Alton James, Ph.D., has dedicated his career to the education and liberation of humanity. In particular, Alton has focused his efforts through the medium of storytelling through both words and music. From his early teens to the present, Alton has accompanied and led choirs around the Metro-Detroit area. However, his overall approach to storytelling may seem unconventional given his background. He earned a BA in English (Minors in African American Studies and Music) at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. Then, he followed with an MA in Educational Leadership and Policy at the same school. Upon graduation, Alton taught middle and high school English and Music in Detroit. While honing his music composition abilities, Alton served in higher education while earning his Ed.S. and Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and Policy. In 2013, he founded Alton James Media, which provides music and audio services for visual media. Alton composes music for TV, film, and other media for independent works. Through his ethos of moving people through storytelling, Alton continues to accomplish this through active authorship, research, and composing music for television, musical theatre, and film. Through Alton James Media and Verse Comics USA, Alton serves as the Director of Sound and Music—crafting soundtracks as a sound supervisor, sound designer, mixer, and composer. It is for this reason that he refers to himself as “The Sonic Storyteller.” Lastly, Alton is a selected member of Theatre Now New York's (TNNY) National Writers Group and serves on their Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Committee.
