Beesmunt Soundsystem is swiftly becoming a Dutch institution… Commanding the controls at their own events in Amsterdam’s legendary Paradiso by the age of 18, David van der Leeuw and Luigi Vittorio Jansen carved their path as discerning selectors long before they established their own studio.
Emerging into the world of production in 2012, their breakthrough cuts arrived on Soweso Music and were received well across the board… “All Day”, in particular, was featured on Breach’s critically acclaimed “DJ Kicks” mix. Earlier this year their appearance on Bristol’s Just Jack has won them more friends, with “How I Wish” scoring them summer appearances across Europe. Now making their debut on Pets with three immutable examples of pristine production dynamics, their friendlist and schedule is set to develop even more. Get to know…

“Body Shape” speaks with a universal techno tongue; industrial strength beats plough and plunder with clanks and bangs while a dominant detuned synth hammers home an insistent riff that will resonate across the widest realms of house and techno. 

“Amsterdam 808” pays homage to their home city’s techno legacy and develops these dark motifs further.  Naked rim shots batter a hypnotic message into your psyche over the bubbling kick/bass combo. A series of claps builds into a hook that bounces like a tightly coiled spring. Stark, sharp and unyielding, this is a timeless exercise in 808 science that smoulders with a tribal sense of physicality.
Finally we hit “Sugar Square”, and it’s as sweet as it sounds. Sitting happily between Underground Resistance and Jam & Spoon, it taps into the deepest roots of slinky, emotive electronica. Twinkling with every melodic flourish, glistening with every rhythmic twist; it’s the ultimate complement to the darkness that precedes it and showcases the duo’s broadest skills and abilities.

a kaleidoscopic session from one of the uk’s best gems, wordcolour. an artist who excels in storytelling through their productions, this approach to his craft is translated in podcast 215 as the mix gently starts with stunning ambient moments before building into a masterclass of drum programming. pacing through halftime, techno and IDM, it’s an unpredictable 72 minutes with wordcolour showing us his cards — a hand dealt with authenticity as a marker of where he’s at right now as a dj and producer. 

wordcolour made his production debut on lapsus records in 2020 before heading over to fabric’s esteemed imprint houndstooth where he released ‘juno way’ - a breakthrough record as such for wordcolour. this was the beginning of a long-standing relationship with houndstooth where he also went on to release ‘bluster’ ep featuring remixes from djrum, dj python and the soft pink truth, his debut album ‘the trees were buzzing, and the grass.’ and the ratios series. on all of these records, wordcolour’s ability to create detailed, immersive soundscapes which emotionally resonated with both home listening and dancefloor moments, has shined through. continuing on this path of world building, earlier this month wordcolour released the first ep on his new label, TiHKAL, from london-based artist st. amp. a label dedicated to exploring psychedelic soundscapes which is a direction that wordcolour has been producing in recently as well as ties in with the parties he now likes to attend, TiHKAL will be a new home for tracks that land within the 150-200 / 75-100 bpm zone.

to celebrate the release, wordcolour has pulled together a mix that delves into the influences behind this new direction and we chat more about the concept of TiHKAL, approach to curation, early influences and more.

LA’s Carré kicks off the first in a two-part mix series curated by Darwin, marking a decade of the SPE:C label. Known for her subversive sets and a sharp focus on dubstep, leftfield techno, and bass-driven sounds, her contribution to the RC mix series delivers exactly that.

Darwin: "I met Carré a few years ago when she booked me for her party at Fast at Work in LA. I’d already been playing out her dubs quite a bit and had asked her then to sign to SPE:C. It was really inspiring to meet another woman as dedicated to running events and as passionate about dubstep and bass music as I am. Carré’s flair for lush, dreamy atmospheres is unmatched, and I feel honored to have been able to give her a platform to showcase that. She’s also a killer DJ and played one of the sickest after-hours sets at REEF last spring. You can check out her skills on this mix."

February 2016 sees the 3rd anniversary of Houndstooth, and the label mark this with their 50th release. ‘Tessellations’ is a compilation of brand new, exclusive tracks from each of the 14 artists to release on the label.

The release serves to simultaneously trace common threads and highlight tensions within such a stylistically expansive roster.

Presented on a double CD and digitally, ‘Tessellations’ charts a path from Guy Andrews and Aïsha Devi’s widescreen soundscapes and the offbeat electronic pop of 18+ and Snow Ghosts, through the analogue 4/4 pulse of Marquis Hawkes and Shift Work, to Akkord and Special Request’s visceral re-imagining of hardcore.

Tracks from Call Super, Throwing Snow and Second Storey occupy those hard-to-define – yet often most exciting – spaces in between, gluing together the selection along with contributions from House of Black Lanterns, Soft as Snow and _Unsubscribe_.
