Formerly known as Al Tourettes, and half of R&S’s ALSO (alongside Appleblim), Alec Storey unveiled his Second Storey project in 2013. ‘One Sound’ is the second single from his debut LP ‘Double Divide’, and intertwines Second Storey’s electro and bass music influences over six restless, bouncy minutes. Brand new ‘Layer Lock’ is equally frenetic, but echoes IDM in its micro-melodies and unconventional structure.

Two of Storey’s idols take up remix duties. Luke Vibert provides a sampladelic version of ‘One Sound’, adding splashes of colour in the finest cut ’n’ paste style. Meanwhile Cristian Vogel transforms ‘Layer Lock’ into a shape-shifting head-nodder whose rhythmical shifts delight and confound in equal measure. 

The 12" is cut to 180g vinyl by Matt Colton, and limited to 500 copies.

'Double Divide' is the debut LP from Second Storey, released on Houndstooth on October 6th 2014.

Describing the music on Double Divide, Second Storey says: "The title of the album, 'Double Divide' refers to the different ideas I found myself exploring as the album progressed, relating to tension and release. The 'Double' being the double-intensity beat driven tracks and the 'Divide' being the antidote in the form of the ambient or more introspective moments." This duality is on display throughout the album, which hints at his wide-ranging influences, from the complex rhythmic structures and emotive melodic phrases of Aphex Twin and Autechre, the funk of Prince to Parliament, the crazed robotics of Drexciya and the raw techno sludge of Cristian Vogel and Neil Landstrumm, right through to dark drum and bass of artists like Ed Rush & Optical.

The latest EP to emerge on the Houndstooth is from Second Storey and after his 'Double Divide' LP last year, Alec Storey is receiving some mad hype. 

We have the premiere of the Luke Vibert remix and the prolific techno producer has gone to town on 'One Sound'. Expect an erratic, demonic and frankly bonkers edit that incorporates squelchy basslines, sharp vocal cuts and beautifully staggered drums. Check it.
