with a raucous energy as the temperature drops to below freezing. Basslines rumble in ‘Belly Brocka’ and ‘T’s Tent’ like an approaching storm and snares lash through the mix like ice picks, with the broken rhythmic energy driving the dance forward in 2021 and beyond.

Running the club night and monthly NTS show ‘re:lax’ with re:ni, Laksa has been consistently pushing bass mutations since his early EPs on Beneath’s Mistry label. A Bristol bass bobbler at heart, his hybrid sound has found a home on many respected labels such as Timedance, Ilian Tape and Whities, cementing his place amongst the latest UK talent.

Just after the start of lockdown, Hodge aka Jacob Martin released his debut LP, Shadows In Blue, his first foray into the world of the long player. Gaining critical acclaim, and with clubbing on hold indefinitely, the album makes the most of that flexibility, building on his dancefloor sensibilities while making good on the experimental tendencies that have long lain just beneath the surface of his music.

Fast forward a further half year and Lockdown 2.0 is in full effect in the UK, but this time we want club bangers, a sense of release, the urge to dance. And with this, 7 producers, 6 remixes from a collective of like-minded musicians being let lose to rewire tracks with the club space in mind.

Manchester via London, DJ and producer Anz kicks things off her Hooover remix of ‘Lanes’, a bouncy rave reduction with an unremitting sense of energy.

Bristol’s Facta & K-Lone take on one of the faster cuts from the album ‘Sense Inversion’ Building on the sound they champion on their killer wisdom teeth label they turn in a melodic and hypnotic remix with a bounce perfect for opening sets.

Shanti Celeste offers a master class in groove with her club ready rework in her remix of ‘Lanacut’, while Surgeon uses his trademark big room driving sound on the album’s title track, proper 4am business.

AYA’s latest remix see’s the Manchester producer flex her production skillz with screwed kicks, next gen sound design and mind gargling synths on ‘Ghost Of Akina’. We end with New York City’s Kush Jones, who closes Remixes in Blue with lush strings with a minimalistic footwork print underneath.
